Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2019 Nissan Murano, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Automatic emergency braking7No crashes

Automatic emergency braking slams on with nothing ahead, bringing the car to a hard, near-dead stop. Several reports place this in parking garages at low speed. Others describe it at around 30 to 45 mph on empty roads. The main risk is being rear-ended by traffic behind. A second pattern is the AEB warning light or a malfunction message coming on and going off for no clear reason. Dealers often find no stored codes. Some recalibrate the system, but the problem comes back.

  • Airbags51 crash

The passenger airbag can switch itself off while someone is sitting in the seat. The passenger 'no airbag' light comes on intermittently, and some reports describe a failed passenger detection sensor. In crash reports, the passenger airbag sometimes stays off while other airbags deploy. One crash caused an injury that the owner blames on the knee airbag. Across 5 complaints, 1 involves a crash and 2 involve injuries. A dealer adjustment is one reported fix for the warning light.

  • Acceleration and cruise control4No crashes

On downhill grades, cruise control lets the car speed up instead of holding the set speed. Owners say it gains 10 to 15 mph or more on gentle slopes, without downshifting or engine braking. Dealers and Nissan say the system works as designed and advise against using cruise control on hills. A different report describes the car sitting still for about three seconds after the accelerator is pressed, then surging forward. That nearly caused a collision.

  • Brakes3No crashes

Several brake failures are reported. In one, the brake pedal sinks to the floor while the car is stopped and the car keeps rolling, then braking returns. In another, the brake warning light comes on, driver-assist features stop working, and the dealer warns that braking may fail intermittently and replaces the ABS motor. Some reports here describe the same false emergency braking with nothing ahead that appears under forward collision avoidance.

  • Exterior lights2No crashes

Water gets inside the sealed LED headlight housings. Moisture shows up behind the lens, and the light malfunctions or bulbs keep burning out. Both sides can be affected. Dealers say the LED assembly cannot be serviced, so the whole headlight must be replaced, with one estimate of about $2,400 per unit.

  • Equipment2No crashes

The navigation screen lists upcoming turns in reverse order, with the next turn at the bottom. Drivers have to look away from the road longer to find it. A dealer was told a software update applies. Other reports describe problems with the touchscreen radio and an automatic emergency braking warning light that the dealer cannot diagnose or fix.

  • Wipers and visibility2No crashes

The windshield chips easily. Tiny stones thrown from vehicles several lengths ahead leave large chips on both city streets and highways. One report counts 5 chips in less than 2 months. This category also includes a report of the panoramic sunroof shattering on its own at highway speed with a gunshot-like bang and no debris strike, the same failure described under the other category.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Murano owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Automatic emergency braking
Purchased demo Murano in August 2019 with 4500 miles. Took it back to dealership in January 2021 after the orange forward emergency braking warning light appeared on dash. They said it was not covered under warranty. September 2021 at 18000 miles the waring light and the 'Malfunction warning' text both displayed without driver input. Normal driving condition and no vehicle in front of me to hint potential collision so there is no reason to alert driver.

Filed with NHTSA, September 2021

Automatic emergency braking
Purchased the Car 8/2019. 2/3 Times Per Year, and always in a parking garage, The Forward Collision Warning is Triggered for No Reason and the Car Slams on the Breaks Automatically. It's Dangerous and Jarring. Everytime It has happened there have been 0 Cars Around Me, and no reason for it to happen. This needs to be fixed.

Filed with NHTSA, January 2022

Airbags
While traveling experiences slight vibration in which passenger side tire PULLED oncming lane, nonemergency brakes were applied not notification of crossing outside of lane, passenger side tire blew out, causing to hit a Culvert and all airbags deployed with passenger air bag off. The vehicle would not start.

Filed with NHTSA, August 2023

Brakes
I lost brake pressure at a red light today. I ended up pressing the brake all the way to the floor and kept rolling. The light turned green and I pressed the gas and the brake started working after that and has worked since. I started googling and I saw this was an issue in older Muranos as well. I do not want to take it in and spend a bunch of money on master cylinders, etc when it may not be the issue. Please investigate.

Filed with NHTSA, March 2024

Brakes
Emergency braking system activated without anything in front of the vehicle. EBS lighting on the dash came on and vehicle made a weird sound to stop. Has happened several times in the past month, most recent was today.

Where the 2019 fits in the Murano's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2019 is the fifth model year of the Murano's third generation (2015–2024).

Nissan updated the Murano for 2020, so a 2019 does not have those changes.

What changed for 2020 (not on a 2019)

  • Updated front and rear fascias
  • New wheel design
  • Nissan Safety Shield 360 as standard for SV and SL models

Recalls to confirm (1)

Recall repairs are free at any Nissan dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2018-2019 Nissan Altima, Armada, Frontier, Kicks, Leaf, Maxima, Murano, NV, NV200, Pathfinder, Rogue, Rogue Sport, Sentra, Titan, Titan Diesel, Versa Note and Versa Sedan vehicles, as well as Infiniti Q50, Q60, QX30 and QX80 vehicles. Additionally included are 2019 Nissan GT-R and Taxi and Infiniti QX50, QX60, Q70, Q70L vehicles. The back-up camera and display settings can be adjusted such that the rear view image is no longer visible and the system will retain that setting the next time the vehicle is placed in reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rear Visibility.".

Risk: The lack of an image in the back-up camera display increases the risk of a crash.

Fix: Nissan will notify owners in phases, having dealers update the back-up camera settings software, free of charge. The recall began November 11, 2019 and all affected VINs should be activated. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669 or INFINITI customer service at 1-800-662-6200.
