Which Grand Cherokee is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

  • The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • On the plug-in hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Grand Cherokee that averages well under the EPA 17 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical1202 crashes

Screens suddenly switch to Italian and metric units, reset saved settings, go black, or stop responding. The forward collision warning light comes on, and auto door locks and paddle shifters stop working. Many reports tie this to an over-the-air update, and dealer resets often fail. On the 4xe, a "Service Hybrid Electric Vehicle System" warning comes with lost power, shutdowns at highway speed, or the SUV shifting itself into park. Owners also describe a battery fire recall that tells them to park outside and not charge, with no remedy yet available. Two reports involve crashes.

  • Steering461 crash

Power steering cuts out with a "power steering unavailable, service required" message, and the wheel becomes very hard to turn. The failure often comes with stability control, blind spot, lane assist, and braking assist warnings at the same time. Many cases start very early, some within the first few hundred miles, and some happen at highway speed. Dealers often cannot reproduce it. Others diagnose a failed steering rack and replace it. One crash with two injuries followed a repeat failure after the rack had been replaced.

  • Transmission461 crash

Most reports describe 4xe hybrids losing drive power while moving. A red wrench and hybrid service warning flash, the engine revs without moving the SUV, or the vehicle drops into park or limp mode. Many cases follow the 95B battery recall repair, and dealers often find no codes or say no fix exists. Other owners are stuck with the battery fire recall's park-outside, no-charging instruction while parts are unavailable. One transmission failure at about 22,000 miles and one sudden-acceleration crash also appear.

  • Suspension181 crash

Rear lower control arms fracture, a control arm bracket fails, and a tension link bolt snaps, sometimes at highway speed. In one crash with an injury, the wheel assembly came off at 67 mph. Many filings concern the rear coil spring recall, which covers springs that may detach, with dealers reporting parts unavailable for long periods. Front clunking and knocking over bumps also show up, often after the suspension warms up. Leaking struts and worn ball joints and bushings round out the reports.

  • Automatic emergency braking18No crashes

Automatic emergency braking slams the SUV to a stop with nothing ahead, including in the middle of intersections and on empty roads. Following drivers have had to swerve to avoid a rear-end hit. A second pattern is a forward collision warning off light that appears along with the Italian-language, metric-unit display glitch. Dealer resets, sometimes billed to the owner, fix it only briefly. A few owners report the system failing to detect a car ahead and not braking at all.

  • Engine171 crash

Hybrid models shut off without warning, including on busy interstates at about 70 mph, and one stall led to a rear-end crash. Others lose power, stall, or will not start after charging-system and hybrid warnings. A separate pattern is a thumping or knocking from failing engine mounts that often appears only after about 30 miles of driving, which makes it hard for dealers to reproduce. Isolated reports cover a water pump leak, worn camshafts causing misfires, and a failed coolant pump.

  • Brakes112 crashes

Emergency braking engages hard at highway speed with no traffic ahead, locking seat belts and nearly causing rear-end crashes. Two crash reports describe the brake pedal not responding while parking, one ending in a building and one in a pole. Owners also report ABS, traction control, and brake booster faults after routine rear brake service done in service mode. Adaptive cruise and automatic braking warnings come and go for months without a lasting dealer fix.

  • Acceleration and cruise control102 crashes

Unintended acceleration in driveways and garages appears in both crash reports, with the engine revving hard in drive or reverse. Adaptive cruise brakes violently when passing large trucks, and dealers have failed to fix it. One owner reports the set speed keeps climbing after the +/- button is released. Front camera faults shut off cruise, lane keeping, and automatic braking, starting at low mileage. Hybrid models also lose power at highway speed or fail to accelerate in electric mode.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Grand Cherokee owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
I received notice regarding the recall for this Hybrid vehicle being unsafe to charge and use the electric portion due to the risk of fire. I am also not to park near any structures because of the risk of fire. There is still no fix for this recall, when I attempted to have fix, told there was no fix, then inquired to trade in, I was offered a 2024 grand cherokee hybrid that has the same recall as my current vehicle and no other remedy.

Filed with NHTSA, October 2024

Electrical
Instrument panel switches to Italian, forward collision off light gets stuck on and my seat moved abruptly while I was driving down the road. I have taken my Jeep into the dealership last year for this problem, it was “fixed” but has come back. Noticed the light stuck on last week. Today while I was driving the panel changed to Italian and my seat moved abruptly. Many people on online forums express experiencing the same problem.

Steering
Had vehicle through multiple warning lights, crash protection inop, lane assist inop, ABS inop, power steering inop, turn signal didnt work. This happend twice. The first time taken to shop and said it was fixed but had it less than 50 miles and same thing happened. It was going down the highway at 70mph and steering went out with no turn signals. Turned vehicle into dealership looking into vehicle buy back

Steering
Brand new car. Driven 600 miles. After shopping at Costco I get to the car and it is completely dead. Will not turn on and every single code possible popped on the screen. Luckily I wasn’t with my kids or out of town or this could’ve been a nightmare. How can this happen with a brand new car? Makes me afraid of what may happen in the future.

Filed with NHTSA, February 2024

Transmission
The battery was recalled due to fire risk, but FSA indicated no repairs is available, and advised driver not to charge the car, and not to park it near any structural. I contacted (1) dealer (2) Chrysler capital (3) Jeep customer service. No body can provide any solution for this matter. I would like to have my leased car returned and get compensated for the months that I have already pre-paid (20 months left).

Filed with NHTSA, October 2024

Transmission
The car will cut off and loose power due to the battery issue It has been in the shop 5 or 6 times for this issue and some of the stays were over 30 days at a time They said they have no fix for the repair needed not to drive it but no one can make payments on a car and not drive it for months waiting on a repair. They refused to buy the car back or replace it with a new one.

Filed with NHTSA, September 2025

Suspension
My vehicle has an open recall (NHTSA Recall Number24V-132) which the car manufacturer has failed to remedy. I contacted them 2 times and each time they told me that part is unavailable and will contact me when ready. The first contact was March 22, 2024 when I took the vehicle for another recall. I have yet to hear from them.

Filed with NHTSA, May 2024

Suspension
left front clunking, knocking after driving for about 30-45 mins and temperature above 70 degrees (F). this happens when driving from small or large bumps on the road. after a three hour interstate the noise was almost constant. i have three recordings while driving of the sound.
