Which Suburban is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2018 Chevrolet Suburban. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 5.3L 8-cylGas | 4WD, RWD | 18–19 mpg |
| 5.3L 8-cylFlex fuel | 4WD, RWD | 18–19 mpg |
- The 2018 Chevrolet Suburban was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Suburban that averages well under the EPA 18 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.
Check the odometer against these mileages
Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.
Sudden transmission failure
60,000–111,000 miles
Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2018 Chevrolet Suburban, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Transmission131 crash
Transmissions fail suddenly, often with no warning light. Reports describe hard or clunking shifts, slipping, shaking under acceleration, and abrupt loss of power in traffic or at highway speed, sometimes leaving the SUV stranded. Several shops blame the torque converter. Failures cluster between roughly 60,000 and 111,000 miles, with a few under 40,000, and one owner needed a second transmission. In one crash report, the shifter could be pulled out of Park with the engine off, and the vehicle rolled into a parked car. A few reports describe lifter or camshaft ticking.
Electrical12No crashes
The engine shuts off while driving. Sometimes it restarts on its own or after a key cycle, and sometimes the SUV needs a tow. Dealers trace several cases to overheated or faulty battery cables. Others go undiagnosed even after new batteries and ignition switches. Other reports describe no-start conditions, an instrument cluster that goes dark, and a Service Trailer Brake System warning tied to wiring. That wiring fault also lights StabiliTrak and ABS warnings, even on trucks that never tow. Intermittent stability-control lights can disable cruise control and steering assist.
Steering8No crashes
Power steering assist cuts out without warning, often during low-speed turns, leaving the wheel very hard to turn. Some cases come with a full electrical shutdown or a string of warnings for the trailer brake system, ABS, and traction control. That points to the same wiring and voltage faults seen in electrical complaints. Owners describe near-collisions at intersections. One report describes an upper control arm breaking during a slow turn and the wheel tearing away, with some replacement parts no longer available.
Engine8No crashes
Valve lifters fail, causing ticking or rattling, rough idle, misfires, and in some cases a sudden loss of power on the road. Dealers call it a known issue that can also damage the camshaft. No recall covers it, and repair quotes run to several thousand dollars. One lifter failure came after 60000 miles. Some owners link the problem to Active Fuel Management. Other reports describe stalls dealers cannot duplicate, a failed fuel injector, and a water pump that blew and dumped coolant.
Seat belts5No crashes
Second-row seat belt retractors stop retracting or locking, often on the captain's chairs. That leaves the seat unusable and makes it hard to secure a child seat. Several owners report both second-row belts failing. Warning signs include slow retraction and loud clicking before the belt quits. One dealer blamed child car seat use. Owners outside warranty pay for the repair, with estimates around $500 or more. One report describes a rear center belt that will not extend.
Brakes5No crashes
The brake pedal turns hard and is nearly impossible to press, which sharply cuts stopping power. It happens at highway speed and in reverse. A brake assist message, the ABS light, or a Hill Descent Assist disabled message may appear. In some cases dealers replaced the vacuum pump, then the brake booster when the problem returned. One booster failure came at about 39,000 miles. Owners describe pulling onto the shoulder or standing on the pedal to stop.
Airbags42 crashes
Front-end crashes end with no deployment in two reports, which together list 4 people injured. One of those crashes happened at about 4,700 miles. Another owner reports a driver warning light traced to the overhead airbag, with the repair waiting on parts. In a separate case, a buyer who purchased from a private third party found that no air bags were installed, and the DMV refused to register the vehicle.
Fuel system2No crashes
Problems center on the capless fuel filler. On one nearly new vehicle, the filler neck was replaced because a missing O-ring kept the fuel tank from pressurizing and triggered a fault code. In another case, the filler's automatic flap broke shortly after purchase. Neither report mentions a fire, a leak, or a loss of power. Both read as nuisance failures rather than safety risks.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Suburban owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
My Suburban is having the same issues as the most recent recall on the 2021-2025 Chevrolets. The issue is with pretty much all of the motors that go from the V8 to the 4 cylinders. It's doing the same exact thing a friend of mine's 2019 Tahoe did. It's making a loud knocking/ticking noise. When you first get to going it starts almost sputtering which can cause issues if you're in oncoming traffic trying to cross roads.

On two occasions, most recently on 6/13/23 the vehicle went from 70 mph to 10 mph very suddenly on an Interstate in heavy traffic--very dangerous. The display indicates an over-heated transmission but the dealer believes its some electrical problem. This 2018 Suburban has an 8 speed auto transmission which has a lot of on line complaints and lawsuit pending.

My vehicle completely shuts off while driving. All of the components on the dash and even my steering wheel moves into the prestarted vehicle position. It has happened 3 times in the past week now. One particular instance, I was on the highway and thankfully it came back on immediately before completely stopping but shutting off while driving 65mph is so dangerous.
Filed with NHTSA, August 2025
While driving the vehicle lost all power and after about 20 seconds power came back on. The repair was the battery cables which was apparently very common on the make and model of vehicle. It's unsafe and can cause an accident and apparently happens on the majority of vehicles same year and make.
Filed with NHTSA, May 2023
When driving with the 4x4 switch in the auto setting the car would jerk while driving at high speeds. Almost seemed like the left front tire would engage on dry pavement. Also there is a loss of steering while the vehicle is in motion. Speed does not change when it happens. Seems to happen more when driving around a corner. Loss of steering happened for a split second or multiple seconds.
Filed with NHTSA, February 2022
The vehicle began to shake as if it would shut down. Then, the engine light came on. Then I received three text message alerts. We were shown paperwork regarding the service history that was done at Philips Chevrolet. Now we’re getting alerts regarding work that has to be completed within 7 days.

19V761000BrakesOct 2019
General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2020 Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, and GMC Yukon, and 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles equipped with a 5.3-liter engine, a 3.08-ratio rear axle and four-wheel drive. If a wheel-speed sensor fails, while the vehicle is traveling between 41 and 60 mph in four-wheel or automatic mode, the Electronic-Brake Control Module (EBCM) software may activate the driveline-protection system.
Risk: Unintended activation of the driveline-protection system will cause unintended braking on the wheel on the opposite side of the failed sensor, causing the vehicle to pull to one side unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the EBCM, free of charge. The recall began December 11, 2019. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-630-2438 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N192261050.
19V645000BrakesSep 2019
General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2017 Cadillac Escalade, 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, 2015-2018 Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, GMC Yukon vehicles. The amount of vacuum created by the vacuum pump may decrease over time.
Risk: As the vacuum level drops, the brake assist decreases, increasing braking effort, extending the distance required to stop the vehicle, thereby increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the Electronic Brake Control Module, free of charge. The recall began October 8, 2019. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-630-2438, Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N192268490.
18V673000Seat beltsSep 2018
General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2018-2019 Cadillac CT6, Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Suburban, Volt, and GMC Yukon XL vehicles. Certain second-row or third-row rear seatbelts retractor assemblies may not automatically lock when the seatbelt is fully pulled out of the retractor, possibly preventing a child seat from being properly secured. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection.".
Risk: If the child seat is not properly secured in the event of a crash, it can increase the risk of injury.
Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the rear seatbelt retractors and replace them if necessary, free of charge. The recall began November 7, 2018. Owners may contact Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is 18315.
