Which Compass is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2019 Jeep Compass. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 2.4L 4-cyl | AWD, FWD | 25–26 mpg |
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Compass that averages well under the EPA 25 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.
Check the odometer against these mileages
Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2019 Jeep Compass, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Electrical1072 crashes
Sudden stalls with the dashboard full of warnings dominate these reports. Messages for the transmission, ESC, AWD and coolant appear at once. Then the engine shuts off, the parking brake engages, or the steering and brakes go stiff. Many nearly new cars, some with under 500 miles, show the engine as running when it will not start. Auto start-stop also fails to restart at lights. Dealers often cannot reproduce the fault. Reported fixes include a PCM update and a new start-stop battery. Two reports involve crashes after stalls in traffic.
Engine52No crashes
The most common report is the engine shutting off along with a false "coolant temperature too high" warning. Power drops at any speed, including on the highway, while the coolant level and gauge read normal. Dealers often find no codes. A second pattern is oil burning between changes. Dealers run oil consumption tests, and some stalls trace back to low oil. The most serious reports describe oil mixing into the coolant and a blown head gasket, plus a full engine replacement at 50,000 miles.
Transmission351 crash
The costliest pattern is coolant mixing with transmission fluid or oil. The fluid turns milky and the engine or transmission is damaged, with one failure reported at 74,000 miles. Other reports describe lost power, limp mode, and a false coolant warning that blocks shifting. Some stalls are traced to the auxiliary battery or the PCM. A whining power takeoff unit near 50 mph and a worn CV axle at 50,000 miles also appear. One crash followed broken axles while driving in snow.
Steering191 crash
Popping, clunking, or thumping when turning points to a failed steering rack. Dealers have confirmed failed rack-and-pinion units around 63,000 miles. Fractured control arms and failed tie rods are also reported, and one complaint describes a long wait for a replacement rack. Many other complaints describe power steering cutting out when the engine stalls. This often comes with a false coolant warning or a "power steering system hot" message, and the wheel turns heavy at speed. One crash report describes the car pulling left and right on its own.
Brakes121 crash
The most alarming pattern is the electronic parking brake engaging on its own. It can stop the car in the middle of traffic or lock the brakes at a light, with one report at 12,000 miles. Other complaints describe grabby, overly sensitive pedals, grinding and squealing that dealers cannot reproduce, and early pad and rotor wear. One report covers failed rear calipers and parking brake actuators. A crash with 1 injury happened when the brakes failed to stop the car after several warning lights came on.
Airbags63 crashes
The main concern is air bags not deploying in frontal crashes, including a head-on collision at about 40 mph. The opposite fault also appears. Air bags fired with no collision at 55 mph on an interstate, and a curtain air bag went off in a parked car. Other reports describe the air bag warning light coming on and staying on. Three of the 6 complaints involve crashes, with 3 people injured.
Acceleration and cruise control51 crash
The common thread is a sudden loss of acceleration. The car drops into limp mode on the highway or shuts down after a false high coolant warning at 55 mph, and dealers often cannot reproduce the problem. Other reports describe the car lurching forward after braking, hard shifts, and stalls with the electronic throttle warning light on. One owner describes a brake pedal that locked at startup. One crash followed a total loss of brakes while using cruise control after the ABS light came on.
Exterior lights4No crashes
The main complaint is headlights that do not turn on, or that come on only minutes after the car starts. Replacing the bulb, the fuse, and even the whole headlamp assembly does not always fix it. The gear shift indicator lights also flicker or stay dark, so the driver cannot see which gear is selected. One fire report describes the engine compartment bursting into flames after the car had been parked for a few hours.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Compass owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
This has happened three times in the last 4 months. There is no pattern, rhyme, or reason to understand why this happens. Today, while driving on the interstate at approximately 60mph, My 2019 Jeep Compass (80k miles) jerked violently and displayed the “Engine Coolant Temp High” warning message while the temperature gauges spiked. I coasted off to the shoulder. This could have caused an accident.

Numerous times while driving at a low speed the EMERGENCY Brake suddenly came on for no reason. Car lost all ability to accelerate or brake at all. Had to be shut down multiple times to clear system to function again. Extremely dangerous in traffic for this to happen. Car has only 10000 miles and is maintained in every aspect.
Filed with NHTSA, November 2022
Every 3000 to 5000 miles the car jerks like the transmission is slipping, the coolant temperature warning sign comes on, and the car shuts off while driving. No warranty will fix the issue and it is very unsafe to have your car shut off while on the highway driving 70mph. This has happened several times. Jeep dealer will not fix

Engine stops during operation on the road. Occurs sporadically. Engine light illuminates, "High Coolant Temperature". Not able to restart vehicle and must wait a few minutes before starting. The illuminated light gauge turns off. Coolant levels in reservoir normal. Has occurred 12-15 times since ownership. No illuminated lights to take to mechanic.

Steering wheel feels like is almost completely detached. Every time we turn it sounds like it will break. This car is only 72k miles and the steering wheel should be working properly. There is a recall for this same issue for Jeep Cherokees for the same year as my Jeep Compass. This is a safety issue and very expensive to repair. Please help!

The life cycle of a CV axle usually lasts the life of a vehicle or between 70,000 and 140,000 miles. At 50,000 miles, mine already needs to be replaced. There was a recall on 2017 Jeep Compass for the driver side CV axle. It’s possible the same issue exists.

- Unsure of fault as it hasn’t gotten inspected by mechanic or insurance but when start it indicates issue with steering and ESC system - Safety of self and others was severe if wasn’t controlled or in un-ideal conditions - Condition has yet to be reproduced or confirmed, sitting in mechanics lot now, not inspected yet - no messages or warnings but the steering would auto correct to left and right randomly when straight driving on the highway

Where the 2019 fits in the Compass's history
Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.
The 2019 is the third model year of the Compass's second generation (2017–2026).
Jeep updated the Compass for 2022, so a 2019 does not have those changes.
What changed for 2022 (not on a 2019)
- Visual changes to exterior
- Completely redesigned interior

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2019-2020 Ram 1500, 1500 Classic and Jeep Compass vehicles. The windshield wiper arm or arms may loosen, possibly causing the wipers to not operate properly and reduce the driver's visibility in certain weather conditions.
Risk: Reduced visibility increases the risk of a crash.
Fix: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will tighten the wiper nuts, free of charge. The recall began April 27, 2020. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is W25.
