Worth adding to your 2020 checks

  • Listen at cold start and warm idle for ticking or knocking, and walk away if the check engine light is on.
  • Ask for service records showing any lifter, camshaft, or engine replacement and how much of the cost warranty covered.
  • Drive at highway speed and watch for hesitation, misfire, or a blinking engine or transmission light.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2020 Cadillac Escalade, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Engine17No crashes

Sudden engine failure is the main pattern. Engines seize, stall, or lose power while driving, sometimes at 60 to 70 mph, and often won't restart, which leaves drivers coasting to the shoulder. Ticking, tapping, or knocking, rough idle, shuddering, and misfires often come first. Shops report damaged lifters and camshafts, metal in the oil, worn rod bearings, and a broken rod. Some failures give no warning light. The fix is usually a full engine replacement, and some owners say parts are hard to find. Reported failures cluster around 105,000 to 125,236 miles.

Abnormal engine noise is the warning sign in both reports. In one, knocking from the engine bay at 50 mph comes just before the SUV loses power. It then won't restart and has to be towed. A mechanic traces that failure to the lifters, which damaged the engine badly enough to need a replacement. The other report describes abnormal sounds at about 55,571 miles with no warning light and no diagnosis yet.

  • Transmission3No crashes

Lifter and camshaft failure appears here too. Owners describe loud knocking, a flashing check engine light, misfires on several cylinders, and limp mode with a sudden loss of power at highway speed, in one case at 97000 miles. In some cases the problem keeps coming back even after repeated repairs at independent shops. One separate report covers the transmission. The SUV starts but won't go into drive or reverse, and when it does move it won't shift into higher gears.

  • Airbags22 crashes

In both reports, the steering wheel airbag does not deploy in a collision. Both reports involve a crash and an injury, with loss of smell and taste listed among the injuries. One describes a right rear tire blowing out on a freeway before the crash. The owner says they contacted dealers and the manufacturer about the problem and got no resolution. With only two reports, no wider pattern by mileage or speed is visible.

Recall repairs are free at any Cadillac dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 21V115000Wheels and tiresFeb 2021

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2020 Buick Enclave, Cadillac XT4, XT5, Escalade, Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, Traverse, GMC Yukon, Yukon XL, 2018-2021 Chevrolet Express, GMC Savana, 2019-2020 Chevrolet Blazer, Silverado 1500, GMC Acadia, Sierra 1500, and certain Continental tires sold to the aftermarket for various model year 2018-2021 vehicles. The affected tires were cured for too long during production.

Risk: Over cured tires may develop a break in the sidewall resulting in sudden air loss or a belt edge separation which could lead to a tread/belt loss. Either condition can cause a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the tires, replacing them as necessary, free of charge. The recall began March 22, 2021. Owners may contact GMC customer service at 1-888-988-7267, Buick customer service at 1-866-608-8080, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006. Risk: Over-pressurization can crack the fuel pump and cause leaks, increasing the risk of a fire in the presence of an ignition source.

Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel pump, free of charge. The recall began December 18, 2019. Owners may contact Cadillac customer service at 1-800-333-4223, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or GMC customer service at 1-888-988-7267. GM's number for this recall is N192283991.
