  • Transmission 5
  • Brakes 4
  • Airbags 3

Worth adding to your 2022 checks

  • Lift the rear floor mats and check the passenger-side floor for dampness, standing water, or a musty smell.
  • Drive in stop-and-go traffic and on cruise control, feeling for shudder, hard shifts, or gear hunting.
  • Ask for service records showing any transmission diagnosis or repair, especially on cars near 60,000 miles.

Which Camry is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2022 Toyota Camry. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
2.5L 4-cylGasAWD, FWD29–32 mpg
3.5L 6-cylGasFWD26 mpg
2.5L 4-cylHybridFWD52 mpg
  • The 2022 Toyota Camry was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Camry that averages well under the EPA 26 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2022 Toyota Camry, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Airbags107 crashes

Deployment fails in serious crashes, including a deer strike and a high-speed side impact that totaled the car. Other reports describe the opposite: every air bag firing after a curb strike or on entering a heavy rainstorm at highway speed, which led to loss of control and injury. One crash report also says the seat belts failed to lock. Separately, an "SRS Air Bag Malfunction" message and warning light come on at startup, and a dealer could not reproduce the fault. Seven of 10 complaints involve a crash, with 5 injuries.

  • Wipers and visibility6No crashes

The windshield wipers run too slowly on high to clear heavy rain. Drivers report little or no forward view on highways during storms, including in a car only 2 months old. Other reports describe a windshield that cracked on a cold morning with no impact and a sunroof that shattered with a gunshot-like bang at highway speed. None of the complaints in this category involves a crash, but the wiper reports describe near-zero visibility in traffic.

The side mirror housing covers melt on both sides, a complaint flagged as fire-related. The dealer refused warranty coverage, and the manufacturer blamed the climate. A separate report describes a sunroof that seized at highway speed and showed a "Take Vehicle for Maintenance" message. A dealer said it needed full replacement at approximately 46,800 miles. With only 2 complaints on file, these read as isolated failures rather than a clear pattern.

  • Electrical5No crashes

The infotainment screen freezes and drops Android Auto maps and streamed music, sometimes many times in one drive. The problem starts soon after delivery. Reports also cite a stereo menu that stops working, wired connections that cut out over bumps, weak Bluetooth, false warnings about a dirty rear camera, and an unreliable key fob. More serious complaints describe a sudden loss of power along with a cluster of warnings, including hybrid system, braking power, and pre-collision malfunctions. One of those reports adds lost power steering. In another, the dealer replaced the transmission but the parts were backlogged.

  • Acceleration and cruise control41 crash

The car accelerates on its own or will not slow down. Reports describe sudden, loud surges from low speed, one of which ended in a totaled car and 2 injuries. Others describe the engine revving while only the brake is pressed, triggering a warning that both pedals are down, and a hybrid that holds highway speed after the accelerator is released. Neither dealers nor a manufacturer engineer found a cause. One complaint cites loose driver's-side carpet near the pedals, which a dealer traced to carpet cut too short at the factory.

  • Brakes31 crash

The brake pedal stops responding or goes soft. In one report the brakes failed completely on a steep hill. Shifting to neutral or reverse and using the electronic parking brake did nothing, and the car crashed with an injury. Another report describes brakes that turn loose and rattle whenever the proximity brake warning appears, which has happened more than once. A third cites a failed brake booster that made the car almost impossible to stop.

  • Automatic emergency braking31 crash

The pre-collision system fails in both directions. It can slam the car to a full stop while the driver is already slowing in highway traffic, nearly causing a rear-end crash. It can also seem to fight the throttle when the driver pulls into a gap in traffic. In the opposite case, it gave no warning before a low-speed collision in bad weather that caused a back injury at approximately 10,000 miles. One of the 3 complaints involves a crash.

  • Wheels and tires31 crash

Sudden blowouts and sidewall separations happen at highway speed. In one report a rear sidewall separated from the tread on the interstate at approximately 5000 miles, and the car ran off the road down an embankment. Another driver had a tire blow off the rim within 30 minutes of a pressure warning and reports 2 blowouts in the first 13 months. A third found sidewall bubbles on two tires at 48,000 miles. Tires named in the reports include Hankook Kinergy GT on a hybrid.

  • Transmission3No crashes

Transmissions fail early and need replacement. Symptoms include a grinding noise from the front under acceleration or a hum above 40 MPH that grows louder and more frequent. Dealers confirm the transmission as the source and replace it at around 11k miles and under 30,000 miles. Replacement units are on backorder, and one dealer offered no loaner while the car sat. A separate report describes the brake pedal sinking and the car lurching over a parking block at low speed.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Camry owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

AirbagsCrash reported
My car was struck by another car that was traveling at a high speed. It hit my front fender, the side of the front bumper, and drivers door. I slammed into the door. The car was inspected by police and insurance representatives. The car was deemed a total loss but none of the airbags deployed in the crash. There were no warnings or signs of failure prior to the crash.

Filed with NHTSA, March 2024

Wipers and visibility
The speed of the windshield wipers is drastically slower than any other vehicle that I have ever driven, and I have no visibility during heavy rain. It is extremely dangerous for long Southeast Texas commutes.

Filed with NHTSA, October 2023

Wipers and visibility
Windshield cracked out of nowhere. No rock or physical impact happened. I cannot feel the windshield cracks outside or inside. It cracked in 20F weather in the morning.

Filed with NHTSA, November 2023

Electrical
the car started hesitating when accelerating. The vehicle started to lose power and all the lights came on. Check Engine, Pre-collision warning system malfunction, Vehicle stability control system malfunction. Took my vehicle in and Toyota Dealer said at first they couldn't figure out what was wrong. Then decided to replace the transmission. It has been nearly 2 months and still cant get the parts to fix my car. Excuse is Toyota is backlogged. Help

Filed with NHTSA, June 2023

Electrical
The menu display for stereo does not work. There is a recall on the 12.5 inch display which a representative from Toyota stated it could cause the menu options and stereo not to work, but when I took my vehicle to be serviced, it was not part of the recall. Someone needs to look into Toyota about this situation.

Recall repairs are free at any Toyota dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

Risk: An air bag that does not deploy during a crash increases the risk of injury.

Fix: Dealers will inspect and replace the sensor as necessary, free of charge. Interim letters notifying owners of the safety risk were mailed in February 2024. Some final remedy owner letters were mailed October 31, 2024. Letters will continue to be mailed in phases through January 2026. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331.
