Which Camry is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2023 Toyota Camry. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
2.5L 4-cylGasAWD, FWD29–32 mpg
3.5L 6-cylGasFWD26 mpg
2.5L 4-cylHybridFWD52 mpg
  • The 2023 Toyota Camry was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Camry that averages well under the EPA 26 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2023 Toyota Camry, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Transmission51 crash

The 8-speed automatic shudders, hesitates, shifts hard, and hunts for gears, especially in stop-and-go traffic and on cruise control. Some cases end with the whole transmission needing replacement at 62,000 and 67,000 miles, after warranty coverage ends. One dealer traced a failure to the valve body and pressure solenoid. Other dealers find nothing wrong. One crash report, with 2 injuries, describes a car that ran rough and then surged forward from a red light into the vehicle ahead.

  • Brakes41 crash

Brake complaints vary. In one crash-related report, the brakes fail to stop the car in slowing freeway traffic at under 5,000 miles, and the owner suspects the ABS. Other reports describe vibration from warped front rotors starting around 20,000 miles, a clicking and vibrating noise from the brake pedal area that the manufacturer attributes to the ABS, and the parking brake engaging on its own while driving.

  • Airbags33 crashes

Unprompted deployment while driving is one pattern, and in that report the bags go off with no apparent cause and the car hits a parked vehicle. Another report has the bags deploying with smoke and a hot steering wheel after the car lurches forward at a red light, leaving the occupants unable to get out. A third describes no deployment at all in a heavy front impact. All 3 complaints are crash-related, with 3 injuries.

  • Acceleration and cruise control31 crash

Sudden unintended acceleration is the pattern. One report describes the car surging forward while parking slowly and continuing despite hard braking, then accelerating again when backing out. In another, the engine revs and the brake pedal sinks to the floor at about 25 mph, lasting roughly 25 seconds, at 6,000 miles. No cause was determined. One of the 3 complaints is crash-related, with damage inside a home garage.

  • Electrical3No crashes

The infotainment screen goes black while driving, sometimes for up to 13 minutes, and GPS goes with it. Another report describes the front camera safety feature failing while several warning lights come on at about 40,000 miles, and the dealer calls for a new camera. In a third, pressing the start button to shut down puts the car in accessory mode and it rolls away. The dealer reproduced that roll-away at 30,000 miles but found no cause.

  • Engine3No crashes

Fuel injectors fail and cause slow starts, misfires, rough running, and near-stalls. The engine runs rich, warning lights come on, and several safety systems can shut off. Dealers confirm the injector fault in one car at 11,000 miles and in another just outside the base warranty. A separate complaint describes a throttle delay of several seconds from a stop with no warning lights, which nearly caused an accident.

  • Wheels and tires3No crashes

The 235/45R18 tires draw complaints of loud road noise starting near 25,000 miles, along with swerving or jerking in turns, even after regular rotations and two alignments. One Hankook Kinergy GT tire splits apart between sidewall and tread at 40 to 50 mph, at about 16,000 miles, with no low-pressure warning beforehand. Another owner reports repeated slow leaks and TPMS warnings, including air leaking around the rim.

  • Wipers and visibility2No crashes

Even on the highest setting, the wipers run too slowly to clear heavy rain, leaving little view of the road. Another complaint describes a haze on the windshield that cuts visibility in rain, plus small cracks that appear within 3 months of ownership with no known debris strike. Neither report involves a crash, but both describe poor visibility in wet weather.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Camry owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Brakes
When pressing the brake pedal a clicking vibrating sound comes from the brake pedal area. Per the manufacturer it is coming from abs system and is common for all the toyota camry 2023. This noise is definitely not normal and need to be assessed if there can be hazards related to this.

Filed with NHTSA, January 2025

Brakes
The car randomly puts the parking brake on. I got to drive and the parking brake has activated. The car when placed in park has always made a noise, but prior to the parking brake thing, it started sounding like a squeal instead of the usual noise

Recalls to confirm (2)

Recall repairs are free at any Toyota dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 23V432000Wheels and tiresDo not driveJun 2023

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2023 Camry and Camry Hybrid vehicles. The lug nuts that attach the wheels to the vehicle may be loose, which can result in wheel detachment.

Risk: A wheel that detaches from a moving vehicle can cause a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Owners are advised not to drive their vehicles until the repair has been performed. Dealers will inspect and tighten the lug nuts, and replace any damaged components, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on or before August 14, 2023. Owners may contact Toyota's customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's number for this recall is 23TA05.

  2. 24V128000SeatsFeb 2024

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2023-2024 Camry and Camry Hybrid vehicles. The second-row center and right-side seats may have insufficiently welded head restraint brackets. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 202, "Head Restraints.".

Risk: A head restraint bracket that is insufficiently welded may not properly restrain an occupant during a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

Fix: Dealers will replace the 60% rear seat-back frame sub-assembly, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed April 19, 2024. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's numbers for this recall are 24TB04 and 24TA04.
