Which Pathfinder is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2023 Nissan Pathfinder. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating

  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Pathfinder that averages well under the EPA 23 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2023 Nissan Pathfinder, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical15No crashes

Stalling and unexpected shifts into neutral come up most, often when auto stop/start restarts the engine at a light. Some cars will not restart for several minutes, and one went into limp mode on the interstate. The backup camera shows a black screen or blanks out briefly in reverse. A forward warning light stays on even after a $2500 module replacement. Owners also report doors locking with the key and a child inside, a self-starting alarm, a stuck OK button on the steering wheel, and a dead battery that needed a tow.

  • Brakes14No crashes

Rear pads and rotors wear out early, usually between 12,500 and 20,000 miles, while the front brakes are still in good shape. Drivers notice vibration when braking or a squeal, or a technician finds it at an oil change. Dealers point to small rear pads and the electronic parking brake. One independent mechanic found the rear brakes were not fully releasing. Nissan treats the repair as normal wear, and one owner has replaced the rear brakes twice. Separate reports describe a pedal that sank to the floor and an automatic braking fault light.

  • Transmission111 crash

After auto stop/start shuts the engine off at a light, the transmission sometimes shifts into neutral when the driver lets off the brake, and a full restart may be needed. The ten-speed hesitates while it hunts for a gear when pulling away from a rolling stop. Other reports include an AT warning light with grinding that ended in a shifter replacement, unintended revving to 2,000 RPMs, and a crash-related rollaway after Park was engaged. Single owners report failed coil packs, a broken flex plate, and an intake runner vacuum leak, with that part on national back order.

  • Fuel system9No crashes

The engine stalls without warning in traffic, when merging onto highways, and once at 70 mph on cruise control. After a restart some cars stay in limp mode with a rough idle. Dealers usually replace the fuel pump, and one owner needed 3 fuel pump replacements in under a year. Others describe jerking and shaking under acceleration that came back after the fuel injectors were replaced, and shifts into neutral linked to start/stop. A few owners report fuel economy well below the rated figure.

  • Engine5No crashes

Power cuts out while the car is moving, including under full throttle during a lane change and at 35 mph with the check engine light on. Restarting after auto stop/start can be slow, and the motor hesitates and stutters before it pulls. Several reports say the car slips into neutral or manual mode from a stop, which nearly caused rear-end collisions. Dealers often cannot reproduce the problem, and software updates have not fixed it. One report also mentions loud noise at startup and an oil warning light.

  • Wipers and visibility3No crashes

Glass breaks easily, according to one owner: a cracked windshield, a star chip, pitting, and a driver window crack that spread overnight. Another owner says the washer nozzles spray too low on the windshield, so the wipers cannot clear it in snow. A third reports a driver-side mirror that shakes at highway speeds and on rough pavement, which blurs the view. The other mirror does not shake. With only 3 complaints in this category, no clear pattern emerges.

  • Airbags21 crash

One injury crash is on file. The air bag warning light was on before the collision, forward collision avoidance did not warn the driver, and the driver's front air bag deployed with rips along its sides, injuring the driver's wrist and arm. The second complaint describes rattling and clicking from the air bag, and the dealer's first available appointment was a month away. With only 2 complaints, there is no clear pattern.

  • Seats21 crash

The front passenger captain's chair frame loosens, so the seat shakes and makes noise with someone in it. In one case the frame was replaced and the problem returned within a year, and it got worse after a deer strike. The rear seatbelt warning chimes when the middle seat is empty. A separate seat complaint also describes the car shifting into neutral at highway speed, shutting off, and skidding to a stop. There are only 2 complaints here.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Pathfinder owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
Vehicle has auto stop/start. When at a red light and vehicle stops moving engine will shut off. When light goes green and foot is removed from break, vehicle starts up. Sometimes when starting back up it goes into neutral automatically. Other times the vehicle attempts to start. But shifts into neutral and shuts down completely. At this point you must manually restart the engine. This has created safety concerns for my family

Electrical
Forward warning system dashboard light goes on and does not shut off. Module has been replaced at a cost of $2500 and this has not solved the problem. Light has gone off with a chime alarm and yellow triangle with an exclamation point too. We were told we needed to get it fixed as soon as possible for safety reasons. Unfortunately, Nissan dealer can't seem to fix the problem and we're afraid to drive the vehicle.

Brakes
I was informed of a need to replace worn rear brake pads and rotors due to excessive wear after just over 19,000 miles. Being treated as a wear item despite the fact that the issue is common and known by the manufacturer as an issue. After almost 3 years no recall has been done. Thankfully this was caught prior to the brakes entering a failing state.

Brakes
Was told today that my rear brakes need to be replaced by the dealer. The vehicle has only 18,000 miles and most of that is highway. They said it seems the rear brakes are wearing out faster than normal on these due to the small size of the pad and electronic parking brake. This is not safe and unfair.

Filed with NHTSA, May 2024

Transmission
Incident 1: Rear brakes needing replaced within 30,000 miles. Rear brakes at that mileage is unheard of. Incident 2: Coil packs failing and leaving me stranded. 34,000 miles Incident 3: Most recent at 44,000 the flex plate is now broken. With a simple internet search the flex plate is a reoccurring issue that a lot of motorist are experiencing.

Transmission
Fuel .performance..low .consumer 17.9 and 18 combined fuel.. nivel oil engine low..same reverse and forward. Same times forced gear transmission noised .

Fuel system
Last July I felt jerking after accelerating on highway and decided to go in for service and found fuel injectors were the issues which these were replaced. Then again after 3 months now feeling jerking again and shaking after accelerating. There is no warning light appearing as I feel it. After reviewing with others 2023 pathfinders, afraid my vehicle may stall and not be repaired. I’m still on payment for this new vehicle.

Fuel system
The vehicle shifted itself to neutral when stopping at a red light. I had to shift the car back to drive. When I tried to pull off from the red light, the car nearly shut off. Just researching other similar incidents, the problem is related to the start/stop function.

Recalls to confirm (1)

Recall repairs are free at any Nissan dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 23V268000SeatsApr 2023

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2023 Rogue, Pathfinder, and Infiniti QX60 vehicles. The driver's powered seat may not be fully secured to the seat frame, causing the seat frame welds to detach from the rear inboard seat bracket.

Risk: An unsecured seat with broken welds may not properly restrain an occupant during a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

Fix: Dealers will inspect the driver's seat rail clearance, and if necessary, replace the driver's seat cushion frame, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed June 10, 2023. Owners may contact Nissan's customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall is PC966, PC967.
