Which Suburban is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2022 Chevrolet Suburban. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
5.3L 8-cylGas4WD, RWD16–17 mpg
6.2L 8-cylGas4WD, RWD16 mpg
3.0L 6-cylDiesel4WD, RWD22–23 mpg
  • The 2022 Chevrolet Suburban was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Suburban that averages well under the EPA 16 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2022 Chevrolet Suburban, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Engine27No crashes

Sudden shutdowns while driving, often at highway speed, top the reports. Owners describe loud knocking, metal shavings in the oil, and seized or spun connecting rod bearings. Dealers usually call for a full engine replacement, and some owners are on a second or third engine. Failures cluster between about 53,000 and 97,000 miles, sometimes just past warranty. Many complaints concern the 6.2L V8 recall. Its remedy is thicker oil rather than a new engine, and owners report long dealer waits. A coolant control valve also fails repeatedly, causing limp mode, a constantly running fan, and a check engine light.

These complaints center on the engine recall, campaign 25V274000. Owners report knocking noises, oil burning off between changes, low oil warnings, and damaged pistons and rings that came back after repair. Some say the parts for the recall repair are unavailable and the wait has gone on far too long. In another case the engine banged, lost power, and stalled at about 55 MPH with no warning light. The dealer could not diagnose it, and coverage was denied because the warranty had expired.

  • Transmission20No crashes

Power drops suddenly at highway speed with a reduced acceleration warning. The engine revs but the vehicle barely moves, and sometimes it will not go into reverse. Dealers often trace this to the transmission valve body, and a large parts backorder leaves vehicles sitting at dealers awaiting repair. Other reports describe collapsed lifters with misfires and lost propulsion in traffic, heavy oil consumption, and harsh transmission bangs that trigger limp mode. A sticking coolant control valve keeps the fan running and sets code P1098. Some owners also report the engine shutting off when pulling away from a stop.

  • Electrical91 crash

Power cuts out completely at highway speed. In one report the vehicle stopped in a travel lane and was rear-ended, injuring 3 people. Several of these shutdowns turn out to be complete engine failures. A separate pattern is failure of the telematics or OnStar module, which takes out WiFi, navigation, the app, and software updates. In some cases it also cuts audio for turn signals and safety chimes or causes key fob and no-start problems. GM no longer makes the original module, and extended coverage may not pay the full price of the refurbished replacement.

  • Airbags41 crash

A "service safety restraint system" warning and airbag light come on, sometimes only intermittently. Dealers point to a service bulletin about a wire that was made too short. Owners say the repair is not always covered and may not fix the problem, and one reports it at 42,000 miles. A separate crash report says the passenger airbag began smoking after it deployed and a fire followed. Another owner reports the airbag light coming on along with engine stalling and loud rattling from the engine.

  • Fuel system3No crashes

The engine loses power and stalls at highway speed with no warning, and it sometimes will not restart. Owners describe a false low-fuel reading on a mostly full tank, being unable to shift out of Park after stopping, and code P102A. One dealer replaced the fuel pump control module and called it a common enough failure that the part is kept in stock. A separate report describes the high-pressure fuel pump failing at 73000 miles. Each of these stalls happened in highway traffic, which makes them a real crash risk.

  • Seat belts3No crashes

Rear belts fail in two ways. In one case a belt cinched tight around a child and would not release, so it had to be cut. In others the second-row middle belt or the rear driver's side belt will not latch or lock. Reported mileages range from about 27,000 to 70,000. One dealer diagnosed the problem but did not repair it because of the cost. None of these reports says the manufacturer stepped in.

  • Brakes21 crash

Automatic emergency braking and collision alerts fail to warn or stop the vehicle before an impact. One crash with 1 injury is reported where there were no warning lights, no seat vibration, and no automatic braking, and the manufacturer denied any fault. A separate report describes a U-shaped metal piece falling off after a speed bump on rough pavement. That left the fuel tank hanging on one side until the owner strapped it to the frame.

  • Seats21 crash

Headrests are missing or will not stay in place. Owners report that the middle seats of the second and third row benches have no headrest, which raises neck injury concerns in a crash. A third-row headrest that will not stay up is described as a problem on 2021 and some 2022 models. One dealer is charging to replace it, and the owner says it should fall under an earlier recall.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Suburban owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Engine
53,000 miles. While on highway, engine turned off completely. Coasted off the exit ramp into a parking lot. Engine started again with no issue. 2 days later: engine started knocking very loudly. Vehicle completely died while driving on street. No start, no crank, couldn't shift to neutral. Dash would turn on, but that was it.

Engine
Check engine warning light appeared on dashboard. When servicing the vehicle at dealership, they found catalytic converter not burning up exhaust gases properly. Need to replace y-pipe, part #86781749. I found NHTSA document N232419720 - Emission Recall Incorrect Catalytic Converter Service Part, that references my car make and model. I am requesting an investigation to have this included in a recall and to have replacement costs reimbursed.

Transmission
While driving on vacation our car just slowed down gave the message, “reduced acceleration, drive with care” and then shut off while on the high way. We were able to start it again but after that haven’t had that message but have had the message to service safety restraint system multiple times. I have taken my SUV to the dealership multiple times for both issues and they have said multiple codes generate but they can’t find anything to fix.

Filed with NHTSA, June 2025

Transmission
Vehicle became disabled and will not start due to failed fuel pump control module. This could be very dangerous if this would have happened in traffic; or, if vehicle occupants became stranded in an unsafe area. Vehicle must be towed to dealership to affect repair.

Filed with NHTSA, December 2023

ElectricalCrash reported
The 2022 Suburban lost all power and came to a dead stop in the travel lane of a busy major highway. The vehicle becoming disabled in the middle of flowing travel resulted in a rear end crash from a vehicle traveling approximately 60 MPH.

Filed with NHTSA, July 2024

Electrical
Onstar, my vehicle's core safety communication system, stopped working without notice, without an alert on the dash. Nothing. I press the onstar button and nothing happens. What if I was in trouble? Didn't have my phone? The issue was not communicated to me through the infotainment system. This seems like a serious issue.

Airbags
Car says "service safety restraint system" and airbag light comes on intermittently. Dealer won't cover under safety restraint warranty. They site TSB about a wire that GM made too short but are not sure it will fix it. This car has 42,000. We are worried the safety restraint system won't work and we carry 4 children in our vehicle. This should be covered and a safety recall.

Filed with NHTSA, December 2025

Airbags
“Service safety restraint system” light came on. I feel this is a defect and a serious concern. I’ve seen where others are experiencing the same issue. I bought this vehicle specifically because I wanted to a safe vehicle to drive my 4 children around in.

Recalls to confirm (3)

Recall repairs are free at any Chevrolet dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 25V274000EngineApr 2025

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2021-2024 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Suburban, and Tahoe, GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, and Yukon XL vehicles equipped with a 6.2L V8 gas engine. The connecting rod and/or crankshaft engine components may have manufacturing defects that can lead to engine damage and engine failure.

Risk: Engine failure increases the risk of a crash.

Fix: Dealers will inspect the engine, and as necessary, repair or replace the engine. For vehicles that pass inspection, dealers will add higher viscosity oil, install 6 oil fill cap, replace the oil filter, and update the owner's manual. Repairs will be performed free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 18, 2025.
