Which Pathfinder is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2019 Nissan Pathfinder. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating

  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Pathfinder that averages well under the EPA 22 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2019 Nissan Pathfinder, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical9No crashes

Door lock actuators fail, leaving a single door that will not lock or unlock while the others work. The rear camera screen goes blank in reverse here too. Some owners report the engine shutting off while driving with the battery light on. One no-start problem returned after a stop lamp switch replacement. False parking sensor alerts also switch off cruise control. In one injury report, the power liftgate closed on a person loading the cargo area. One fire report describes a parked car going up in flames overnight, with no cause given.

  • Transmission7No crashes

Transmission failures show up as delayed shifts, poor throttle response, the engine revving without moving the car, and stalling while turning or backing up. One failure came at 123,000 miles. A transfer case failed completely at 25,800 miles with loud noises at highway speed. The dealer blamed tire tread, and the repair cost $5,357. Other owners describe grinding noises and sudden loss of acceleration with ABS, traction, and 4WD warnings lit. In one case the cause turned out to be the rear hubs.

  • Brakes7No crashes

Several owners report the brake pedal dropping to the floor with no braking, sometimes more than once, at roughly 40 to 45 mph. Some had to shift into park to stop. One car was found low on brake fluid, and the failure came back after repair. Other reports describe ABS, traction, and check engine lights with a dark instrument cluster. In one case a dealer traced this to brake fluid leaking onto a circuit board and linked it to recall 19V807000. Rigid pedals, no-starts, ABS actuator failures, and fast pad wear also appear.

  • Engine7No crashes

Mechanics find metal shavings in the oil and recommend a full engine replacement. Other engines knock, lose oil pressure, and fail within minutes. Most failures come at high mileage, including one at 170,000 miles, though at least one engine failed under 100,000. Other owners report the engine burning oil fast, with white smoke and sludge after short change intervals. Many say they kept up regular synthetic oil changes. Separate reports describe jerking and the RPM dropping to zero, which leaves the car stalled in traffic.

  • Acceleration and cruise control51 crash

Adaptive cruise control shuts off at random when the emergency braking warning or a radar obstruction message appears, and sometimes ABS and traction lights come on with it. Some owners report false crash warnings and automatic braking at highway speed. One says the cruise control speeds up on its own. Owners suspect the radar sensor, and dealer repairs have not stopped the warnings. One crash report describes hitting a parked car while reversing with a stiff accelerator pedal at about 70,000 miles.

  • Body and structure5No crashes

The front sunroof glass shatters at highway speed with a loud bang. Glass sprays outward over the roof, and owners say no traffic or overpass was nearby. A closed interior shade kept glass out of the cabin. Dealers blamed rocks. Two of the reports describe the same incident. Other owners say the hood flutters and vibrates hard at highway speed from the start of ownership. One dealer inspected the latch and found it normal.

  • Fuel system3No crashes

Power drops suddenly at highway speed, with check engine and ABS lights. Trouble codes point to low fuel rail pressure and the fuel pump. Another report describes a strong fuel smell that gave occupants headaches and continued after a dealer blamed a loose gas cap. A third owner hears water sloshing inside the vehicle after refueling, at about 28,000 miles. The three reports do not share a common cause.

  • Airbags21 crash

Both reports involve brakes that fail to slow the car before a low-speed rear-end collision. In one crash, the frontal air bags only partly came out of their housings on impact. In the other, the driver says the air bag deployed before the car hit anything. Damage to both vehicles was light. These reports tie closely to the brake failures described under service brakes.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Pathfinder owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
Initial item includes power tailgate not operating properly and on at least one occassion it began to close while operator was loading groceries into the back of the vehicle - hitting operator on back. Another item is now occassional screen glitch when using back-up camera/display Lastly - power windows not operating well Vehicle has less than 36,000 miles.

Electrical
While driving the car on country road at speed around 40 miles per hour the car engine shutdown and the car slowly came to a stop. The battery light came on. I put the car in park and restarted the engine. A similar action occurred about a month ago while driving in a federal park and only moving about 20 mph.

Filed with NHTSA, February 2022

Transmission
Idle needle jumping when turning the car on. Delay in shifting gears and throttle response. Forward collision warning goes off at random times even when no cars are present.

Filed with NHTSA, July 2025

Brakes
On three separate incidents my brakes have totally failed. I went to apply the brakes and the pedal went to the floor with no braking action at all. The most recent occurrence we were exiting a freeway and coming to a traffic signal. Our speed was approximately 45 MPH and upon applying the brakes they completely failed. The pedal went to the floor. Thankfully we were able to cross the intersection without a collision and slow down on an uphill on ramp..

Filed with NHTSA, December 2025

Engine
Complete engine failure. I did regular oil changes about every 4000 miles and the last one I did early at around 3200 miles the oil was sludge and after the engine knocked and low oil pressure light came on and the engine blew all within 2 miles of the light coming on and me trying to find a safe place to pull over. These engines have a defect somewhere and I know it didn't happen from improper maintenance.

Filed with NHTSA, July 2025

Engine
Upon a tune up request, mechanic discovered metal shavings in the engine. I got a second opinion, and was told that I needed a new engine. Vehicle is still under 100,000 miles.

Recalls to confirm (2)

Recall repairs are free at any Nissan dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 19V807000BrakesPark outsideNov 2019

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2015-2018 Nissan Murano, 2016-2018 Nissan Maxima, and 2017-2019 Nissan Pathfinder and Infiniti QX60 vehicles. These vehicles were previously recalled and unrepaired, or inspected and determined to not need a repair, under recall number 18V-601. In addition, this recall expands the previous population. The Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) actuator pumps may allow brake fluid to leak onto an internal circuit board.

Risk: A brake fluid leak on the circuit board may result in an electrical short, increasing the risk of a fire.

Fix: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ABS actuator, free of charge. Owners will receive a second notice when remedy parts become available, currently expected to be during summer 2020. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Note: If the ABS warning light remains illuminated for more than 10 seconds after engine start up, owners are advised to park the vehicle outdoors away from other vehicles or structures and to not drive the vehicle.

  2. 19V654000Backup cameraSep 2019

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2018-2019 Nissan Altima, Armada, Frontier, Kicks, Leaf, Maxima, Murano, NV, NV200, Pathfinder, Rogue, Rogue Sport, Sentra, Titan, Titan Diesel, Versa Note and Versa Sedan vehicles, as well as Infiniti Q50, Q60, QX30 and QX80 vehicles. Additionally included are 2019 Nissan GT-R and Taxi and Infiniti QX50, QX60, Q70, Q70L vehicles. The back-up camera and display settings can be adjusted such that the rear view image is no longer visible and the system will retain that setting the next time the vehicle is placed in reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rear Visibility.".

Risk: The lack of an image in the back-up camera display increases the risk of a crash.

Fix: Nissan will notify owners in phases, having dealers update the back-up camera settings software, free of charge. The recall began November 11, 2019 and all affected VINs should be activated. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669 or INFINITI customer service at 1-800-662-6200.
