Reported on other Murano years with the same design

These years share the 2018's design and most of its parts, so their problems are the ones to look for on this car too.

2019 Murano

39 owner complaints
  • Automatic emergency braking 7
  • Airbags 5
  • Acceleration and cruise control 4

Worth adding to your 2018 checks

  • Drive through a parking garage and on an empty road at 30 to 45 mph, and watch for false automatic braking.
  • Watch the dash for an AEB warning light or malfunction message that comes on during the test drive.
  • Look for moisture or fogging inside both headlight housings. A damaged unit means replacing the whole sealed assembly.

Which Murano is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2018 Nissan Murano. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating

  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Murano that averages well under the EPA 24 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2018 Nissan Murano, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical4No crashes

A parked, unattended vehicle catching fire and burning completely is the most serious report here. Another describes the traction control warning flashing on and off on dry roads, followed by the engine stalling while driving. That is a loss-of-power risk in traffic. The remaining filings come from a single owner at about 93,500 miles. They list problems that began after dealer service: transmission jerking, RPM surging, power loss at highway speed and a flickering, resetting dashboard. With so few reports, no clear mileage pattern shows.

  • Automatic emergency braking2No crashes

The forward collision warning light comes on while driving, and the system shuts itself off, sometimes within 10 miles. Restarting the car clears the light for a while, but the warning returns and the system disables again. Adaptive cruise control stops working whenever the light is on, and drivers must reset it after the light goes out. Both reports describe an ongoing, intermittent fault rather than a single failure. Neither mentions false braking or a crash.

  • Lane keeping2No crashes

Neither report in this category actually describes the lane departure system. One describes the transmission shuddering at low speeds and failing to engage, which makes freeway driving feel unsafe. The other starts with an automatic emergency braking warning light. A dealer traced it to the ABS actuator, and more warning lights, including ABS, appeared after the visit. The replacement part was on back order, with a long line of customers waiting. Cruise control stays disabled until the repair is done, so the main problem is a parts shortage.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Murano owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
My car several times while driving randomly had the traction control loss light pop up randomly (dry conditions) several times through a 45 minute drive. Around the 35 minute mark it popped up again, and my car completely stalled out. My VIN is allegedly not apart of one of their recalls but it appears as if it’s the exact same issue many others had and that it should have been included with said recall.

Filed with NHTSA, November 2025

Electrical
Car was parked for two hours in a private parking space. Onlooker reported seeing it on fire and called 911. Car was completely destroyed by fire. Insurance company reported it was related to this recall.

Filed with NHTSA, July 2025

Automatic emergency braking
The FCW turns off within 10 miles of driving. The FCW light clears up if the vehicle is shut off and restarted. However FCW warning comes back up and the FCW system is disabled.

Filed with NHTSA, October 2025

Automatic emergency braking
Forward collision warning light comes on and off while driving. When the light comes on the cruise control will not work and when the light goes off I need to reset the cruise control. This started about two months ago.

Where the 2018 fits in the Murano's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2018 is the fourth model year of the Murano's third generation (2015–2024).

Nissan updated the Murano for 2020, so a 2018 does not have those changes.

What changed for 2020 (not on a 2018)

  • Updated front and rear fascias
  • New wheel design
  • Nissan Safety Shield 360 as standard for SV and SL models
