Which Traverse is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2019 Chevrolet Traverse. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 2.0L 4-cyl | FWD | 22 mpg |
| 3.6L 6-cyl | AWD, FWD | 20–21 mpg |
- The 2019 Chevrolet Traverse was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Traverse that averages well under the EPA 20 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2019 Chevrolet Traverse, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Transmission1452 crashes
A false "Shift to Park" message is the most common report. The car is in park but will not fully shut off, so drivers wiggle the shifter or restart to clear it, often between 24,000 and 28,600 miles. One crash report describes the vehicle rolling into a roadway while showing park. Other reports describe shudder near 20 mph, bucking during shifts at 42,000 miles, and transmissions replaced near 57,833 miles. Both fire reports involve leaking fluid, with one ending in engine-compartment flames.
Electrical621 crash
Most of these reports are the same false "Shift to Park" fault. The engine will not shut off, the doors will not lock, and the chime keeps sounding. Some owners are stuck in the car for long stretches. Others report a drained battery and being stranded. One owner cites a service bulletin pointing to a faulty park switch in the shifter. Several say their VIN was left out of related recalls. Less common reports include stalling in traffic, auto stop failing to restart, a parked car rolling into a tree, and a strong cabin odor.
Engine25No crashes
Exhaust failures lead this category. The front exhaust pipe bracket breaks or its weld fails, and the pipe develops holes that can crack the catalytic converter. Owners hear a loud rattle or exhaust noise, and some see repeat failures. A manufacturer recall covers one pipe on some VINs, and owners pay for the rest. Oil leaks from the front timing cover and valve cover gaskets also recur, with one repair requiring the engine to be dropped. A melted A/C compressor clutch pulley and oil consumption also appear.
Steering121 crash
Sudden loss of power steering is the most serious pattern. Dashboard warnings appear and the wheel becomes hard to turn, sometimes at highway speed. One such case ended with the rack and pinion being replaced. Other reports tie loss of steering to the engine stalling, from alternator or starter failures. Broken sway bars and rear toe links that fail inspection also show up here. One crash report involves a parking collision after a reduced steering assist warning.
Seat belts9No crashes
The second-row middle buckle is the main weak spot. It sits between the folding 60/40 seats or catches on the recline lever. When the seats tilt forward for third-row access, the buckle gets crushed until it no longer latches, which leaves that passenger unrestrained. Other reports describe front belts that stay locked tight or fail to lock. The one injury report involves a child in a booster seat pinned by a tightening belt that had to be cut free.
Suspension9No crashes
Worn or corroded rear toe links are the clear pattern. They often fail state inspection between 22,000 and 61,000 miles. Owners hear a faint clicking from the rear, and the car sways or wanders at highway speed, which throws the alignment off. Replacement links sometimes wear out again within months. Owners note that GM recalled toe links on several other models but not this one, so repairs come out of pocket.
Airbags66 crashes
Every report here describes airbags that did not deploy in a significant crash, including front-end hits, T-bones, a rear-end impact at 50 mph, and a deer strike at highway speed. Drivers report hitting the steering wheel, with injuries that include a broken sternum and chest, neck, and back pain. In several cases the other vehicle's airbags deployed. All six reports involve a crash, and they account for seven injuries.
Brakes61 crash
Brake power drops off without much warning. A "Service Brake Assist" alert appears, the pedal sinks to the floor, and stopping takes much more effort, in one case with less than 400 miles on the car. Other reports describe StabiliTrak warnings with the parking brake engaging on its own when pulling away from a stop. One crash report describes the car surging forward during a slow turn with the brake held down. Dealers often cannot reproduce these faults.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Traverse owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
My Traverse intermittently displays 'shift to park' message and I was not able to shut the SUV all the way off. I would have to play with the shift gear in order for it to turn off. I am under 50k miles.

The vehicle has a bucking motion while accelerating from stop up to speeds in excess of 25 mph . The bucking only occurs while shifting. The cars RPMs drop during this bucking and the vehicle comes close to stalling. The vehicle has 42,000 miles on it. Dealership is saying this is common in all traverse Ciocca dealership Lawrence township NJ but changed transmission and still bucking they said they cant do nothing and keep driving it till 1500-2000 miles

Has “Shift to Park” issue and will keep electronics on, killing the battery. Other vehicles were recalled but this is an excluded one. Was rear ended enough to get a salvage title but I was told a salvage title doesn’t affect safety recalls. Bought with less than 2k miles and have 22k miles on the vehicle now so there hasn’t been excessive use. Has done it several times now.

When putting car in park, it continues to show a shift to park error message and will not power down all the way. I have to restart the car and shift in and out of park several times before the car will shut off. Often times when stopping at lights/stop signs the car will shift super hard and jerk into gear when trying to start moving again. This occasionally happens when it should be shifting going up hills as well.

Driving through Arizona desert and California desert, air conditioning went out. On Monday, contacted Mission Bay Chevrolet to get AC repaired. Dealership and service rep were excellent but this AC should not have failed at 39,151 miles. Diagnosis showed that Compressor clutch pulley melted freezing the compressor. I can only thank God that I had an extended warranty.

Timing cover / valve covers...had to drop the engine...5K for 100,000 miles. Other 2019 Traverse have had issues for recall but not my VIN. If some VIN numbers have been recalled, then all VIN numbers with the same issue should be covered

The Sway bar/Control Arm broke up near the engine without cause. It appears metal fatigue or manufacture defect caused same. It's failure led to CV Joint and other damage. This was discovered during a changing of tires. I don't know how long it had been broken as no obvious signs were readily apparent and my wife said it drove normal. There was no accident or other impact that would have caused same.

Stopped at a red light in left lane of a two way highway. When light turned green car stalled out. Steering locked and brakes locked. Got truck to side of road. Lights and radio still worked. Truck would not turn over or start. Dashboard was fully lit. Had towed to dealer. According to dealer it was starter and flywheel

Where the 2019 fits in the Traverse's history
Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.
The 2019 is the second model year of the Traverse's second generation (2018–2024).
Chevrolet updated the Traverse for 2022, so a 2019 does not have those changes.
What changed for 2022 (not on a 2019)
- Grille similar to redesigned Suburban/Tahoe
- Thin LED headlights and tail lights
- New daytime running lights with integrated LED turn signals
- New interior seating options
- Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
