Which Compass is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2022 Jeep Compass. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 2.4L 4-cyl | AWD, FWD | 25 mpg |
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Compass that averages well under the EPA 25 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2022 Jeep Compass, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Electrical891 crash
The instrument cluster goes dark or stays stuck in night mode during the day, so drivers cannot read speed or fuel level. Many reports also describe the engine shutting off at a stop and the parking brake setting itself, which forces a restart from park. Other symptoms include an electronic throttle warning with lost acceleration, a center screen that flashes or resets, a lagging or blue backup camera, and an alarm that will not stop. Dash problems often begin within the first few thousand miles. One crash with an injury is reported.
Exterior lights27No crashes
Despite the category name, nearly all of these reports are about dashboard and touchscreen brightness. The displays are either too dim to read in daylight or stuck at full brightness at night, which throws glare onto the windows. The manual dimmer often does nothing. Several owners say a dealer repair or software update did not last. Others were told no repair was available or that parts could not be ordered, and some waited weeks for service. A few reports mention a turn signal that will not cancel or an overly bright low beam.
Transmission131 crash
The car loses power or stalls, often while pulling away from a stop. The drive light flashes, a transmission or start/stop warning appears, and the parking brake engages on its own. One of these events led to a minor rear-end crash. Owners also report hard or delayed shifts, lurching at low speed, and a jolt when accelerating just before coming to a full stop. Dealer software updates and replacement parts often fail to fix it. Isolated reports include a front axle separating at the CV joint and a 4WD failure that left the car unable to move.
Engine13No crashes
Most complaints here are about the engine stalling when the auto start/stop system tries to restart it. The engine shuts off at a light and does not restart when the driver lifts off the brake. Sometimes the parking brake sets itself and a service shifter message appears. Getting going again usually means shifting to park and pressing the ignition again. Owners report near rear-end collisions. Separate reports describe sudden overheating that required a tow, and a stall at highway speed after which the car would not restart.
This small group covers overheating, stalling, and a stuck alarm. In one report, a head gasket failure came back after it was repaired, at 59,920 miles. Another describes a stall with a start/stop message, a blank screen, a blinking drive indicator, and the parking brake engaging without warning. A third describes a continuous alert sounding while the car was parked. Dealers could not duplicate or resolve these problems.
Lane keeping111 crash
Driver-assist systems shut themselves off or show service warnings, often shortly after the car is started. Blind spot, automatic emergency braking, and active lane management messages tend to appear together, and some clear only after a restart. Owners also report phantom braking with nothing ahead, lane assist that does not keep the car in its lane, and all audio, including safety chimes, fading to near silence on long drives. Dealers often find no fault. One crash happened when a backup alert did not sound.
Steering101 crash
Two problems stand out. The first is a clunk or click from the steering column or front left corner that keeps coming back after dealers replace the steering column, the rack, or the front axles. The second is the car pulling or steering on its own, including lane assist tugging the wheel toward other lanes. One crash with an injury involved the wheel spinning by itself at low speed. Owners also report a steering wheel that is locked at startup while the car will not move in gear. Some reports in this group describe stalling or hard shifting.
Automatic emergency braking6No crashes
Automatic emergency braking stops the car when nothing is ahead, including at highway speed. Collision warning and pedestrian braking also switch themselves off, sometimes every day, and cruise control, lane departure, and blind spot warnings can drop out with them. Problems begin very early, even on brand-new cars. Dealers usually cannot reproduce the fault. One report describes a car stuck in park that would not shut off until rescuers forced it into neutral.
Airbags33 crashes
Nothing deploys in serious crashes, according to all three reports in this group. They include a rollover after a rear-end impact and a crash where the car was pushed into the vehicle ahead. Two drivers were injured, one with a fractured arm. Two of the vehicles were declared total losses. The number of reports is small, but each one describes a severe impact where no air bag deployed.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Compass owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
The cluster display on my vehicle is dim too non visible in full sunlight , daylight operating conditions . Automatic display functions turned off and manual brightness adjusted full, yet the dim to non existent backlight does not change. I been told this is a problem and FCA engineers are looking at, but at what priority. It seems that more and more of these complaints are showing up. There needs to be a recall to fix.

The Compass has been stuck in “night mode,” cannot adjust the navigation panel or more importantly, the dashboard. I cannot see the dashboard in daylight, not able to see mph, any warnings etc. I see there is a recall but my car is not listed. I took it to the dealer in mid March 2023 and they said there was nothing they could do. Please help! I purchased this vehicle used and the issue was present.

Every morning the instrument panel and the radio/navigation screen are very dark. All of a sudden it will turn on. Sometimes a mile down the road and sometimes 5 miles down the road. Sometimes it never turns on. If I need to use the gps/navigation directions this is a big issue as I cannot see the screen. I cannot see the gas guage or instrument warnings. I cannot see the spedometer.
Filed with NHTSA, July 2023
The interior displays, instrument panel, and touch screen are stuck in bright day mode. The dimmer switch in the dash will not respond or change the brightness but still turns the overhead lights on and off. At night this causes blinding conditions and a glare on the windows decreasing visibility. The issue is to be investigated by the dealer, there was a wait to get it checked. There are no warning lights and the vehicle may be inspected at any time.

I was stopped at a red light. When the light turned green, my car completely froze and stalled. Everything on my car locked up. I was not able to turn my car off. My gear shift was locked and the gear letters were flashing. After about 1 minute my car starting moving. Scariest experience ever. I have a dash cam video but can not upload the video here.

On highway going 60 and vehicle powers down. I pulled over and turned it off and started it after 3 mins and proceeded and once I got to 40mph it powered down again. I pulled over and it’s been at the dealer since and they cannot get it to duplicate

Car has overheated and needed to be towed twice, the most recent being today. Car overheats suddenly and breaks down in unsafe locations including the interstate. The car has been to the dealership four times for engine problems with no fix. Check engine light comes on after car overheats.

Start/stop system. (Shuts engine off at red light, then turns back on when you take foot off brake and press gas) Was at a red light, when light turned green the car did not move. Had to put the car in park and hit the ignition button a few times before it would go.
