Which X5 is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2022 BMW X5. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 4.4L 8-cylGas | AWD | 18 mpg |
| 3.0L 6-cylHybrid | AWD, RWD | 23 mpg |
| 3.0L 6-cylPlug-in hybrid | AWD | 400 mi range |
- The 2022 BMW X5 was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A X5 that averages well under the EPA 18 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.
Check the odometer against these mileages
Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2022 BMW X5, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Transmission141 crash
Sudden loss of power with a Drivetrain Malfunction warning is the main pattern. Cars shift into neutral, lose throttle response, or stall on highways and busy roads. Some also show tight steering and a string of chassis and power supply warnings. On 45e plug-in hybrids, several failures trace to the high-voltage box or hybrid safety box, leading to repeat tows and long dealer stays. Other reports describe jerking and shuddering at low speeds and in turns, blamed on the transfer case. A service bulletin fluid change does not always fix it. One parking-lot crash involves unintended acceleration.
Electrical71 crash
The power control system fails again and again, bringing up stop-driving-immediately warnings, and in one case the power steering starts to fail. Coolant pumps leak and set off low-coolant warnings. The AC compressor and condenser can fail between 40-50k miles and send metal shavings through the system. A burning smell during charging raises fire concerns, even after the charging unit was replaced. Other reports cover rodent-chewed wiring and the start/stop system restarting the car in a closed garage. One injury crash happened while a driver-assist mode was active.
Engine3No crashes
Water pump leaks and failures make up every report. They turn up during routine service or after a low-coolant warning. Reported failures fall between about 21,000 and 70,381 miles. In one case the pump was leaking coolant onto electrical circuits in the engine compartment. Owners say the repair was not covered under recall. Campaign 24V608000 addresses this problem, but this model year was not part of the original VIN selection. No crashes or fires are reported.
Brakes3No crashes
Automatic emergency braking slams on the brakes at about 45 mph with nothing ahead, which creates a rear-end risk. Another failure starts with a brake system malfunction warning telling the driver to pull over. The pedal then resists underfoot, and the car has to be towed. A third report says the brake did not hold at a red light and the car moved forward. No crashes or injuries are reported in this category.
Steering3No crashes
Problems range from noise to loss of control. A high-pitched squeak while steering progresses to uneven resistance and delayed response within the first 1,600 miles, and dealers wait on parts from BMW. A lower front control arm snaps at low speed at 7,500 miles, and the repair estimate is $16k - $18k. Another failure has the steering wheel moving on its own in reverse with hard brakes. It stops only after a button near the shifter that had activated on its own is switched off.
Automatic emergency braking3No crashes
Adaptive cruise control brakes too late for stopped traffic or brakes hard with no hazard present. One report describes a sudden, sharp stop inside an intersection with nothing in the path, leaving the car at risk of being rear-ended. Owners also describe a driver assistance support reduced warning, in one case at a little over 200 miles, that switches off several safety features at once. No crashes are reported, but owners describe near misses.
Acceleration and cruise control22 crashes
Unintended acceleration at low speed, while parking or idling, is the only pattern, and both reports end in crashes. Drivers describe the car surging with their foot off the accelerator, or lunging after a foot caught on the floor mat, with no warning lights. In one case the parking sensors and automatic emergency braking did not step in. In the other, the driver had to use the parking brake to stop the car. No injuries are reported.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints X5 owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
Sudden loss of power. Vehicle warning after starting stating power supply issue even after a brand new battery from the dealership. 3 similar incidents in a month. During the final incident the vehicle was again towed to the dealership where it’s been there for over a week and power supply issues persist. They are changing the whole high voltage box due to some unfixable errors.
Filed with NHTSA, July 2025
1. Drivetrain Malfunction 2. It may cause danger while driving with limited power output, even stopping the vehicle in the middle of the road. 3. Still waiting for the dealer to diagnose the problem, but have found out that the same model has the same issue.
Filed with NHTSA, April 2023
Car has premature failure from the AC system. My system started to fail between 40-50k miles. Both the AC compressor and condenser failed causing metal pieces to be in the system. If not fixed, those metal shavings will cause failure in other electrical systems including the HV battery.
Filed with NHTSA, May 2025
The car's start and stop feature due to the way it is programed started up the car when it was already turned off in a garage causing carbon monoxide to fill up in the garage. There is no way to turn off the start/stop feature on the car to protect yourself or to make sure it's off. Very confusing and can create a risk of a person being hurt or killed due to the confusion of how the system works. This is a very dangerous situation.
Filed with NHTSA, January 2023
We were driving at about 45 miles per hour (not using adaptive cruise control) and the emergency braking system suddenly kicked in, slamming on the brakes even though there was nobody in front of us slowing down and there was no hazard. It created a dangerous situation as the car in back of us could have rear-ended us.
