Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2018 Land Rover Range Rover Sport, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Engine32No crashes

Coolant pipes split at the seam with no prior leak. Coolant pours out and a stop-engine overheating warning appears, often at highway speed. Plastic crossover pipes and quick connects near the supercharger come up again and again, and some owners see the same pipe fail after replacement. Reported failures cluster between 42,651 and 69,908 miles. Overheating can cut engine power in fast traffic, and several cases end in a full engine replacement. Separate reports describe a cracked intake valve and a failed pulley, both causing sudden power loss.

A coolant warning and a fluctuating temperature gauge are traced to a faulty coolant outlet pipe, reported at 70,000 miles. In another report, the car slows on its own at highway speed with a rattle underneath. The cause is a failed rod bearing at 36,000 miles, and the engine needs replacing. Most of the other complaints here name the Velar, Evoque or Discovery. They describe coolant leaks, a turbo failure, a fuel leak and timing chain faults.

  • Electrical291 crash

Screens freeze or go black, and drivers lose climate, radio, phone and backup camera controls with them. The lower screen module drops out repeatedly. Some owners report this within days of purchase, or at 4,500 miles after several dealer visits and software updates. The backup camera may not appear in reverse or may lag badly. Some reports filed here actually describe coolant pipes splitting and engines failing. One fire follows a sudden loss of power at highway speed. One crash involves the dial shifter leaving park with the driver out of the car.

  • Transmission253 crashes

The car leaves park by itself and rolls or reverses while the driver door is open and the driver is getting out. These rotary dial reports include a crash into a building with 2 injuries. A second pattern is a 1 to 2 second delay when pulling away from a stop or low speed, followed by a sudden jolt, which is risky when turning into traffic. Other reports cover CV axle noise in turns, a failed power transfer unit, gearbox faults that block shifting, and overheating that ends in engine replacement.

  • Body and structure9No crashes

Power-closing doors and tailgates keep closing when something is in the way. One soft-close door crushed a thumb, and a power tailgate hit a person on the head and caused a concussion. Front bumpers and fenders crack near the headlamps without any impact, and owners say they were told to pay for the repair. Several reports in this category concern other Land Rover models, including roof panels coming off on the highway, a door opening at 40 mph, and water leaking through the headliner.

  • Wipers and visibility8No crashes

Rain leaks in along the top of the windshield and soaks the headliner, dash, seats and electronics. Owners also report fogging and mold. Most of these leak reports concern the Discovery, not this model, so they say little about it. The other complaints describe heavy window fogging in cold weather. The defroster can take 10 to 30 minutes or never clear the side glass, which blocks the view for lane changes.

  • Steering61 crash

Power steering assist cuts out suddenly. The wheel becomes nearly impossible to turn or locks for a few seconds mid-turn, and messages warn of reduced steering and unavailable emergency braking. In one case, loss of assist came back after a wiring harness was replaced. One crash report describes the car pulling right when leaving a driveway, which a dealer blamed on a damaged steering box. Grinding and squealing during slow turns also appear. One report filed here describes coolant pipes rupturing under the supercharger at 47,000 miles.

  • Acceleration and cruise control61 crash

The throttle lags 1 to 2 seconds when pulling away from a stop, and then the car lurches forward. Drivers say this leaves them exposed when pulling into traffic. Owners report dealers acknowledging the complaint but not fixing it, and it shows up even on new cars. Other reports describe sudden loss of acceleration at highway speeds after 50,000 miles, limp mode and repeated check engine lights. The one crash here, a total brake failure, involves a Discovery Sport.

  • Airbags31 crash

The airbag warning light keeps coming back on. Owners trace it to a wiring harness under the driver's seat. Dealer repairs last six to eight months before the light returns. One crash report with 2 injuries says the airbags did not deploy in a 45 mph frontal collision, and police and insurance reports confirm it. No warning lights appeared beforehand.

Engine
Driving and suddenly got "engine overheating low coolant stop engine immediately" warning message on instrument cluster. Pulled over and found coolant pouring out of front of engine. There was no warning or signs of prior coolant leakage before this incident. Happened suddenly without warning. Repair shop found coolant pipe assembly part number LR100352 split at seam. This a repeat of same failure dated 6/22/2021 @42651 miles complaint # 11630060

Low coolant warning came on. Topped off coolant with no leak visible under vehicle. Warning came back a week later. And leak was now visible. Electrical
The backup camera fails to display any image on the screen, significantly impacting my visibility while reversing. This issue occurred unexpectedly. Upon contacting the dealer, I was informed there is an active recall (24V023) related to this problem, but my VIN is not included. I believe my vehicle is also affected by the same recall. For reference, Land Rover’s internal recall number for this issue is N778.

Electrical
When I’m driving my high beams automatically come on and blind the drivets ahead of me. They come on by themselves and it’s not even dark enough for them to be on. It happens when I’m on the freeway going to work. This has happened more than once. It’s happened four times already and it worries me cause I don’t want someone to think I’m flicking my high beams at them!!!

Filed with NHTSA, December 2025

Transmission
2018 Range Rover Velar started leaking coolant in Nov 2024. Car was diagnosed by the Land Rover dealership as a coolant inlet pipe leak. Claim has been submitted to Land Rover as this is a known ongoing issue with this model as well as others. Awaiting decision. Dealership quoted nearly $3000 to correct issue.

Filed with NHTSA, February 2025

Body and structure
Noticed a random crack appear on passenger front fender near head lamp. This appeared overnight while car was parked inside garage. Don’t know if the crack will grow and if so, how fast it will grow causing safety hazard with a potentially serious fender damage while driving on the highway. Aware of technical bulletin for this problem LTB00738NAS4 Land Rover said I have to pay for new bumper referenced in bulletin.

Filed with NHTSA, November 2023

Body and structure
leaking water into the interior through headliner. researched online and multiple land rover discovery owners are having the same issues. Extremely dangerous while driving.
