Worth adding to your 2020 checks

  • Accelerate from stops and at highway speed; reject any slipping, hesitation, hard shifts, or shudder between gears.
  • Ask whether the transmission was replaced, and check the fluid for black color or a burnt smell.
  • Listen at idle and under load for ticking or knocking, a sign of lifter or bearing failure.

2018 Suburban

75 owner complaints
  • Transmission 13
  • Electrical 12
  • Steering 8

Worth adding to your 2020 checks

  • Ask for transmission service records, and on the test drive feel for harsh or clunking shifts, slipping, or shudder under acceleration.
  • With the engine off and your foot off the brake, try moving the shifter out of Park. It should not move.
  • Listen at cold start and idle for ticking or rattling from the engine, a sign of lifter trouble.

Which Suburban is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2020 Chevrolet Suburban. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
5.3L 8-cylGas4WD, RWD16–18 mpg
6.2L 8-cylGas4WD, RWD16–17 mpg
5.3L 8-cylFlex fuel4WD, RWD16–18 mpg
  • The 2020 Chevrolet Suburban was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Suburban that averages well under the EPA 16 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2020 Chevrolet Suburban, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Transmission9No crashes

Transmission failure is the main pattern, usually close to 100,000 miles. The transmission slips, RPMs stop matching road speed, and a whine or shudder builds. Then the SUV won't accelerate past 40 to 50 mph or stops moving on the highway. Warning lights often stay off, so dealers can miss the fault. Repairs run about $7000, and a torque converter replacement did not cure one shudder. Other reports cover cold-start lifter ticking and grinding differentials with metal shavings. One front differential was on back order.

  • Engine7No crashes

Lifters collapse and camshafts fail on the 6.2-liter V8, with failures reported near 95,000 miles. Warning signs include cold-start knocking or ticking, misfires, stuttering under acceleration, and violent shaking on only five cylinders. The usual fix is a full engine replacement, and quotes run as high as $10-20,000. One owner waited four months for a replacement engine. In another case, a vehicle caught fire on the highway during a dealer test drive after getting a new engine, and it was a total loss. Separate reports cite a leaking fuel injector diluting the oil and a burst water pump.

  • Electrical4No crashes

Intermittent electrical faults switch systems off and on by themselves. Power steering cuts out, the wipers start on their own, and the instrument cluster goes black. One dealer fixed this under a technical service bulletin. A mechanic blamed one engine replacement at 120,000 miles on a degraded fuel injector wiring harness and a faulty sensor that shifts the engine between V8 and V6 modes. One complaint is odometer fraud: a private-sale vehicle sold with 88,000 miles had 252,000 on record.

  • Steering4No crashes

Power steering assist cuts out without warning. The wheel goes firm while driving, sometimes followed by a Service Power Steering message. Some startups knock out steering assist, stability control, the speedometer and tachometer, and reverse gear, leaving only first gear. These faults can clear after repeated restarts and then return. Stalling while driving takes power steering and power brakes with it. One owner also describes the front wheels seeming to turn on their own in corners, which is a loss-of-control risk on wet roads.

  • Airbags21 crash

In one crash, no airbags deployed when another vehicle traveling about 45 mph hit the driver-side front quarter during a left turn. Separately, a Service Safety Restraint System warning comes and goes as if from an electrical short. The owner notes that the related service bulletin covers only 2021-2023 models, so the 2020 is left out. Only two complaints are on file, but both question whether the restraint system will work when needed.

  • Brakes21 crash

With no warning light or message, the brake pedal sinks to the floor and the vehicle will not stop. Pumping the pedal does not help. The dealer fix was a new master cylinder, brake booster, and vacuum pump. A crash-related report describes brakes that stiffen and need heavy effort to press. It came alongside a grinding starter, no-start episodes, and stalling right after startup, and repeated dealer visits did not fix it.

  • Acceleration and cruise control2No crashes

Adaptive cruise control reacts late when the vehicle ahead slows, so the driver has to brake hard to avoid a collision. Above 65 mph it leaves too little following distance, and the problem shows up from the first long trip. The other complaint filed here is really an engine failure: clicking and knocking on the interstate, then a complete loss of throttle within minutes. The dealer called it catastrophic engine failure. Steering and brakes kept working long enough to reach the shoulder.

  • Suspension2No crashes

Most of what is filed here describes engine and wiring trouble rather than suspension wear. One vehicle needed two engine replacements by 70,000 miles, with failures at high speed. It also has a recurring wiring harness fault that cuts power steering while driving, which the dealer has not fixed. The one true driveline complaint describes a jolt from the right front while accelerating above 50 mph with automatic four-wheel drive engaged. It has persisted since purchase.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Suburban owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Transmission
I had to replace my rear differential due to grinding and metal shavings in the rear end. Recently had to take my truck in for repairs due to the motor mounts breaking. Discovered the front differential is also damaged with metal shavings due to grinding. The auto shop reached out to the local Chevy dealership to order the part to place. Was told the front diff is on back order due to this being a common problem.

Transmission
Engine making ticking on passenger side when first started in the morning. Service bulletin is out but dealers are not doing a recall. Engine can fail while driving from this if it gets worse. GM admitted problem in Service Bulletin No 19-na-218 lifter and push rod failure is the problem.

Filed with NHTSA, June 2024

Engine
Fuel injector failed and pumped too much gas into cylinder causing gas to get into engine oil and ruin engine. GM claims they are building the replacement engine, but won't give any estimate of when it will be fixed. Other dealers that are receiving these engines will not sell the engine to my dealer. I believe there is a bigger problem that GM will not admit to and they should be held accountable. Four months is too long for this situation to exist!

Engine
Out of the blue, while driving, my car started lurching and making a weird rattling noise. I was able to make it to a mechanic, where I learned the cylinder lifters collapsed and crankshaft were broken. The mechanic told me this is a common defect for GM motors. My vehicle is only five years old, so to learn we have a $10-20,000 repair on our hands was paralyzing and devastating.

Filed with NHTSA, April 2025

Electrical
engine replacement at 120,000 miles. I was told by Mechanic that the 2020 Suburban's have a problem with the fuel injector wiring harness dry rotting and the sensor changing the engine from V8 to V6 when on highway going bad causing misfire in engine and ruining the engine.

Filed with NHTSA, March 2025

Electrical
Odometer Fraud. The contact purchased a 2020 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact stated that while attempting to register the vehicle, it was discovered that there was a mileage discrepancy. The vehicle was a private sale. At the time of purchase, the vehicle mileage was 88,000 and at the time of registration, it was discovered that the mileage was 252,000.

Filed with NHTSA, August 2025

Steering
While turning at driving speed I feel as if I loose control of the steering for a split second. The front wheels feel like they begin to turn without me turning the steering wheel. This has happened at least a dozen times in the 6000 miles I have put on the car. It is extremely dangerous especially on wet roads. I have not reported this to GM. I was searching the internet for a recall and found your website.

Filed with NHTSA, July 2021

Steering
My car shut off two times while driving. When you google the issue, it auto populates meaning that this is a very common issue with GM. It starts back to 2015 searches as well. GM needs to recall their suburbans for their cars turning off while driving which caused me to lose power steering, power brakes and anything that requires electrical.

Recalls to confirm (3)

Recall repairs are free at any Chevrolet dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 21V115000Wheels and tiresFeb 2021

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2020 Buick Enclave, Cadillac XT4, XT5, Escalade, Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, Traverse, GMC Yukon, Yukon XL, 2018-2021 Chevrolet Express, GMC Savana, 2019-2020 Chevrolet Blazer, Silverado 1500, GMC Acadia, Sierra 1500, and certain Continental tires sold to the aftermarket for various model year 2018-2021 vehicles. The affected tires were cured for too long during production.

Risk: Over cured tires may develop a break in the sidewall resulting in sudden air loss or a belt edge separation which could lead to a tread/belt loss. Either condition can cause a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the tires, replacing them as necessary, free of charge. The recall began March 22, 2021. Owners may contact GMC customer service at 1-888-988-7267, Buick customer service at 1-866-608-8080, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006. GM's number for this recall is N212329050.

  2. 19V837000Fuel systemNov 2019

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2020 Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Camaro, Silverado 1500, Suburban, Tahoe, GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, and Yukon XL vehicles. The fuel pump may be missing a pressure regulator, allowing for over-pressurization of the fuel system.

Risk: Over-pressurization can crack the fuel pump and cause leaks, increasing the risk of a fire in the presence of an ignition source.

Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel pump, free of charge. The recall began December 18, 2019. Owners may contact Cadillac customer service at 1-800-333-4223, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or GMC customer service at 1-888-988-7267. GM's number for this recall is N192283991.

  3. 19V761000BrakesOct 2019

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2020 Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, and GMC Yukon, and 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles equipped with a 5.3-liter engine, a 3.08-ratio rear axle and four-wheel drive. If a wheel-speed sensor fails, while the vehicle is traveling between 41 and 60 mph in four-wheel or automatic mode, the Electronic-Brake Control Module (EBCM) software may activate the driveline-protection system.

Risk: Unintended activation of the driveline-protection system will cause unintended braking on the wheel on the opposite side of the failed sensor, causing the vehicle to pull to one side unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the EBCM, free of charge. The recall began December 11, 2019. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-630-2438 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N192261050.
