  • The 2024 Hyundai Sonata was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Sonata that averages well under the EPA 28 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2024 Hyundai Sonata, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical9No crashes

The whole electrical system briefly cuts out while driving. Headlights, brake lights, the instrument cluster, the center screen and driver aids go dark for a few seconds, then reboot. It happens without warning, often at night and sometimes at highway speed. Some reports say the engine keeps running. Others say the car seems to shut off while still rolling. False seatbelt warnings can follow. Dealers often cannot reproduce it or find codes. Smaller reports cover a horn that stopped working at 16,000 miles and a speedometer reading up to 6 mph off.

  • Transmission61 crash

Unwanted speed changes and rough shifting lead these reports. In one crash report, the car kept surging forward into a stopped vehicle while the driver pressed hard on the brake. In another, the car dropped from about 60 mph to 20 mph while passing, with no warning lights, three times. Other owners report hard jerks on cold start, and jerky acceleration and shifting that began after a dealer software update. A dealer confirmed a speedometer error, said it comes from the navigation system, and could not fix it.

  • Body and structure6No crashes

Front and rear bumpers pop loose from their brackets. The gap shows most often along the top edge where the driver-side bumper meets the fender. Most gaps are small so far, about 1/8 inch, but one owner found both bumpers detached at roughly 1,500 miles and was told it was a known issue. Pushing the panel back in does not hold. Reports say the problem can return even after a dealer replaces the brackets. Separately, an under-engine splash shield left unfastened after dealer service tore off on the highway.

  • Acceleration and cruise control4No crashes

The speedometer comes and goes, reading about 5 mph off GPS and worse at higher speeds. The error tends to show up after a short stop and restart. One owner saw 26 mph on the display at a true 30. Dealers say they cannot reproduce it, and Hyundai has blamed signal delay in the Waze app. One report is more serious. At 75 mph the car slows itself and the dash shows a 20 MPH limit. Only a restart clears it, and it has happened several times.

  • Steering2No crashes

Stability-control faults cause the car to veer toward highway medians and lose steering precision in turns and roundabouts. Near-collisions are reported at roughly 17,804 to 20,000 miles. The problem reportedly continued after the recall ESC software logic update (24-01-065H-1), and a later dealer visit found no fault. Both reports appear to come from the same owner, so the evidence is thin. Still, the described loss of steering control is a serious risk.

  • Automatic emergency braking2No crashes

Automatic emergency braking can kick in during left turns and bring the car to a full stop, with the collision warning light on. In that report it started at just 60 miles and became a regular event. The other complaint concerns the Driver Attention Warning. It beeps about every 5 minutes during steady, attentive driving and can be set off by sunglasses. Unlike on earlier models, it cannot be turned off.

  • Exterior lights2No crashes

The low beams light too little of the road at night. Road signs and pedestrians stay poorly lit until the high beams come on. One owner noticed this at about 3500 miles on a Hybrid Limited. A second report covers the automatic high beams. When the camera by the rearview mirror is blocked, the high beams stay on all the time while the indicator still shows green. The driver may not realize the high beams are on.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Sonata owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
While driving the dashboard headlights and all safety systems shut off for a brief period and then reset and if driving at night this leaves you completely in the dark till the system resets. All lights exterior and interior all the safety sensors, adaptive cruise control everything shuts off. Anything tied to the electrical system shuts off. The only thing that remains running is the engine.

Electrical
The exterior lights such as head lights and brake lights aswell as all interior electronics shut off at random intervals while driving posing a serious danger early in the morning and at night.

Filed with NHTSA, January 2026

Transmission
I have gone 3 times to dealer because speedometer was off. They confirmed that the speedometer was off but they couldn't do anything about it. They told me that for this car, there is no VSS and the speedometer gets the speed from the navigation system. The navigation system is obviously glitching which is causing this. I am not the only person experiencing this. This has to be taken care of and taken seriously

Filed with NHTSA, May 2025

Transmission
My car tends to jerk very hard two to three times on cold start up and I’ve read that the previous years have had this issue. They are still the same mechanically so I do not know why my year does not have a recall for it

Filed with NHTSA, July 2025

Body and structure
Driver side bumper does not sit flush with driver side fender. It popped out between top edge of bumper and fender... Many compliments on social media..... Hyundai needs to fix these cars. The bumper retention

Recalls to confirm (1)

Recall repairs are free at any Hyundai dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2024 Hyundai Sonata vehicles. The software for the brake lights may cause the brake lights to flash and not illuminate properly. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment.".

Risk: Flashing brake lights may cause confusion for other drivers on the road, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Dealers will update the rear brake light software, free of charge. Additionally, Hyundai will release the software update over-the-air (OTA). Owner notification letters were mailed September 12, 2024. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 267.
