These checks are specific to this model year. For tires, body panels, fluids, and the other basics every used car needs, use the general inspection guide.

Which Equinox is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2019 Chevrolet Equinox. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
1.5L 4-cylGasAWD, FWD27–28 mpg
2.0L 4-cylGasAWD, FWD24–25 mpg
1.6L 4-cylDieselAWD, FWD32 mpg
  • The 2019 Chevrolet Equinox was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Equinox that averages well under the EPA 24 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

  • Brake vacuum pump failure

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2019 Chevrolet Equinox, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Brakes566 crashes

The brake pedal turns rock hard and the car will not stop, usually because the brake booster vacuum pump fails. It often happens with no warning light, at highway speed or in traffic. Several reports end in rear-end crashes or hitting walls, and some failures recur after replacement. Owners note that mechanics call it common and that no recall covers it. Some owners say the failed pump destroyed the engine. Reported failures range from 39,000 to 107,310 miles. Other reports describe false hard braking on cruise control and rear brakes dragging after long drives.

  • Engine45No crashes

A loud pop, then a check engine light and a reduced power message. The charge air cooler tube or its clip comes off the throttle body under acceleration, often on freeways or climbing hills, and the car may slow sharply in traffic. Most cases appear in the first few thousand miles. Repeat failures after dealer repairs are common, and backordered parts kept some cars in the shop for weeks. Less common reports include turbo replacements, EVAP leaks with fuel smell in the cabin, timing chain engine failure, and two fires.

  • Electrical341 crash

Electronics act on their own. The infotainment screen blanks and reboots, radio volume changes, mirrors move, and the sunroof or power liftgate opens and closes unprompted. More serious reports describe the whole car shutting off while driving, stalling with warning codes, and power brake assist failing after an auto stop. Door lock actuators fail and the tire pressure monitoring system stops working. Water leaking onto the rear fuse panel is also reported. One car caught fire after hitting a deer, and some vacuum pump failures are filed here.

  • Transmission33No crashes

The car shows a "Shift to Park" error while already in park, then will not turn off or restart and drains the battery. Owners say the dealer repair is costly and not covered. Auto start/stop is another theme: the engine fails to restart at intersections, or the car lurches as it restarts. Other reports describe hesitation from a stop, stalling, transmission failure, a faulty transmission control module, oil leaks between engine and transmission, and reduced power mode. One fire is reported.

  • Fuel system23No crashes

Fuel leaks from the top of the tank and fuel smells through the vents are the main patterns. Some leaks appear only with a full tank in cold weather. High pressure fuel pump and fuel line failures leave the car unable to accelerate or stalling, and one report describes a snapped pump and leaking line. Owners also report the gauge never reading full, gas pumps shutting off during refueling, repeated EVAP codes, and shaking with sudden shutoff at stops. Several owners point to a prior recall.

The fuel tank leaks or its seam fails, causing fuel odor or fuel dripping near the tank. One car caught fire underneath at highway speed, and the owner traced it to the tank. Several owners link their problem to recall campaign 19V667000, but their VINs were not included. Leaks are reported at 89,000 and 229,000 miles. Separate reports describe stalling with a fuel system warning light and a no-start with a check engine light.

  • Steering91 crash

After long stretches of straight highway driving, the wheel sticks and needs a tug to turn. Dealers often cannot reproduce it, and owners say it persists for tens of thousands of miles. Other reports describe the wheel jerking left or right on its own, pushing the car toward the shoulder or oncoming traffic, even after multiple repair visits. Warning messages about the system also appear after a weak battery or jump start. One crash report describes the engine revving with the foot on the brake.

  • Acceleration and cruise control91 crash

Power drops suddenly at highway speed, with a reduced power message and a check engine light, leaving the car slowing sharply in front of trucks. Adaptive cruise control brakes hard for no reason, sometimes when a car passes. Other reports describe stalling while slowing for lights, and one car stayed unrepaired through 7 dealer attempts. One crash report describes unintended acceleration while parking with the foot on the brake at about 15,000 miles.

  • Airbags87 crashes

In serious crashes, including a rollover and guard rail impacts, the front bags fail to deploy. These reports carry 5 injuries across 7 crash-related complaints. One owner reports non-deployment in three separate accidents. Another describes a deployed side bag catching fire and burning the driver. Two crash reports filed here actually describe brake failure and unintended acceleration rather than a restraint fault.

In owners' own words

Brakes
I was driving brake pedal went causing me to use emergency brake to stop. Took and got it diagnosed. The brake vacuum went out. The repair bill was $680 that have to pay tomorrow 6-19. I had someone in my car that I was transporting. This could end very card if I was an experienced CDL driver. My car 2019 Chevy Equinox only has 107,310 miles. I am so frustrated this is not on the recall list for the same problem other GM owners were having

Brakes
I was driving on the freeway way and during rush hour at 65 miles per hour the brakes completely stoppped working the peddle wouldn’t press I had to swerve to avoid an accident and slowly exited the freeway when it was safe to coast over from the number one lane to the exit. The vacuum pump failed which exploded inside my engine which in turn makes the engine stop functioning and destroys the whole engine with out warning

Engine
2 nights ago, my engine light came on. I purchased a code reader today so see what may be wrong, and code P0299, popped up. I’ve reviewed and saw there’s no known recall on the issue but there’s a known Technical Service Bulletin (TSB). In a Facebook group I saw, it says that some people have replaced and code P0299 is still populating. I’m buying this vehicle and I have barely had 2 years now and wanted it to last.

Electrical
The car has constantly been stalling. The engine light comes on and goes off. These lights has come back on. This has been a reoccurring issue since the car was purchased in 2019. I just got the battery fixed this tear from them saying it was the battery. GM keeps offering me $2500 dollars but saying if I take it I can’t take action against them. That further let’s me know that they know something is wrong with the car.

Electrical
LCD screen as part of the infotainment system blanks out then repeatedly restarts. This goes for the entire drive. The GPS is not picking up the correct temperature and reports in Celsius not Fahrenheit. I'm not able to use any of the infotainment features including not being able to use the phone feature. Also the radio volume increases and decreases on its own. All of this is very distracting as I drive.

Transmission
While traveling a message appear "power reduced" a noise was heard like whistle (air whooshing). The time Car was started the engine light was on. The car was serviced by GM/Chevrolet dealership service. They found water in the spare tire compartment, but didn't not agree that it was the cause of malfunction. The asked if the car had been in a flood. I did my own research and found that this water leak problem is a known issue in litigation.

Filed with NHTSA, September 2023

Transmission
Vehicle runs with reduced engine power. Was initially told the turbo needed cleaned, and it continued to happen. Then was told it needed to be replaced. The final result is that the tube that connects to the turbo keeps falling off. Being told there is no fix, and no recall, we just need to keep putting it back on when it pops off.

Where the 2019 fits in the Equinox's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2019 is the second model year of the Equinox's third generation (2018–2024).

Chevrolet updated the Equinox for 2022, so a 2019 does not have those changes.

What changed for 2022 (not on a 2019)

  • New front grille and redesigned headlamps
  • Restyled lower fascia and tail lamps
  • Wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay

Recalls to confirm (4)

Recall repairs are free at any Chevrolet dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.
