Which Tacoma is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2021 Toyota Tacoma. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 2.7L 4-cyl | 4WD, RWD | 20–21 mpg |
| 3.5L 6-cyl | 4WD, RWD | 20–21 mpg |
- The 2021 Toyota Tacoma was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Tacoma that averages well under the EPA 20 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.
Check the odometer against these mileages
Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.
Premature frame and underbody rust

Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2021 Toyota Tacoma, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Transmission10No crashes
Rear differentials whine and fail early. Dealers find metal shavings, and some trucks are on a second or third unit at around 10,000 miles. Other reports describe oil leaks at the rear differential. The automatic hunts between 5th and 6th gear on cruise control, then drops suddenly to 5th or 4th and surges forward. Several drivers report unintended acceleration lasting 4 to 5 seconds, with RPM jumping to 4000 while braking. Dealers could not reproduce it. The plastic rear coolant bypass joint on the 3.5L V6 leaks, causing hissing, smoke and overheating.
Brakes92 crashes
Brake pedals sink to the floor or lose power. Causes in the reports include leaking brake lines, a failed master cylinder, and brake fluid leaking at the rear drum. One pedal failure came at about 9,400 miles, and a master cylinder replacement came at 51,000. Brakes also grab or pull hard to one side, and one dealer found a caliper malfunction code. Brake assemblies rust badly at low mileage. Two complaints involve crashes with 2 injuries, where the brakes or collision prevention did not stop the truck.
Airbags75 crashes
Airbags do not deploy in serious frontal, side-impact and rollover crashes. Five of the 7 complaints involve crashes, with 12 injuries reported. In one frontal crash into a tree, the passenger airbag stayed off and a belted child in the front passenger seat was killed. Other reports describe seats collapsing or bending forward, a driver seat belt failing in a rollover, and a headrest coming loose. Separately, the front passenger seat track develops play. The fix is a full seat frame assembly, which was on back order.
Electrical5No crashes
Electrical faults include sudden power loss at highway speed. Dash lights flicker, then the engine shuts off, and a failed battery was blamed in that case. Heated seat connectors burn and stop working after a burning smell. Water comes into the cabin through the rear passenger-side vent and soaks the carpet near wiring. Other reports cite pre-collision and stability control malfunction warnings, harsh shifting, and a speedometer that jolts at 85 mph on cruise control. One injury is reported.
Body and structure41 crash
Frames and subframes rust early. Frame paint peels, and owners say Toyota knows about it but has not started a repair program. One report describes severe subframe corrosion and cracked frame welds at 500 miles, which ended with a refund. Doors on both sides do not latch unless slammed hard. The one crash-related complaint involves another driver running a red light, not a defect in the truck.
Engine4No crashes
The rear coolant bypass joint leaks. One repair at 47,800 miles cost $1490.36. Engines also surge from 1200 to 3500 rpm in traffic. Others stall with misfire codes and a check engine light while climbing hills on cruise control. Dealers blamed bad gas, but replacing the whole fuel system did not stop the stalling. Other reports cite engine knocking, plus white smoke and a strong gas smell from the exhaust at startup.
Automatic emergency braking31 crash
Automatic emergency braking slams on with nothing ahead, usually on cruise control. The rear tires skid, and in one case the truck slid into the next lane. The system also fails the other way: no warning and no brake help before a frontal crash, even at its most sensitive setting. Owners also mention a front radar recall for a unit that has no back cover and goes bad. One complaint involves a crash.
Fuel system3No crashes
Fuel pumps fail or make noise. Reports include a highway stall with a fuel smell, traced to a bad pump at about 75,000 miles. Another truck cranked a long time on cold starts at about 62,000. A third pump clacked loudly, and the dealer called it normal. Owners point to two fuel pump campaigns, 23TE01 and 20V682000, but at least one truck was not included in the recall.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Tacoma owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
I was idling in line for food when I noticed my thermostat gauge going slightly higher in temp. All of a sudden I hear a loud hissing sound and smoke coming off of the engine as well as a chemical burn smell. I pulled over to the side in fear that a fire could potentially start. After some research I’ve concluded that it is the rear coolant bypass joint. It was a high stress situation where my family was in my vehicle. Please look into this!

Transmission constantly seeking a gear usually 5th to 6th while using Cruize control. At times over-reving to near redline. End up having to manuall downshift to fourth back and fourt to drive. End up shifting more frequently that would if driving my mauual 6 speed transmission tacoma with the V6 as well.

Hello, I bought a 2021 Toyota Tacoma this year. Soon I discovered that there was a problem with the brake system. We went to this store (Nashville Toyota North) to replace it, but we were told that we had to pay more than $200 for the brake pads ourselves, and My car does not have its own tire unlocking tool, and I was told by this store that I need to pay for it before I can order this unlocking tool that should have been on my car. Thanks!

I was in a severe T-none car accident and the airbags did not deploy. The power restrain activated, the seat locked in place but no airbag deployment. The car that hit me was going at aprox. 50-60MPH. I could have died and so could have my 11 & 6 year old passengers. My sister got cought in between the cabin space and the impacted door.

I was rear ended in my Tacoma and then hit at about 30-35mph in the front driver side. No air bags deployed anywhere in the vehicle and the driver head rest that was fully installed went flying out of the seat. Vehicle is currently waiting to be inspected by insurance representatives.

Heated seat stopped working after smelling a slight burning smell. I investigate and found discolored and burnt electrical connections on the heated seat wires. This happened on the driver's seat. I'm worried the same thing could happen on the passenger side.
