Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2024 Chevrolet Suburban, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Engine14No crashes

Sudden shutdowns at highway speed leave drivers coasting to the shoulder with no throttle response, and some vehicles will not restart or shift into neutral. Dealers diagnose internal failure, including bearing failure in the 6.2L, and replace the engine or long block. One failure came at 9600 miles. Several reports tie the problem to the L87 recall, and one engine failed after passing the recall inspection. Vehicles that pass get a higher-viscosity oil, which owners say raises oil change costs. One report describes an engine fire shortly after parking, cause unknown.

Most of these reports are about waiting for a recall repair, not about failures. Owners notified of campaign 25V274000 say parts are not available, dealers confirm the shortage, and one dealer refused to open a work order. A few describe hesitation under acceleration, with the vehicle failing to accelerate and then slamming into gear. One report says the hesitation continued after the recall repair was done. The mileages given are approximately 4,000 and 27,300.

  • Transmission4No crashes

Failures range across the drivetrain. A transmission failure at about 39,000 miles left one vehicle undrivable, with a faulty valve body on national back order for 2 to 6 months or longer. Front CV axles are replaced multiple times before 70,000 miles. Rear axle failure shows up as a growing noise from the rear, a feeling the rear wheels will lock under braking, and jerking in reverse. Another report describes a total power loss at 80 mph, after which the vehicle would not restart.

  • Brakes3No crashes

Brake failure warnings arrive together with engine trouble. Drivers describe loud knocking or rattling, sputtering, power loss, and dash messages reading "brake failure" and "emergency brake failure" while the brakes stop responding. One report describes limp mode with no brakes and no steering. Problems repeat, with one driver reporting two separate events and a lingering rough idle and engine light. Dealers do not always find a cause, and one found nothing wrong after the vehicle was towed in.

  • Electrical3No crashes

A check engine light comes on with a "reduced acceleration" message, and engine speed drops sharply, making it hard to accelerate at highway speed. Dealers kept one vehicle twice without finding the cause. With cruise control set, the vehicle brakes hard with no cars nearby, at 40 mph and above, and the dealer offered no fix. Other complaints include an emissions-related check engine light at 14k miles, brakes that still squeal after 3 replacements, and a radio that keeps turning on and off.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Suburban owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Engine
I parked at my home, approximately 5 minutes after arriving home my grandson ran in yelling papa your car is on fire. The engine was on fire, shooting flames onto the windsheild. The cause of fire is unknown at this time.

Filed with NHTSA, April 2025

Transmission
The vehicle only has ~39,000 miles on it and the transmission went out and the car is not drivable. The dealership said it is a faulty valve body and that the part is on national back order and could take 2 to 6 months or even longer to get the part before they can start work.

Filed with NHTSA, August 2025

Risk: Engine failure increases the risk of a crash.

Fix: Dealers will inspect the engine, and as necessary, repair or replace the engine. For vehicles that pass inspection, dealers will add higher viscosity oil, install 6 oil fill cap, replace the oil filter, and update the owner's manual. Repairs will be performed free of charge.
