Which Traverse is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2018 Chevrolet Traverse. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 2.0L 4-cyl | FWD | 22 mpg |
| 3.6L 6-cyl | AWD, FWD | 20–21 mpg |
- The 2018 Chevrolet Traverse was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Traverse that averages well under the EPA 20 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.
Check the odometer against these mileages
Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2018 Chevrolet Traverse, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Transmission1731 crash
A "Shift to Park" warning is the most common complaint. The shifter sits in park, but the car won't shut off or lock, keeps chiming, and can drain the battery. Dealers usually replace the shifter assembly, often at the owner's cost. Transmission reports are the second pattern: shudder and bucking at low speed, torque converter diagnoses, and repeat fluid flushes. Other owners describe a flashing D, loss of drive, or a car stuck in low gear. One crash report describes sudden acceleration while parking.
Electrical601 crash
The "Shift to Park" fault shows up here too. The car stays in accessory mode, won't lock, and runs the battery down. It comes and goes, and dealers often can't make it happen during a visit. A second pattern is stalling right after the auto stop feature restarts the engine. The car jerks, the dash goes dark, and steering and brakes stiffen. In one crash report the car rolled backward down a hill into a pole. Other reports cite charging system and StabiliTrak warnings and melted wiring connectors.
Engine35No crashes
Exhaust bracket failures lead this category. The bracket on the flex pipe breaks at a poor weld, the pipe or catalytic converter cracks, and owners get a check engine light, rattling, or a P0420 code. Owners point to GM special coverage for the 2019 and 2021 models and say their 2018 was refused. Purge valve failures cause rough starts and idling close to a stall. Several entries are really transmission problems, such as limp mode, sensor and TCM replacements, and metal in the fluid.
Nearly every report here is an exhaust failure. Owners describe a sudden loud exhaust note, rattling or thumping from underneath, a check engine light, and exhaust fumes or a smoky smell in the cabin. Some report headaches and breathing trouble. Mechanics find fractured brackets, holes in pipes, and cracked or detached catalytic converters. Repairs often don't last, and some converters fail again. Failures are reported from about 30,000 to 151,000 miles, and coverage requests are usually denied.
Brakes181 crash
The electric parking brake is the main safety concern. Some owners say it engages by itself while driving, overheats the brakes until they smoke, and won't release. Others say it won't set or release when parked, which raises the risk of rolling. One crash report describes the car rolling forward from park on a sloped driveway and injuring a person. Other reports describe false brake assist events with grinding, shuddering stops, early ABS sensor and wiring faults with backordered parts, and one master cylinder failure.
Steering13No crashes
Power steering assist can drop out suddenly while driving. A "steering assist is reduced" or "power steering" warning appears and the wheel turns very hard. Some reports come from nearly new cars. Several owners describe the engine stalling at a stop, with the steering and brake pedal locking up while the car rolls. Fixes include steering rack replacement and reprogramming, sometimes with long waits for parts. StabiliTrak warnings that come with stalling, and steering lock tied to the shift-to-park fault, also appear.
Seat belts9No crashes
Buckles either won't latch or come unlatched while in use. Reports involve the driver, the front passenger, and especially the second-row middle seat. One second-row belt won't pull out at all. Repeat dealer repairs don't always fix it, and owners say coverage was denied, even where a customer satisfaction program was cited. Another report notes that hill descent control turns off when the driver's belt isn't buckled, and the car then rolled backward on an incline.
Fuel system8No crashes
Failed purge valve solenoids cause most of these complaints. The car sputters or stalls after starting or shifting into drive, and the pump nozzle shuts off early so the tank won't fill. A P0496 code often follows a fill-up. One owner reports repeat catalytic converter failures, with power loss on the interstate, and another blames weak flex pipe welds for letting fumes into the cabin. Other single reports describe hesitation from fuel starvation during U-turns and a fuel smell in the cabin.
Airbags54 crashes
Airbags failing to deploy in serious crashes is the main complaint. Four of the five reports involve crashes, including head-on, side-impact, and rear-end collisions where owners say no airbag went off. Two people were injured. Several owners add that OnStar did not respond after the crash. One report describes the car catching fire after a minor accident. Another owner says the car was sold with airbags that did not work.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Traverse owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
Vehicle had known service bulletin transmission shudder and told torque converter failure for vehicle with only 57000 miles. Vehicle already had TCM and transmission control and flush services at 9,000 and 15,000 miles. GM did 50/50 split of bill since 5 year power warranty was expired. GM should be paying these entire costs to customers for a known quality issue documented in numerous service bulletins for the Traverse.

My 2018 Chevy Traverse started to have a "shift to park" issue at 49,000 miles. I can not turn the car off because the vehicle states that it is not in park. I have to sometimes literally sit in the vehicle for 10-15 minutes waiting for the car to agree that its in park. Very dangerous. Dealer says it is not covered under warranty at I have to pay for it out of pocket.
Filed with NHTSA, January 2022
The gear shifter in my vehicle consistently fails to lock into “Park.” Whenever I place the car in “Park,” a message appears on the dashboard stating, “Shift to Park,” which prevents me from turning off the vehicle. It takes multiple attempts to get the shifter to lock into place and for the message to disappear. This issue is not only frustrating but also poses a potential safety hazard, as the vehicle does not reliably indicate that it is in “Park.”

electrical codes saying power steering failure which could cause loss of control of vehicle catalytic converter failure - leading to oxygen sensor failure and burnt spark plugs. engine sputters. If you look online its non-stop reports of this same year having the same issues of catalytic converter failures. health concern, emissions concern, safety concern. GM needs to recall and replace these

ome customers may complain of a rattle or exhaust noise, a CEL/MIL on, or repeat concerns of lean codes or converter failures. The cause for these concerns could be a broken or poor weld with lack of penetration on the Bank 2 exhaust. Issue is exact same as listed in Bulletin PIP5681A
Filed with NHTSA, November 2025
Exhaust pipe bracket that is welded to both exhaust pipes broke off allowing firewall side catalytic converter pipe to crack near the head of the engine.

Experiencing shift to park issues for the second time. Making it difficult to park and turn off vehicle. Vehicle only has ~68K miles. Chevy should also include the 2018 model year for recalls.
Filed with NHTSA, October 2023
Shift to Park Issue. Other years have been recalled for this issue but not 2018 (specifically this vin#). Car doesn't recognize when parking gear is engaged and asks for parking to be engaged. Issue is happening more often and it's becoming harder to park the car. Dealership says nothing can be done unless out of pocket.

Where the 2018 fits in the Traverse's history
Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.
The 2018 is the first model year of the Traverse's second generation (2018–2024). First years of a redesign often carry teething problems that Chevrolet fixes in later years, so the checks above matter more than usual.
Chevrolet updated the Traverse for 2022, so a 2018 does not have those changes.
What changed for 2022 (not on a 2018)
- Grille similar to redesigned Suburban/Tahoe
- Thin LED headlights and tail lights
- New daytime running lights with integrated LED turn signals
- New interior seating options
- Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
Should you avoid the first year of a redesign? See the 45-car study.
