Which Grand Cherokee is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

  • The 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • On the plug-in hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Grand Cherokee that averages well under the EPA 17 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical881 crash

Sudden shutdowns are the biggest problem in this category. The vehicle loses power at highway speed, sometimes shifting itself into park, with a service electrical system warning. On 4xe plug-in hybrids, the high-voltage battery drains after a few days parked or stops charging. Some cars will not start, will not power off, or cannot be towed because the electric park brake stays locked. Two fires are reported, one starting near the hybrid battery while driving. Many complaints concern battery and engine recalls that have no parts yet, and owners have been told to park outside, away from structures.

  • Transmission23No crashes

The main pattern is loss of propulsion at highway speed. The vehicle suddenly slows or dies, often with Service Transmission or hybrid system warnings. Some cars then drop into park, refuse to shift, or will not shut off. Many failures show up in the first few thousand miles, including a transmission replaced at 866 miles. Dealers often find no codes. Hard, jerky shifting and unexpected surges at low speed also appear. Many complaints cite the engine sand contamination recall, which still has no remedy.

  • Exterior lights16No crashes

High beams do not turn on when the headlight switch is in Auto on vehicles without automatic high beams. Drivers have to switch to manual mode or hold the stalk back. A recall covers this defect, but several owners say the recall update still failed after two or three dealer visits, and some dealers say no fix exists. Other complaints describe a rear turn signal too small for following drivers to notice, taillights that stay off until switched on by hand, and a right headlight fault tied to emergency braking warnings.

  • Engine15No crashes

Most complaints here are about the engine recall for sand contamination, which warns of catastrophic engine failure and fire. Parts are unavailable, so dealers cannot finish the repair, and some 4xe owners are asking for buybacks. Reported failures include stalling when shifting into park, sudden power loss on the highway, cars that will not restart for several minutes, unexpected revving, hesitation, and intermittent Service Hybrid System warnings. A few owners also report a rough idle that nearly stalls with the AC on, valve chatter, and exhaust fumes inside the cabin.

  • Brakes72 crashes

Unexpected forward surges while slowing or stopping are the most serious pattern here. Both crash reports involve the vehicle lurching ahead with the brakes applied. Other complaints describe a brake pedal that jams after little travel, and a pedal that sinks nearly to the floor with ABS and driver-assist warnings during repeated downhill braking. One owner reports an internal ABS failure that needed replacement. Phantom forward collision braking that cuts highway speed sharply also appears, as does the auto park brake engaging at a stop sign.

  • Automatic emergency braking7No crashes

Automatic emergency braking either fails to work or reports itself as unavailable. Warnings saying AEB is unavailable or has limited functionality appear on cars with very few miles, and dealers often find no codes. Some owners say the system did not react to stopped vehicles during tests, including a dealer test drive. The opposite fault also appears: false AEB activation stops the car abruptly and continues after reprogramming. A cooling system failure disabled the collision warning sensor and radar on one car, and a front parking sensor that stops alerting is also reported.

  • Steering51 crash

Power steering cuts out suddenly, usually alongside a wave of warnings that also disable lane assist, auto park, SOS calling, and the passenger airbag indicator. One steering rack needed replacement at 3,216 miles after its boot failed. Dealers have not been able to trace a recurring clunk or creak from the front end. The crash-related report describes a fatal rear-end collision after the vehicle stopped in a highway lane. That report gives no cause.

  • Acceleration and cruise control5No crashes

Unintended acceleration and erratic speed changes run through these reports. Complaints describe sudden downshifts on the freeway and adaptive cruise control accelerating toward a slowing car after the cameras failed. Another report describes a surge at parking speed that the brakes did not stop. On a hybrid, a phantom stop was followed by a stuck accelerator. Other drivers feel drag when slowing and gears hanging below 20 mph. The injury report involves neck pain from a random forward collision stop. Dealers have not fixed the downshift problem.

In owners' own words

Electrical
My jeep is a 2024, with just about 12,000 miles. On Monday, May 5, 2025. My Air Conditioner stopped working. It was only blowing out warm air. Now I’m told there’s some kind of AC leak and it will take 2-5 days for parks and a full day to repair. After reading reviews. This is a known issue with 2022 jeeps. This needs to be an issue with 2024. This is my 3rd jeep and I’ve never had issues like this.

ElectricalCrash reported
THERE IS a safety recall on vehicle that Manufacturer Safety recall issued. there is no remedy. while reading all of the safety issues that come with this. this is not a great way to feel as you drive with fear vehicle may stop operating while you are driving and can cause an accident.

Transmission
In traffic, in drive, at speed 40 MPH, vehicle shifted automatic transmission to low gear, dropped speed to 10 MPH, every alarm indicator came on, RPMs were in the 6K red line range, was able to pull of the road, engine shut down, was not able to shift, restart, or use key fob functions. Towed to dealer replaced aux battery, replaced TCM valve body assembly. Vehicle mileage 4,380.

Filed with NHTSA, June 2025

Transmission
Vehicle acceleration stops at high altitudes which causes the vehicle to suddenly maintain lower gear and speeds while driving on interstate/highway. Vehicle had accelerator replaced by delearship at 1,406 miles, however the issue continued. Dealership is now replacing turbocharger engine after reporting failure at 3,500 miles.

Exterior lights
I have had this 2024 Grand Cherokee for barely 4 months and this is the second time I have gotten the notification “Automatic Emergency braking needs servicing” and “Right Lighting needs servicing” the AEB nor forward collision warning works and last time I brought it in they said the right head light was continuously running which is why it needed servicing and here I am 2 weeks later with the exact same issue.

this car has been worked on twice with negative results, now the dealer has told me Jeep does not want to try to repair it until further investigation.it does not comeply with FMVSS No.108 recall repair 12B Wich was performed twice with negative results.I think they are avoiding the lemon law by not trying to repair it a third time.No loaner or compensation offered.

Engine
Avis rented me this car with an active safety recall. The key fob even had a small sticker on it that had "Safety Recall" handwritten on it, indicating they were aware there was an active safety recall (these things are literally lighting on fire) -- and put me and my family's lives at risk. This is a flagrant violation of the Raechel and Jacqueline Houck Safe Rental Car Act. They refused to fully refund me for this glaring breach in safety.

Filed with NHTSA, January 2026

Engine
While driving on the highway at 65mph, the car suddenly lost power in middle of traffic and stopped. I was barely able to park on side of the road and was facing a severe risk of being crashed into! I was able to restart the vehicle after 7min by holding stop start button for long time
