Run the VIN before you go

A history report shows accidents, title brands, odometer readings, and open recalls for this 2020 Lincoln Navigator. Ask the seller for the VIN; it is also on the dash at the base of the windshield.

Your inspection sheet

Tick items off on your phone at the car, or print it. Ticks stay on this device.

These checks are specific to this model year. For tires, body panels, fluids, and the other basics every used car needs, use the general inspection guide.

Reported on other Navigator years with the same design

These years share the 2020's design and most of its parts, so their problems are the ones to look for on this car too.

Worth adding to your 2020 checks

  • Accelerate firmly from 50 mph on a highway and watch for slipping into neutral, lost power, or a harsh lurch back into gear.
  • Watch the dash for Shift System Fault or Powertrain Malfunction messages and ask for any transmission repair records.
  • Run the VIN through federal recall records and confirm every open recall has been completed by a Lincoln dealer.

Which Navigator is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2020 Lincoln Navigator. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Navigator that averages well under the EPA 18 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2020 Lincoln Navigator, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Transmission13No crashes

The transmission drops into neutral or fails to find a lower gear when the driver accelerates to merge or pass at highway speed. The engine revs, sometimes to redline, and power is lost until the gearbox slams back in with a bang. Some of these near misses happen on on-ramps and in traffic. Other reports describe hard shifts, overheating, and fluid spraying onto the rear hatch or leaking with smoke. Problems often return after a rebuild or replacement. One vehicle caught fire after losing all power less than 2000 miles after a warranty transmission replacement.

  • Electrical4No crashes

The battery drains overnight and leaves the car unable to start, and dealers have not found the cause. Before it dies, the app sends deep sleep and battery-saving alerts, and remote start and unlock stop working. After jump starts, warning lights come on and the power running boards stick or quit. Other reports describe a passenger seat that moves forward and back on its own at about 500 miles. Collision warning is also inconsistent, staying silent during hard braking or going off at long range, and lane departure correction works only some of the time.

  • Engine3No crashes

Catastrophic failure arrives with little warning, and the check engine light comes on only after power loss and shuddering begin. Reported failures happen at 78,000 and 93,000 miles. Diagnoses include bottom-end damage with knocking, metal debris in the oil, failed seals, and piston ring failure causing compression loss. Both cases call for a complete engine replacement. A separate report describes the vehicle abruptly losing power and nearly stalling when the driver accelerates to pass between 40 and 60 mph, creating a dangerous situation in traffic.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Navigator owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Transmission
Transmission issue: Not shifting properly while on the highway and almost causing a crash by loosing power and shifted into neutral after attemting to accelerate. The next time it occured the transsmission would not down shift and I was not able to accelerate.

Filed with NHTSA, March 2026

Transmission
Faulty Transmissions even after replacement. Fluid leaks and abrupt starting / stopping with it. Dealers can't seem to figure it out and have become a safety issue

Filed with NHTSA, February 2026

Electrical
My car has an unknown electrical issue that causes the car battery to completely drain and the car unable to turn on. It first started in August 2023 and after months of time at the dealership, Lincoln has never determined the cause or been able to fix it and it continues to happen. This is unsafe because it leaves me and my family stranded with no operable car.

Filed with NHTSA, July 2024

Electrical
The collision warning doesn't warn sometimes. Nothing goes off when Im approaching and or have slammed on my breaks to avoid a collision. Sometimes it goes off at a great distance when it doesn't make sense to go off. I just bought the car used and have noticed this a lot. Also sometimes lane departure corrects and sometimes it doesn't. Something is off.

Filed with NHTSA, September 2025

Engine
Vehicle will abruptly lose power when accelerating to pass. Typically when travelling between 40 and 60 miles an hour and while accelerating to merge or pass. Vehicle basically stalls. Creates extremely dangerous situation.

Filed with NHTSA, August 2023

Where the 2020 fits in the Navigator's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2020 is the third model year of the Navigator's fourth generation (2018–2024).

Lincoln updated the Navigator for 2022, so a 2020 does not have those changes.

What changed for 2022 (not on a 2020)

  • Introduced new 13-inch center touchscreen
  • Enhanced features like BlueCruise and interior updates

Recall repairs are free at any Lincoln dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 25V628000EnginePark outsideSep 2025
