Which Pathfinder is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2022 Nissan Pathfinder. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 3.5L 6-cyl | 4WD, FWD | 23 mpg |
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Pathfinder that averages well under the EPA 23 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.
Check the odometer against these mileages
Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.
Premature rear brake wear
20,000–28,000 miles
Transmission shifting and power loss
28,000–34,725 miles
Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2022 Nissan Pathfinder, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Brakes20No crashes
Rear brake pads wear out far faster than the fronts, often before 20,000 miles and rarely lasting past 42,000. Symptoms include a high-pitched squeak in reverse, grinding, vibration under hard braking and warped rotors, usually with no dashboard warning. Some owners have replaced rear pads four times while the fronts were untouched. Dealers sometimes cover the work, and rear brake parts have been on back order. A few reports describe front calipers overheating and smoking at highway speed.
Transmission171 crash
The transmission shifts itself into neutral while driving and cuts power in traffic, on highway merges or below 40 mph. The engine revs to about 4000 rpm and the car does not accelerate. Some cars then lock in gear and need a tow. Messages such as "check shift level position" or "SERVICE A/T" and a check engine light sometimes appear. Dealers often cannot reproduce the fault. Reported fixes include TCM reprogramming and 12-volt battery replacement. Other reports describe harsh shifts and lurching before stops, plus one crash-related case of AWD overheating and rollback while towing uphill.
Seats14No crashes
The front passenger seat sits very low and has no height adjustment. Shorter adults struggle to see over the dash and worry about hitting it or the airbag in a crash. Some owners use cushions or homemade risers. Owners note that Nissan added passenger seat height adjustment for 2023. Both injury reports involve the second-row EZ seat pitching forward fast with a child seat attached, either after a bump or when a child in the third row pressed the button. Driver heated seats also stop working, in one case around 37,000 miles.
Electrical11No crashes
Most of these reports involve starting and shifting faults. Cars click without starting, show many error messages, or will not release the brakes. Some shift to neutral or roll after Park is pressed. Because the shifter is electronic, a stalled car cannot be moved out of traffic. Other reports cover a backup camera that goes black while reversing, forward collision sensor faults, random radio and stereo shutdowns, and a wireless charger that overheated a phone. One fire report describes the car burning while parked and switched off.
Acceleration and cruise control6No crashes
The accelerator pedal sticks down or snaps off at its mount, sometimes during highway merges. One stuck pedal pushed the car past 90 mph even though the factory mats were in place. Other reports describe the car refusing to go faster than 20 mph at about 4000 rpm until it is restarted. In one case a dealer replaced the battery and the fault came back. Unintended shifts to neutral and park also show up here, along with one engine failure at 93,000 miles that required a full engine replacement.
Body and structure5No crashes
Water gets into the cabin through clogged sunroof drains. It also gets past door weather stripping and runs behind the inner door panels, soaking the insulation and leading to mold and persistent odor. Repeat dealer visits often end with only the drains cleared. Sunroof glass also bursts while driving with nothing hitting it. Smaller complaints include cabin rattles, door handle lock sensors that work only some of the time, heated seats that never warm up, and infotainment reboots.
Seat belts4No crashes
The seat belt warning shows belts as unbuckled even when every occupant is buckled in. It either chimes for the whole drive or puts red marks over seats on the occupant display. To fix it, dealers have replaced the driver and rear center buckles. At least one owner was refused coverage under a dealer-sold warranty. A separate report describes a rear left belt that does not latch properly and comes loose.
Wipers and visibility4No crashes
The panoramic sunroof shatters with no impact, usually on the freeway and once while the car was parked in a driveway. The glass breaks suddenly and can burst outward. At least one car's sunroof shattered a second time after the first was replaced. Coverage is uncertain: one car sat at the dealer while Nissan engineering decided whether the repair would be paid.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Pathfinder owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
Upon routine service at 15,393 miles I was told that my rear brakes and rotors needed replacement. The service advisor stated that they are at a 2 and failed the multi-point inspection. I brought the vehicle to an independent shop and they confirmed the rear brakes needed immediate replacement. Upon further research, this seems to be a pattern for the 2022 Pathfinder with many people needing to replace rear brakes at a very low mileage.

The vehicle has just under 20,000 miles and when reversing is getting a high pitched squeak. There are a ton of online forums where other owners of a 2022 Nissan Pathfinder are stating they're being told that the rear brake pads are literally worn down to metal while the front brakes are perfectly fine. This is clearly a defect of some sort where the brake system should not be malfunctioning like this.

Around 28,000 miles vehicle would exhibit odd shifting characteristics while transmission fluids were still coming up to temperature. Car surges forward while coasting before coming to a stop. Dealership updated TCM software but car still lurches forward while downshifting before a stop.

Transmission started slipping when I was getting on the Interstate. It was revving very loud but car would not move. I almost got hit from behind. This car is not even 3 years old. I am very concerned for my safety. I should still be in warranty for this issue.

The passenger seat is extremely low and passenger can't see out over dashboard. I believe this to be a danger with the airbags. There is no way to adjust the height and it is a power seat. The driver side adjusts height but barely high enough for short drivers..Lots of complaints online. Please have them put in a fix for this as could be a danger in the future. People are trying to fix this with homemade material made into risers also a danger.

Passenger seat is too low/not equal to driver’s seat. Driver’s seat has 10-way functions including raising the seat up and down. Passenger seat does not. My wife can’t see over the hood clearly and there may be an accident where she might hit the dashboard or the airbags might injure her when triggered because the seat is too low. In fact, she sits on a separate seat cushion which is ridiculous.

I have a 2022 Nissan Pathfinder, If this model year runs out of gas or stalls in traffic with the engine inoperative the vehicle cannot be moved out of the lane of traffic. It has an electronic transmission therefore the vehicle has to stay in the lane of traffic until towed. All wheel vehicle would be very criticle. Three dealers have verbally confirmed there is no remedy at this time.

The car delays start. When I press the push to start, the radio will come on but all the indicators will be lit but the car wouldn't start. Sometimes I have to press the start button multiple times. Forward collision warning sensor randomly turns off. Sensor will say malfunctioning at random times.

Where the 2022 fits in the Pathfinder's history
Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.
The 2022 is the first model year of the Pathfinder's fifth generation (2022–2023). First years of a redesign often carry teething problems that Nissan fixes in later years, so the checks above matter more than usual.
Nissan updated the Pathfinder for 2023, so a 2022 does not have those changes.
What changed for 2023 (not on a 2022)
- Introduction of Rock Creek Edition
- Wireless smartphone charging

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2022 Pathfinder vehicles. The third-row headrests may have an improper weld or misaligned internal components, which can allow the headrest to move or detach. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 202, "Head Restraints.".
Risk: Headrests that move or detach may not adequately restrain occupants in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
Fix: Dealers will replace all three third-row seat headrests, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed November 17, 2021. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall is PC844.
21V743000SeatsSep 2021
Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2022 Pathfinder vehicles. The second-row seat back frames may have insufficient welds that could separate.
Risk: Seat backs with separated welds may fail to adequately restrain occupants during a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
Fix: Dealers will inspect and replaced the seat assemblies as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed November 17, 2021. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's numbers for this recall are PC845, PC846, and PC847.
21V706000Door latches and locksSep 2021
Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2022 Pathfinder vehicles. Insufficient welds may allow the secondary hood latch retainer bracket to detach from the front bumper assembly. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 113, "Hood Latch System.".
Risk: A detached secondary hood latch may allow the hood to open if the primary hood latch is not engaged, obstructing the driver's view and increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: Dealers will inspect and replace the secondary hood latch bracket as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed November 17, 2021. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall is PC840.
