Which Range Rover Sport is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Sport. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 5.0L 8-cylGas | 4WD | 19 mpg |
| 3.0L 6-cylDiesel | 4WD | 24 mpg |
| 3.0L 6-cylHybrid | 4WD | 21 mpg |
| 2.0L 4-cylPlug-in hybrid | 4WD | 480 mi range |
- The 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Sport was sold in four versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Range Rover Sport that averages well under the EPA 19 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Coolant leaks
37,000–39,000 miles
Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Sport, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Electrical301 crash
The car suddenly loses all power while driving, often right after a "Charging System Fault" or low battery warning. Power steering, brake assist, lights, and even the hazard lights can cut out, sometimes at highway speed. Dealers have confirmed failed DC/DC converters in several cases. Other reports describe stalling at stops with a message to engage a gear, and touchscreens that go black and take climate and drive mode controls with them. Water leaking from the sunroof is blamed for some electrical faults. One crash report says the airbags did not deploy and the SOS call failed.
Transmission213 crashes
The vehicle lurches or jerks forward while coming to a stop, and the engine revs or surges on its own. Owners also describe stalls at stops with a message to select a gear, a gear selector that stops responding, and sudden loss of brake assist alongside stability control warnings. Two crash reports involve the car moving on its own after being put in Park or while reversing, and both caused injuries. Dealers often cannot reproduce the problem. Some cars get a new gear shift module. A failed 48V DC/DC converter cuts all power, and one owner reports the part is backordered. Two fires are reported.
Suspension11No crashes
The front end grinds or crunches over bumps and dips, mostly under 15 mph and during slow turns. Dealers replace front control arms, sometimes more than once, and in one case drain fluid from the bushings instead of fixing them. One owner reports corroded hydraulic lines in the Active Cornering Enhancement system, with a $10,000 repair quote. Another says a wheel worked loose enough to rub the brake caliper, leaving the car undriveable. Electrical problems also show up here: repeated alternator failures before 100,000 miles, and a cargo-area fire at 33,200 miles that totaled the vehicle.
Engine10No crashes
Coolant leaks keep coming back, from outlet pipes, auxiliary coolant pipes, the rear coolant manifold, and the auxiliary radiator. Owners blame the plastic coolant parts, and one car broke down on the road after losing its coolant. Other reports describe heavy oil use, with a critical oil warning and the engine shutting off at 70 mph. Stalls at stops and shutdowns while running also appear, along with oil leaks on a nearly new car. Major failures are reported too: a camshaft failure at 75,000 miles and an engine that seized just under 90k miles, past warranty.
Steering62 crashes
The vehicle jerks or steers left or right without warning, sometimes into the next lane, so the driver has to correct hard. Owners also report steering that stays off-center after an alignment and lane keeping assist that barely works. One complaint raises cracking steering knuckles. Another says blind spot assist has to be checked constantly. A few filings mix in hesitation and stalling when pulling away. This small group of 6 complaints includes 2 crash reports and 5 injuries.
Wipers and visibility51 crash
Water gets into the cabin through a failed windshield seal and drips onto the front passenger floor or the electronics in the center of the dash. One leak showed up at 46,000 miles. In one case the windshield could be pushed partly loose by hand. Some leaks come back months after a dealer fixes the seal, and cost keeps some owners from repairing it. A separate crash report describes lines in the glass that make a shimmering, rainbow-like glare in sunlight and oncoming headlights.
Airbags41 crash
The airbag warning light comes on randomly during some drives and goes off after a restart. Some owners buy the car with the light already on. Another report describes a passenger airbag sensor that does not work. In one side-impact crash, the side airbag deployment left the driver with a chemical burn, smoke filled the cabin, and the doors would not unlock until rescuers arrived.
Body and structure41 crash
Exterior parts come off at highway speed. Reports include a rear spoiler that detached after 4 of its 5 fasteners failed, and roof side rails that flew off on the freeway with no warning. The carbon fiber hood also peels, and one owner says the manufacturer inspected it and refused to fix it. One crash report filed here describes sudden unintended acceleration in reverse and then forward in a parking lot.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Range Rover Sport owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
Engine complete shuts down when idling (I.e., at stop lights) in extreme temperatures. Requires vehicle to be turned off, wait a minute or two, restart vehicle. Has happened 4 times at outdoor temperatures of 110-120 degrees. Dealership service claims that they cannot replicate the problem and states that there is nothing in the computer log to show any errors. So far this has not happened on a highway, only local streets.

Front parking aid sensors do not alert me to objects in front of me when parking forward. I have to first backup two feet to get it to work, then it picks it up once I put in forward motion again. The dealer stated that they have no recalls for this problem even though my vehicle is in warranty.
Filed with NHTSA, April 2024
Car stopped suddenly without warning while driving on interstate on 2 occasions. Vehicle had 16K miles and was serviced by dealer as required. After weeks of investigation, it was determined that the water pump was defective. Took 15 minutes to restart the vehicle while sitting on side of highway.
Filed with NHTSA, April 2025
Faulty code P0A7B and P0A1F for the Battery Energy Control Module BECM was diagnosed. Check engine light appeared and then car shut off at a light when attempting to press accelerator. Was told by dealer the part needed replacement instead of just a software update. A recall was shown in general for my year and type but not specifically for my vehicle. My vehicle should be included with this recall to replace the component.

Engine seized (failed) just under 90k miles. I bought this car used in 2021 with only 7k miles on the vehicle and I've had it serviced as recommended by the manufacturer. The engine failed without warning and left me owing $23k on a useless vehicle. The manufacturers warranty was expired, so I'm left holding the bag and paying for a useless vehicle to remain in my garage until the loan is paid off in another 3-years.
