Which Range Rover Sport is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2022 Land Rover Range Rover Sport. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 5.0L 8-cylGas | 4WD | 19 mpg |
| 3.0L 6-cylHybrid | 4WD | 21 mpg |
| 2.0L 4-cylPlug-in hybrid | 4WD | 480 mi range |
- The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover Sport was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Range Rover Sport that averages well under the EPA 19 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2022 Land Rover Range Rover Sport, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Electrical311 crash
Sudden power loss while driving is the dominant pattern. An "Electrical Fault Detected" or low-battery warning appears, then the battery drains, power steering quits, and the car coasts to a stop, sometimes in traffic or at an intersection. Dealers repeatedly diagnose a failed DC-DC converter after new batteries and alternators fail to help. Many reports describe the part on back order for a month or more. Other complaints cover false automatic emergency braking that caused an injury, a blank backup camera screen, and an ABS fault after a minor crash. Several excerpts involve other Land Rover models.
Wipers and visibility13No crashes
Windshields crack with no impact, often while parked, during a car wash, or on hot days. Cracks start at the top center, lower edge, or a corner and spread across the driver's view, sometimes through the safety camera area. Some owners report repeat replacements and dealers declining warranty coverage. Nearly every excerpt that names a vehicle describes a Defender, not a Range Rover Sport, so this pattern may not carry over directly. Reported cracks appear early, around 5,765 to 8,000 miles.
Transmission11No crashes
Unexpected shifts from Drive to Neutral at stops are the most common complaint, often after auto stop/start shuts the engine off. The car will not move until shifted to Park and back. Other reports describe coolant leaks, a burning smell, and smoke under the hood that dealers could not find, which one filing flags as a fire risk. DC-DC converter failure and highway power loss also appear. Many excerpts describe a Velar, Evoque, or Defender rather than this model.
Exterior lights7No crashes
Daytime running lights burn out, with one report at about 28,000 miles and others after a year or two. The fix is a full headlight replacement that owners say costs $3,000 to $5,000 out of warranty, and replacements can fail again or sit on back order. There is no dashboard warning when the lights go out. A separate complaint describes taillights shutting off when a bright light hits them. Every vehicle named in these excerpts is a Defender.
Engine6No crashes
Sudden shutdowns at speed dominate, with reports at 50 mph, 60 mph, and on a freeway. Some drivers get no warning, and one describes the wipers, headlights, and screen going dark with a stop/start fault message. One case ended in catastrophic failure at 60,000 miles, just past warranty, with no cause given. Another describes a drive belt failure at 7,151 miles blamed on a faulty tensioner, with coolant loss and charging warnings.
Two serious failures appear at higher mileage. One car would not start with no warning light, and the dealer found a failed CVVL gasket requiring replacement of the CVVL system, at about 46,000 miles. Another leaked coolant from the bottom plate at about 76,000 miles, triggering the low coolant warning even after a top-off. Neither owner reports a completed repair, and one was referred elsewhere by the manufacturer.
Steering5No crashes
Power steering fails at startup, usually with a "lane assist not available" message as the only warning. The wheel will not turn, though the car may still move forward and in reverse. Restarts sometimes help, and dealers have struggled to find a cause. One report links the steering lockup to repeated engine stalls at red lights. Another complaint filed here actually describes a Velar shifting into Neutral while changing lanes.
Airbags3No crashes
These complaints describe waiting for an airbag recall repair, not an airbag failure. Owners say dealers have no parts and no completion date, with one repair still pending after 112 days. One owner says a dealer could not access recall information at all. None of the owners reports an airbag failure. The excerpts name a Range Rover and an Evoque, not specifically this model.
Body and structure3No crashes
Driver-side A-pillar trim comes loose and falls off at highway speed. Owners report it happening again after a warranty repair, and in one case a piece struck another vehicle. A separate complaint involves a body shop unable to buy an aluminum roof panel because the dealer would sell it only to JLR-certified repair facilities, which can limit where collision repairs get done.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Range Rover Sport owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
Electrical fault detected - pull over safely error message appeared while driving, and when vehicle was shut off, low battery warning appeared. Started vehicle and attempted to put in drive and failed with drivetrain error, then suspension error and power steering error. Replaced 12V battery next morning and still received electrical fault error. Towed to dealer and diagnosed with DC-DC converter failure.

Rear cameras(3) no access from menu. Shows a red circle crossed out on menu. Car available for inspection. Backing vehical warning system was working in reverse, accompanied by hazard proximity beeping, but abruptly stopped working after a thorough cleaning. Suspect water in cameras which does match a mfg recall notice for this vehicle, or Land Rover recall notice N778 No dealer has inspected yet.

My land Rover Defender is 5 months old with 5,765 miles on it. Driving through the car wash today the windshield "popped" and a large crack started in the top center and spread out both directions in what looks like a mustache. No chip, vehicle was not moving and the windshield failed. Unacceptable.
Filed with NHTSA, June 2022
I Have a 2022 Land Rover defender 110 and it had 8,000 miles on it. One day I was driving and the windshield just cracked, nothing had hit it and no visible chips were present. I have yet to receive a replacement windshield.
Filed with NHTSA, November 2022
While driving on a busy road. My car gave a message saying electrical failure and transmission failure. Within 20 seconds shut the car down before I could safely pull over and it was unable to start. Hazard lights didn’t work and I was stuck in the middle of the road until a tow truck came. The dealer diagnosed the problem as a failure of the dc to dc converter. It has been replaced but took two weeks to repair

On several occasions the vehicle shifted by itself from D to N. Leaving you stuck until you shifted into P then back to D. This is scary and potentially dangerous. Dealer has only a service bulletin, so if you complain they can hopefully fix it. But, this is dangerous should have a recall.
Filed with NHTSA, November 2022
The LED DRLs failed in the first 28000 miles leaving no DRLs. Researching this issues shows it it a known defect but not considered a safety issue. I disagree as visibility is greatly diminished without the lights. Numerous online complaints and LRJ reuses to compensate owners out of warranty.
Filed with NHTSA, April 2026
The Daytime Running Headlights have gone out once again. This is such a common issue with the Land Rover Defenders yet, the manufactures force the customers to pay $3000 to $5000 to replace. Police will pull you over for this issue ask they think you headlight is completely out.
