Which Traverse is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2024 Chevrolet Traverse. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
2.5L 4-cylAWD, FWD21–23 mpg
3.6L 6-cylAWD, FWD20–21 mpg
  • The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Traverse that averages well under the EPA 20 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2024 Chevrolet Traverse, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Brakes29No crashes

Front brakes squeal early, often from about 3,000 miles, and dealers tend to call it normal. Several cars show 18% pad life on the dash by roughly 17,000 to 20,000 miles. In some cases a faulty pad wear sensor causes the low reading, not real wear. The serious pattern is a defective master brake cylinder. The pedal goes hard or sinks to the floor, "Brake System Failure" warnings appear, and the car is hard to stop. These failures happen under 9,000 miles, and repairs wait weeks for parts.

  • Transmission16No crashes

Transmission fluid leaks and sudden transmission failures dominate, often within the first few thousand miles. Some leaks trace to bolts that were not fully tightened, and many occur with no warning light. Other cars lose drive and show "Reduced Acceleration", hold one gear at high revs, downshift without warning, or will not come out of park. A clutch piston failure is named in one case. Several failures hit in traffic or while accelerating from a stop, raising rear-end risk. Owners also report slipping, shudder and harsh jerks.

  • Electrical14No crashes

Key-not-found faults keep the car from starting, sometimes again after dealer reprogramming, and locked wheels make towing harder. Low-battery and charging warnings return after repeated shop visits, and some cars fail to restart around 10,000 to 15,000 miles. Wider electrical faults can cut power steering, block shifting, or set the parking brake while reversing. Repeated misfires with loss of power also appear. Turn signal and brake light failures wait on backordered parts. One report involves a fire and one an injury.

  • Engine13No crashes

Coolant leaks make up most reports. They come from the upper or lower radiator hose, the radiator, or the coolant pipe, often with no warning before a puddle appears. Some cars become undrivable, and replacement hoses sit on backorder with no loaner offered. Leaks show up around 15,000 miles and can come back after repair. Sudden loss of acceleration also strands drivers in traffic. One oil pump failure locked an engine at 3,333 miles, leading to engine and turbo replacement.

Coolant loss and highway stalling appear in the 2 reports here, with no shared pattern. In one, the radiator and coolant system fail around 18,000 miles. After the repair, the car fails a state inspection and the dealer cannot find why. In the other, the engine shuts off at 65 mph on the interstate with a check engine light and restarts only on the third try. A new catalytic converter did not stop the stalling, which began at 3,900 miles.

  • Seats7No crashes

Third-row head restraints stick. Some will not fold down, so the seat cannot stow. Others stay folded when the seat is raised, leaving a passenger without head protection. The problem appears from the first miles, as low as 240, and dealers often provide no fix. Tether straps that will not release the seat can leave the third row unusable. A separate report describes the driver's seat moving and clicking during acceleration or braking with lighter drivers.

  • Automatic emergency braking5No crashes

Automatic braking slams on for hazards that are not there, both moving forward and in reverse. Rain, wet sensors and shadows are common triggers. The stops can skid the car and nearly cause rear-end crashes. Dealers often cannot reproduce the fault, and replacing a rear sensor did not cure it in one case. "Forward Collision Avoidance" and "4WD Unavailable" messages may appear together. One report describes adaptive cruise and Super Cruise not working at delivery.

  • Steering3No crashes

Power steering cuts out while driving. Sometimes the whole car shuts down too, with dark screens and no brake assist. Warning signs include a flickering camera, air conditioning cycling on and off, and a dash full of lights. The events occur at speeds from 15 to 40 mph. A separate report describes a rumble-strip noise and steering wheel shake that gets worse under braking. There are only 3 filings, but the loss-of-control risk is serious.

  • Body and structure2No crashes

The power liftgate opens and then lowers on its own within seconds. In one case it struck a person loading groceries and caused a minor head injury. A replacement hatch motor did not stop the failure, which began around 12,000 miles. The other report repeats the third-row headrest problem. It also describes Summit White paint chipping and peeling within 2 weeks of ownership, under 1,000 miles, with no gravel exposure.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Traverse owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Brakes
Upper radiator hose leak with 20k miles. Coolant reservoir was completely emptied. Hose needed to be replaced on top of a parts not in stock. No warnings to overheating or coolant leak. Also Brakes squeal since day of purchase.

Filed with NHTSA, December 2025

Brakes
Engine light came on . Warning low coolant turn car off engine over heating. Fan still running after turning off. Happen several times. Serveral days. Took in in to dealership because still under warranty. No longer car available despite under warranty. Also breaks alerted low break pad life in around July 2025 and took it in the dealer and said it was a update not completed.

Filed with NHTSA, December 2025

Transmission
With only 1017 miles on vehicle, the transmission leaked all of the fluid out. Incident happened on a side street, thankfully not on the freeway as this would have been even more of a safety concern. Vehicle was sent to local dealership for inspection. NO warning lamps or messages appeared before, during or after the transmission fluid leaked out of the vehicle.

Filed with NHTSA, December 2024

Transmission
With 103 miles on odometer, vehicle check engine light illuminated, warning message appeared on DIC regarding reduced acceleration, then vehicle proceed to downshift causing the vehicle to reduce speed dramatically almost causing the vehicle behind to hit my vehicle. Vehicle now does not shift properly and is at over 4500 rpm, while driving at a speed of 55 mph.

Filed with NHTSA, September 2024

Electrical
This has happened two times. Driving down the road between 35-55mph. "Speed limited drive with care" no CEL. Took to dealer, advised with a CEL or no codes nothing they could do for it. Multiple nights I get home and the fan stays running after engine shutdown. Engine overheat within 10 min of drive time. OIL SMELLS LIKE FUEL. This time engine throttles back and nearly caused accident with not being able to merge.

Filed with NHTSA, January 2026

Electrical
When turning using signal upon straightening back out the lane change signal activates for the opposite direction I actually turned. Seems to happen on sharper turns than wide turns. I believe this is a safety issue and it looks to others that I may be switching lanes or turning again.

Filed with NHTSA, February 2025

Engine
While driving i was stranded due to the oil pump failing and locking up the engine. Vehicle was towed with 3,333 miles on it. Engine, oil pump and turbo were all replaced after 4 months waiting. 2 weeks after car is fixed the engine is making shuttering noises and is in for a 2nd replacement with only 3,450 miles on the vehicle.

Filed with NHTSA, May 2025

Engine
My vehicle began to leak heavily from the front drivers side- under carriage. No warning lamps, On Star notifications came on but the vehicle was loosing a lot of coolant which could result in the engine overheating. I took it to the dealership and they diagnosed that I needed a lower radiator hose- this needed to be replaced. The part that is needed is on back order until end of December.
