Which Pathfinder is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2018 Nissan Pathfinder. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 3.5L 6-cyl | 4WD, FWD | 22–23 mpg |
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Pathfinder that averages well under the EPA 22 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.
Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2018 Nissan Pathfinder, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Transmission101 crash
The CVT slips, whines, or stops sending power to the wheels and acts as if it is in neutral. This happens at freeway speeds and below 20 mph. Other reports describe hesitation, a metallic noise at low rpm in turns, and bucking with high revving that leaves the car creeping along the shoulder. Dealers often cannot reproduce the fault. One report links CVT trouble to two engine failures. Separate complaints cover 4x4 that will not stay engaged, and a highway shake and explosion that set off the airbags and injured a passenger.
Electrical8No crashes
The display control unit goes blank or loops. That takes out the steering wheel controls and hands-free calling, and the backup camera can take 2 to 10 seconds to appear. A voluntary recall covers this unit on some 2018 and 2019 Pathfinders, but owners report that their VINs were left out. The radar sensor for automatic braking and adaptive cruise fails, sometimes again after it is replaced. Other reports describe the car shutting off and restarting while driving, windows that will not close, doors that lock with the keys inside, and a trunk that will not open.
Acceleration and cruise control8No crashes
Intelligent cruise control cuts out when the front radar reports an obstruction. That also disables collision-avoidance braking, so drivers have to brake hard when they come up on slower traffic. Some say the cruise later comes back on and suddenly accelerates. The fault comes and goes for 2 to 15 minutes at a time and shows up on many drives. Separate reports describe sudden power loss, as if the car shifted into neutral, between 30 and 60 mph. Others mention an ABS light that stays on and cruise control that will not re-engage until speed drops 5 to 10 mph.
Brakes7No crashes
Most of these reports are about the ABS actuator recall. ABS, traction control, and brake warning lights keep coming back after the recall repair, in one case at about 47,000 miles. Owners also describe recall parts that were not available and a dispute over paying for a rental car. A contaminated stop lamp switch can keep the car from starting, block shifting, and leave the brake lights dark. The remaining reports repeat the front radar fault, where an obstruction warning turns off cruise control and emergency braking.
Steering61 crash
The wheel locks up without warning in a few reports, and two of them end in a crash or airbag deployment. One seizure happened at 70 mph at about 11,000 miles. Other owners describe the car pulling hard left and right after repeated cruise control sensor replacements, and collision warnings that beep and jerk the car when no traffic is nearby. One complaint ties weak power-steering response to a failed PCV system that filled the engine with sludge and caused it to lose power.
Engine6No crashes
Catastrophic failure is the main pattern, and some cars lose a second engine after the first is replaced. Reports include a broken camshaft with metal shavings in the engine, tailpipe smoke, knocking at 75,000 miles, and a total loss of power in busy highway traffic. A metal-to-metal rattle from the front passenger side came back even after the engine was replaced. Other complaints describe a failing left radiator cooling fan at 26,000 miles, and a check engine light with erratic rpm at under 400 miles.
Stability control5No crashes
A "front radar unavailable due to obstruction" warning appears while driving and turns off automatic braking and cruise control. Bridges and overhead signs set off false forward collision warnings, in one case at least twice a week. Dealers often cannot reproduce the warning and decline to replace the sensor. AEB and slip indicator lights come back after a recalled sensor is fixed. One report pairs those lights with engine misfires on a new car. One complaint concerns a 2019 model.
Backup camera3No crashes
In reverse, the display control unit shows a black screen, a fading Nissan logo, or an upside-down rear camera image. These failures appear at about 89,000 miles and as late as 131,000 miles. A dealer and an independent shop both found that the display unit needed replacing. Owners link the problem to a recall campaign, but their VINs are not covered, so the repair falls outside the recall and the units often stay broken.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Pathfinder owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
Multiple times (greater than 10) at highway speeds Forward collision avoidance warning light displayed and applied automatic braking. This has happened with and without cruise control engaged. Vehicle feels like transmission slips then reengages while traveling at highway speeds. Repair shop has been unable to reproduce.

The transmission is going bad which makes it dangerous to drive. Had it 2 days and I check my FIXD module and found code. Took to where I purchased it and the drained cvt fluid and now makes a whinning sound and garage knows. U was told they inspected it before selling it to me. No codes where on dash either.

While driving the car it randomly turns off and turns back on it also jerks initially. All lights on the dashboard turn off and back on, speakers make a loud BOOM sound! Have experienced the car not starting. Bought a new battery thinking that was the issue, it wasn't.
Filed with NHTSA, March 2024
The windows stopped going up unless you turn the car off and wait then they slowly go up. The back lights do no work at all when they are turned on.
Filed with NHTSA, December 2022
ABS Light comes on and stays on...Checking for recalls seeing if our vehicle could have same problem with brake fluid leaking on internal circuit board and possible fire danger. Also, several times our PATHFINDER will lose power or act as if you have shifted the transmission into neutral. This has happened at speeds from 30mph to 60 mph. Stalls and then after a few seconds it will resume speed.
Filed with NHTSA, February 2022
Front collision shuts off intermittently for no reason. Causes cruise control to shut off immediately and disabled collision avoidance breaking. If cruise is on and approaching slower vehicle car will not slow down causing driver to break aggressively.
Filed with NHTSA, July 2023
The stop lamp switch has become contaminated with silicon off-gassing from silicon-based grease used in surrounding components in close proximity. This is causing the car to not start, not able to switch gears, and break light is not turning on.

Recalls to confirm (3)
Recall repairs are free at any Nissan dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2015-2018 Nissan Murano, 2016-2018 Nissan Maxima, and 2017-2019 Nissan Pathfinder and Infiniti QX60 vehicles. These vehicles were previously recalled and unrepaired, or inspected and determined to not need a repair, under recall number 18V-601. In addition, this recall expands the previous population. The Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) actuator pumps may allow brake fluid to leak onto an internal circuit board.
Risk: A brake fluid leak on the circuit board may result in an electrical short, increasing the risk of a fire.
Fix: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ABS actuator, free of charge. Owners will receive a second notice when remedy parts become available, currently expected to be during summer 2020. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Note: If the ABS warning light remains illuminated for more than 10 seconds after engine start up, owners are advised to park the vehicle outdoors away from other vehicles or structures and to not drive the vehicle.

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2015-2017 Nissan Murano, 2016-2017 Nissan Maxima, 2017-2018 Nissan Pathfinder, and 2017 Infiniti QX60 vehicles. The Anti-Lock Brake (ABS) actuator pumps may allow brake fluid to leak onto an internal circuit board.
Risk: A brake fluid leak on the circuit board may result in an electrical short, increasing the risk of a fire.
Fix: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the serial number on the ABS actuator, replacing it as necessary, free of charge. The recall began October 29, 2018. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Note: When brake fluid has leaked onto the circuit board, the ABS warning lamp will remain illuminated for more than 10 seconds after engine start up. If this occurs, owners are advised to park the vehicle outdoors away from other vehicles or structures and to not drive the vehicle.
19V654000Backup cameraSep 2019
Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2018-2019 Nissan Altima, Armada, Frontier, Kicks, Leaf, Maxima, Murano, NV, NV200, Pathfinder, Rogue, Rogue Sport, Sentra, Titan, Titan Diesel, Versa Note and Versa Sedan vehicles, as well as Infiniti Q50, Q60, QX30 and QX80 vehicles. Additionally included are 2019 Nissan GT-R and Taxi and Infiniti QX50, QX60, Q70, Q70L vehicles. The back-up camera and display settings can be adjusted such that the rear view image is no longer visible and the system will retain that setting the next time the vehicle is placed in reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rear Visibility.".
Risk: The lack of an image in the back-up camera display increases the risk of a crash.
Fix: Nissan will notify owners in phases, having dealers update the back-up camera settings software, free of charge. The recall began November 11, 2019 and all affected VINs should be activated. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669 or INFINITI customer service at 1-800-662-6200.
