  • The 2019 Land Rover Range Rover Sport was sold in five versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Range Rover Sport that averages well under the EPA 19 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2019 Land Rover Range Rover Sport, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical23No crashes

Screens go black or freeze, taking climate control, defrost, radio, and Bluetooth with them. Some owners say the display stays dark after startup and the engine shuts off at stops. Dealers often cannot reproduce the fault and apply software updates instead. Key fobs go unrecognized, so the car will not unlock or start, and some doors will not lock. Window motors fail with the glass stuck open. Water leaking past a failed windshield seal damages the airbag control module and audio amplifier. Sudden shutdowns while driving can leave the car stranded in traffic.

  • Engine13No crashes

Coolant loss and overheating lead this group. Owners describe low-coolant warnings that keep coming back, coolant smell through the vents, and leaks at crossover pipes, thermostat housings, and plastic coolant parts near the turbo. Repeat repairs often fail, and some reports end in engine or turbo failure paid for out of pocket. Other filings cite timing chain faults, a damaged crank, sudden shutoff while driving, brief stalls on acceleration, and collapsed motor mounts. One filing reports an engine fire while parked and off, but it describes a different Land Rover model.

  • Transmission102 crashes

The most serious pattern is rollaway after shifting into Park. Drivers turn the rotary dial to Park and step out, and the vehicle rolls in reverse. People get knocked down and dragged, and two reports describe crashes with injuries. In one case the rollaways kept happening after the dealer replaced the gear shifter. Other filings describe acceleration lag below 8 mph and when turning that software updates do not fix. Owners also report check engine lights with shaking and sudden shutoff, plus camshaft and variable cam timing faults.

  • Body and structure6No crashes

Glass and trim fail without warning. Owners report the inner sunroof panel shattering at highway speed, the liftgate spoiler coming off in high wind, and headliner adhesive failing so the headliner drops onto the driver. Rear door latches fail and doors open while the car is moving, sometimes without setting off the open-door warning. Heavy rain comes in through the windshield and roof. One filing reports a fire, with an injury, after coolant and check engine warnings, but it describes a different Land Rover model.

  • Door latches and locks5No crashes

Door latches fail to lock or latch fully. A door can look closed and then swing open while driving or in a parking lot. Owners report all four doors refusing to lock or unlock, replacement latches failing again soon after repair, and paying for latch work themselves. In one case a faulty door latch switch also disabled the mirror and rear camera controls. A failed hood release cable leaves the hood stuck shut. Window regulators fail more than once in the same car.

  • Acceleration and cruise control42 crashes

The vehicle moves in reverse when the driver opens the door to step out. Both crash reports describe the door being torn off against a garage and the SUV backing into a neighbor's structure, and both list an injury. Other filings describe a long hesitation when pulling away from a stop or from low speed, so drivers have to floor the throttle. Another reports loss of power with check engine and coolant warnings, starting around 6,000 miles, that came back after spark plug work.

  • Exterior lights3No crashes

The third brake light on the rear spoiler is held on only by friction clips. It can detach at highway speed and become a hazard for traffic behind. Headlight failures also appear, including a blown bulb and a built-in LED daytime running light that stops working entirely. For the LED failure, the dealer said the only fix is a full headlight unit costing over $6,000. Reports are few, but that repair bill is steep.

  • Steering3No crashes

Heavy, hard-to-turn handling arrives suddenly, with no noise or warning light, and the wheel takes great effort to turn. In the one detailed case, the dealer found a failed steering gear assembly, described as a $5,000 part. Other filings describe every dashboard warning light coming on while driving, with one car sitting at the dealer for almost 9 weeks without a fix. Another reports the car blacking out and stalling after a clicking sound on the right side.

In owners' own words

Electrical
I was driving on the highway during heavy rain and there was a huge leak coming through the window in the backseat started dripping all over the seat and all over the seatbelts spreading above head into the front. I immediately pulled over because it scared me. I was scared it was going to continual leaking into the front steering and airbags

Electrical
Front Passenger Daytime Running Light Chip Failure Range Rover Velar Forums have THOUSANDS of this exact issue. Land Rover has ceased all communications with me regarding this issue, including the executive office.

Filed with NHTSA, December 2025

Engine
Saw a recall for coolant lines on other land rover models but they have the same engine as my model. Land rover says my vin is not covered but it is doing exactly the same thing as the recalled models. I am losing coolant and can smell it through the vents into the cabin. I believe the issue extends beyond the initial models they stated. I believe it is a common issue with these particular engines. The 5.0L and the 3.0L.

Filed with NHTSA, January 2025

Engine
Both the Cooling elbow and manifold connecting to the engine block were disintegrating causing severe leaks on both the elbow and manifold connections. This is a well known recall for Range Rover Velars that was never addressed on my vehicle. Multiple dealers refused to address the issue forcing me to perform the repairs myself. Transmission
Placed car into park by moving gare dial from drive to Park. Got out of car and car started moving back and I was knocked down by the door and dragged by the car on the driveway. Suffered torn shin with 7 stiches to muscle and 14 stiches, broken foot and lacreations all over the back. 13 year old in the car pushed the off button to turn car off.

The camshaft is broken allong with the nit which causes our car to shut off. This defect has ben corrected on other autos like mine but my vin has not been recalled yet
