Which Range Rover Sport is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2024 Land Rover Range Rover Sport. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
3.0L 6-cyl4WD21 mpg
4.4L 8-cyl4WD19 mpg
  • The 2024 Land Rover Range Rover Sport was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Range Rover Sport that averages well under the EPA 19 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2024 Land Rover Range Rover Sport, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical9No crashes

The car shuts down while driving. Most reports start with an "Electrical fault detected" warning. The 12-volt battery then drains and the car loses all power, often at highway speed. Power steering and brakes go with it. The car may not shift into neutral or restart, so it has to be towed. Dealers usually blame the 48-volt to 12-volt DC/DC converter, and some replacement converters fail again. Other reports describe windshield leaks damaging wiring, a black main screen at startup, and a driver display that dims until it can't be read at dusk.

  • Steering6No crashes

Power steering cuts out, usually as part of a wider electrical shutdown. Drivers describe an electrical fault warning, then the transmission dropping into neutral, every dash light coming on, and the steering going heavy before the car dies. Dealers usually trace it to a failed DC/DC converter, and replacement parts are reported as backordered. Other filings describe a steering wheel locked at startup and a screen blackout followed by a stall. One filing reports a fire with no warning beforehand. Another concerns a Defender, not this model.

  • Airbags5No crashes

None of these filings describes an air bag failing. Most are about waiting for an air bag repair that dealers can't do because the parts aren't available. Owners report waiting months with no timeline, and some say dealers refused them a loaner car. Several of these filings name the Range Rover Evoque, not the Sport. One unrelated filing lists other faults after more than 30 days in the shop: lane keep assist making sudden steering inputs at highway speed, an infotainment system that crashes and takes out the backup camera, and wind noise.

  • Transmission42 crashes

Two crash reports with injuries describe the car losing all power at highway speed and stopping in live traffic. They blame resets of the powertrain and fuel pump control modules. Both read as broad petitions covering many Jaguar Land Rover models, not just this one. The reports specific to this model involve early failures. One describes a two-wheel-drive-only message and traction warning light at about 1,500 miles. Another describes a loose transfer case connection causing shudder and grinding at 5,700 miles. Back-ordered parts leave cars undrivable while they wait.

  • Wipers and visibility4No crashes

Windshields crack again and again. One owner reports a sixth windshield in just over a year. One moonroof is reported to have shattered without any impact. Wipers are the other repeat complaint. Blades and arms get replaced several times without fixing streaking in the rain, and washer fluid gets left in the driver's line of sight on salty winter roads. In these reports, dealers call the wiper behavior a design issue and have not fixed it.

  • Brakes21 crash

Rear brake pads wear out early. Owners report needing new pads at roughly 10-15k miles, even with gentle driving, and some have been told the work isn't covered under warranty. A crash report with one injury describes the brake pedal sinking to the floor and not responding during slow turns into a parking space. That filing names a long-wheelbase Range Rover, not the Sport.

  • Engine2No crashes

Sudden power loss and fire are the two failures reported here, both with little warning. One filing describes an overheating warning followed by a fire while driving that totaled the car. Another describes a total loss of power at 65 mph on the highway, with the accelerator no longer responding, at about 10,196 miles. Both cars were left disabled. Each failure carries a serious crash or fire risk.

  • Seat belts2No crashes

One rear seat belt is reported as unstitched and not attached to the frame, so it would not hold anyone in a crash. The other filing is about the power-folding second-row seat. It trapped a person's arm and would not retract, and police and EMS had to lift the seat to free them. The injury was bruising, and the car had about 9,600 miles on it.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Range Rover Sport owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
Vehichle completely shut off while driving in middle of road. All power was cut to vehicle, luckily I had foot on the break at the time at a stop light. Was dead in the intersection, required a tow to dealership. The dealer confirmed it was a DC/DC electrical failure that had my mild hybrid engine not working. Basically communication with the gas engine stopped and vehicle died after draining the battery.

Filed with NHTSA, February 2026

Electrical
Near dusk, the driver display (speedometer, tachometer, fuel gauge , etc.) automatically dimes to night mode and becomes unreadable. Turning the rheostat controlling display brightness does nothing. Very dangerous. Display should only go to night mode when conditions are actually dark.

Filed with NHTSA, November 2024

Steering
Yes, my car caught fire. It's at an impound currently. My clothes caught fire when I tried putting it out. The car could have been parked in my garage or been in NYC, with a full tank of gas, that would have caused serious damage. My insurance company is sending an investigator to look into it today. No, warning lamps, messages or symptoms.

Filed with NHTSA, January 2026

Steering
I was ready to leave for work and started the car. The steering wheel was locked and would not turn left or right. The car could be put in gear but, the steering wheel not move. I turned the car off several times and nothing helped. Hopefully, this will not happen while driving. Had to drive my other car to work.

Filed with NHTSA, November 2023

Airbags
Open safety recall since July 2025, and now in February 2026, 7 months later, no remedy nor parts exist to fix the problem, with no anticipated timeline.
