Which Suburban is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2023 Chevrolet Suburban. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 5.3L 8-cylGas | 4WD, RWD | 16–17 mpg |
| 6.2L 8-cylGas | 4WD, RWD | 16 mpg |
| 3.0L 6-cylDiesel | 4WD, RWD | 22–23 mpg |
- The 2023 Chevrolet Suburban was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Suburban that averages well under the EPA 16 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2023 Chevrolet Suburban, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Engine44No crashes
Sudden engine failure at highway speed dominates these reports. The engine loses power and makes a loud knocking or tapping noise. Then it shuts off and will not restart, often with no warning light beforehand. Dealers find seized engines, including the 6.2L V8, at roughly 30,000 to 62,000 miles. Replacement engines are on nationwide backorder, so some vehicles sit at the dealer for 30 days or more. Other reports cover collapsed lifters with misfires on the 5.3L V8, failed coolant control valves, a ruptured radiator, and stalls the dealer cannot diagnose. Losing power in traffic is the main crash risk.
Parts shortages for recall 25V274000 drive most of these reports, not actual failures. Owners got the recall notice, but dealers have no parts for the repair, and at least one declined to inspect the engine. Most of these complainants have not had a failure and object to the long wait. One report describes an abnormal engine sound the dealer could not duplicate. Another describes a check engine light traced to a failed coolant control valve. That valve was not replaced, and the special coverage program it fell under was not applied.
Transmission9No crashes
Two problems show up here. The first is a total loss of propulsion at highway speed. The engine dies, the transmission drops into neutral, and power steering goes with it. In one case this happened even after the L87 engine recall repair added higher-viscosity oil. The second is transmission valve body failure. It brings hard shifts, a check engine light, reduced-power or limp mode, and in one report wheel lockup. Valve body parts are scarce, so vehicles wait at dealers for a month or longer. Some owners have paid for the repair themselves.
Electrical9No crashes
Random shutdowns at highway speed lead this category, sometimes with all interior and exterior lights going out at once, and dealers cannot reproduce them. Headlights flash between high and low beam, or switch off along with the wipers while driving at night. Other reports cover a battery that keeps going dead, "No Key Detected" messages that prevent starting, a blank instrument panel, and a string of system warnings blamed on lost computer communication. The OnStar telematics module fails and has been on backorder, and GM has denied at least one warranty claim for it.
Body and structure3No crashes
Slippery factory running boards cause falls when wet, and this category includes 2 injuries. A dealer called the running boards a common problem. In a separate report, the front fuel tank strap lost its bolt at about 30 mph and the tank dragged on the road, which raises a real fire risk. Paint bubbling on a vehicle bought new is also reported. Each issue rests on a single report, so no broad pattern is visible beyond the running boards.
Brakes3No crashes
Loss of braking and sudden brake warnings appear in these reports. One describes a "Brake failure" alert followed by a total loss of brakes on a hill. Another says the vehicle failed to stop, and even accelerated, at about 3,000 miles, and the problem came back after a dealer repair. A third describes the vehicle stuck in park with ABS, check engine, and park brake warnings lit. With only 3 complaints there is no clear pattern, but each failure carries a direct crash risk.
Seat belts2No crashes
A second-row center belt locks in automatic locking mode and keeps tightening. It restricts the passenger's breathing and will not release even after the vehicle is turned off. This category includes 1 injury. Separately, a vehicle was delivered new without one of its required third-row seatbelts, and the manufacturer declined to fix it after the warranty expired. Both problems are easy to miss if the rear rows are rarely used.
Steering2No crashes
Power steering failure is the more serious report here. A steering warning appeared on a nearly new vehicle, and the dealer blamed the rack and pinion but could not fix it after a month in the shop. Another report describes an ESC error message about brake pads along with a wheel that locks. Both raise loss-of-control concerns, though there are only 2 complaints in this category.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Suburban owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
Middle of engine started making a tapping sound. Went to closest dealership service department. They said it was most likely an issue with the valve train but we should be able to get home. Within 10 miles, the engine completely seized up while on the highway loosing all power. Was able to get to the side of the highway. Towed the vehicle to the dealership that we bought from. They said it was going to need a new engine just as soon as they could find one.

This vehicle shifts hard and was identified to have a transmission valve issue. It should be under the same recall that other Chevrolet vehicles have with same issue. On top of this, Chevrolet cannot keep up with demand for this part making only 500 per week. I’ve been told it may be 2 months before I have my vehicle back.
Filed with NHTSA, July 2025
Check engine light came on Then : message saying power reduced. Then: Service transmission, unable to shift soon. While driving on the highway. Vehicle has been at dealership for a month with no idea on when parts will be available. They say they have no idea on when a valve body part will be available.

My vehicle suddenly stalled while driving. I later replaced the battery and discovered the telecom module was damaged, making the OnStar system inoperable. GM disagreed with my warranty claim and required me to replace the module at my own expense. I discovered the same issue is common in various GM models from 2023-2025. My Suburban and Yukon both have the same issue, making them defective. However, GM will not provide a free replacement under warranty.
Filed with NHTSA, August 2025
On Star module failure. The module controls many different safety features and it has failed and has been on a backorder for months creating a safety issue every day.
Filed with NHTSA, November 2023
Question 1) I’m experiencing bubbling under the factory paint and it’s available for inspection Question 2) Unknown Question 3) Yes Question 4) Yes it has been inspected by Chevrolet dealership Question 5) I noticed the defects when I bought the vehicle brand new in 3/1/2023

Risk: Engine failure increases the risk of a crash.
Fix: Dealers will inspect the engine, and as necessary, repair or replace the engine. For vehicles that pass inspection, dealers will add higher viscosity oil, install 6 oil fill cap, replace the oil filter, and update the owner's manual. Repairs will be performed free of charge.
