Which XC90 is it?

  • The 2024 Volvo XC90 was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A XC90 that averages well under the EPA 24 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2024 Volvo XC90, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical101 crash

Screens and sounds cut out without warning. Reports describe the instrument cluster and center display going black, sometimes with a "Critical Error - Pull Over When Safe" message. All audio can also drop out, including turn signal clicks, blind spot alerts and parking tones. Some cars shut off while driving or will not start, and one no-start happened at 700 miles. Other reports mention airbag warnings, surging and false obstacle detection that brakes or steers the car. One crash followed a cluster and turn signal failure. Repeat dealer visits often fail to fix it.

  • Transmission51 crash

The car can roll after the driver presses the P button. Several reports say park takes two or three presses, or extra pressure, before it engages. In another report the car moved a few seconds after the button was pushed. One crash is linked to the car rolling while passengers got out. Other complaints describe the car dying in traffic and failing to restart, with no manual way to shift into neutral. The center display can also freeze, which locks the drive mode until the car is restarted.

  • Backup camera3No crashes

While reversing, the rear camera image goes blank, freezes or shows "Camera Not Available." The audible back over alarm can also stay silent. A frozen feed can leave the driver backing up blind for several feet. The reports put these failures early, at 1,000 and 5,500 miles. Dealers could not reproduce the fault in one case. In another, a software update did not stop a later freeze. One owner was put on a dealer waitlist because the repair part was not available.

  • Brakes21 crash

Pressing the P button does not always set the parking brake. When it fails, the car keeps rolling once the driver lets off the brake pedal. A firmer, more deliberate press usually engages it. One crash with an injury involved a car rolling backward as the driver got out. The open door knocked the driver down, and the car went on to hit another vehicle and a fence. Some owners now switch the car off instead of using the P button, which they say sets the parking brake every time.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints XC90 owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
The trunk fails to open via kick correctly and then has closed in the midst of using the trunk space. It has not performed the “kick to close” function since purchasing the vehicle. We have two young children and this has brought a scare a few times. We love our Volvos but this has been our only concern.

Filed with NHTSA, January 2026

Electrical
Installation of GeoTab Telematics devices on entire fleet of 2024 Volvos (regardless of model) resulted in sporadic, unplanned and random acceleration, engine revving, transmission shifting, switching from electric (hybrid mode) to gas mode. Vehicle lurches and surges.

Filed with NHTSA, April 2024

Transmission
After pushing "P" button to shift into park, the car moves slightly several seconds after the button is pushed. This can be a hazard if someone opens to door and the car then moves.
