Which CX-5 is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2019 Mazda CX-5. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 2.5L 4-cylGas | 4WD, FWD | 26–28 mpg |
| 2.2L 4-cylDiesel | 4WD, FWD | 28–29 mpg |
- The 2019 Mazda CX-5 was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A CX-5 that averages well under the EPA 26 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.
Check the odometer against these mileages
Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.
Transmission failure, car stops moving
22,000–25,000 miles
Cracked cylinder head oil leak
30,000–80,000 miles
Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2019 Mazda CX-5, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Engine78No crashes
Cylinder heads crack and dump oil onto the hot exhaust side of the engine. Drivers notice a burning-oil smell in the cabin, white smoke from under the hood, and oil pooling on the ground. Some cracks leak coolant instead and trigger an overheating warning. Many cars show no warning light until oil runs low. Failures cluster between about 30,000 and 80,000 miles, often just after the powertrain warranty ends, and repair quotes reach $8,000. Timing cover and valve cover gasket leaks also appear. One report is fire-related, and several owners call the oil near the exhaust manifold a fire risk.
Electrical381 crash
The touchscreen registers phantom inputs, the widely reported "ghost touch" fault. It changes stations, skips songs, raises the volume, places phone calls, and drops CarPlay without any input. Some screens freeze or reboot while driving. Dealer screen repairs are quoted at roughly $500 to $1,000, and some owners doubt they work. A smaller group reports sudden power loss or rough running at highway speed with dash lights going out, plus limp mode with radar and smart brake malfunction messages. One filing is crash-related, and one fire-related report starts near a passenger door speaker.
Transmission252 crashes
Cracked cylinder heads dominate here too. Oil leaks onto the exhaust manifold and engine bay, and the only warning is often a burning smell, smoke, or a low-oil light. Reported mileages run from about 30,000 to 67,000. A separate pattern is transmission failure well under 30,000 miles, where the car stops moving or shuts down on the highway and needs a full transmission. Two crash reports, each with an injury, describe a parked car rolling away and striking its owner. Stalling and limp mode at freeway speed also appear.
Wipers and visibility9No crashes
Windshields crack and chip easily, including stress cracks with no sign of impact, and some owners report repeat replacements. Auto-folding side mirrors stop opening fully, cutting rear visibility, and dealers often decline the fix outside warranty even though a service bulletin exists. Other reports include wind whistling through the windshield at high speed, a glass sunroof bursting at highway speed, wiper arms installed on the wrong sides, and automatic emergency braking that activates with no hazard ahead.
Body and structure6No crashes
Glass sunroofs shatter suddenly with a loud bang while driving, and one owner was cut near the eye by falling glass. Wind noise is the most common complaint here: squeaks and whistles from the front doors and mirror area at highway speeds, worse in crosswinds. Soul Red paint chips down to the primer on the hood within the first months of ownership. The driver-side mirror glass can vibrate badly at speed, and dealers have been unable to fix it.
Acceleration and cruise control6No crashes
The car slows or brakes on its own. Radar cruise control cuts speed sharply in curves even with no car ahead, and in one case braked hard while passing a truck at highway speed. Other cars refuse to accelerate past about 30 mph when merging, often on the first drive of the day alongside a radar visibility warning. An overheating fault can limit the car to 20 mph in traffic. One report describes unintended acceleration from a stop. Dealers often cannot reproduce these faults.
Airbags51 crash
The airbag warning light comes on or blinks while driving, sometimes clearing by itself without a diagnosis. In one case the fault traced to a defective driver airbag. The passenger airbag status light can stay on with the seat empty, and a dealer warranty fix for dirty seat wiring contacts did not last. One crash report says the airbag did not deploy during a low-speed parking-lot collision. Owners report diagnostic charges when no recall applies.
Seats21 crash
Only two complaints exist, so no clear pattern is visible. In one rear-end crash with two injuries, the driver's headrest tore completely out of the seat and gave no neck support on impact. The other report describes the rear seatback behind the driver rattling and failing to lock tight when a passenger sits there. Both point to seat hardware that may not stay secure under load.
In owners' own words

Vehicle has 40k after a oil change noticed oil spots on pavement took it back to the garage that did the task, was told that the leak was near cylinder #2. Called Mazda customer service and was informed that my warranty expired in May of 2024. my mechanic called Mazda parts to get the price of cylinder head and was told that they had a run on cylinder heads due to defective heads coming from the Factory, SHOULD BE A RECALL ON THE MAZDA.
Filed with NHTSA, December 2024
My vehicle has 64k miles and has had regular maintenance - oil changes, etc. it has recently developed an oil leak. I took it to the dealer today & they said the cylinder head and gasket needs to be replaced. My car has not overheating or even run warm. I understand there are 2019 CX-5S that have had a casting issue with cylinder heads. I feel sure that’s what the issue is here yet they want almost $6k to repair my vehicle!

Mazda infotainment system experiences ghost touching. It would operate on its own and exit applications like navigation on its own. Mazda is aware of the issue but won’t issue a recall. This can be a safety hazard when the system exits out of navigation in the middle of nowhere. The system would also make calls on its own which would cause a panic to the driver who is distracted trying to end a call they never placed.
Filed with NHTSA, August 2024
The vehicle is experiencing a “ghost touch” malfunction within the infotainment system, wherein the touchscreen registers unintended inputs. As a result, the system intermittently initiates phone calls, changes radio stations, and alters other settings without driver interaction. This erratic behavior is highly distracting and presents a potential safety concern while the vehicle is in operation.

Just got diagnosed with cracked cylinder head. After looking on social media, it appears this is a thing for the model years 2018 and 2019. Bad casting? Anyway I believe this should be a voluntary recall to correct such a flawed engine. I bought this new from a Mazda dealership and kept it up to date with service only through the dealer. The 60 month/60,000 mile drive train warranty ran out last July. However I only have 50,000 miles on the car...babied.

Car will whine and jerk when accelerating. Car suddenly stopped engaging in gear after it was warm. Dealer states it has internal transmission malfunction at 64k miles. Prior to the car breaking down the vehicle was taken to the dealer for a diagnostic on 12/27/23 and concerns with the whining and jerking when driving were expressed. Dealer reports that the transmission was “operating as designed”.

Windshield cracks too easy on 2019 Mazda CX-5. The car is 2019 and has already had 7 separate incidents (Crack and or Chip). Mazda knows of the problem and there are many Mazda customers that have reported problems with the integrity of the windshield. It's very concerning because it could be a safety issue if the windshield cracks so easy especially with all the objects and debris on the road that bigger vehicles like trucks kick up. I don't feel safe.

Car will slam on brakes even if car is in opposite lane farther away. We have received sooo many chips amd cracks on windshield with 2 weeks. We purchased used and was informed windshield was replaced once already.

Where the 2019 fits in the CX-5's history
Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.
The 2019 is the third model year of the CX-5's second generation (2017–2025).
Mazda updated the CX-5 for 2022, so a 2019 does not have those changes.
What changed for 2022 (not on a 2019)
- Restyled bumpers
- Updated headlights and tail lights
- Revised suspension
