Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2023 Jeep Compass, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical10No crashes

Engine stalling is the most serious pattern. Owners describe the engine shutting off while driving or slowing for a turn, and the auto start/stop system cutting the engine before the car fully stops or failing to restart it. Hesitation, jerking and vibration under acceleration often come with it, sometimes within the first few thousand miles. Other reports describe dim or flickering instrument clusters, a body control module fault that made wipers, lights and screens act on their own and disabled emergency braking, and dead batteries that came back after repair. Dealers often cannot find the cause, and one report cites parts on backorder.

  • Transmission6No crashes

Jerking, shaking and hesitation when accelerating, especially from a stop or at low speed, run through most reports. Owners also describe hard jerks when shifting into gear, a whine during shifts, and sudden loss of power that nearly caused collisions. One report describes the power take-off unit failing at highway speed and leaving the car unable to drive. Auto start/stop sometimes fails to restart the engine at lights. Problems can start early, around 5,600 miles in one case, and dealers frequently cannot reproduce or fix them.

  • Steering51 crash

Sudden loss of control is the gravest concern here. Among 5 complaints, one crash with an injury describes the steering and brakes locking while warning lights filled the dash, followed by a rollover. Another describes a hard, unresponsive brake pedal at highway speed with stability control, park brake and start/stop warnings, at about 5,207 miles. Less severe reports cover a shaking steering wheel and swaying, a leaking rack and pinion that needed replacement, clicking during turns, and sharp plastic edges on the wheel trim.

  • Engine4No crashes

Sudden loss of power while driving is the main pattern, at speeds from city traffic up to about 70 mph. Owners describe a jolt like hitting a wall, a check engine or service transmission warning, little response from the gas pedal, and in some cases the car stopping in the road. Restarting can temporarily restore normal driving, but the problem returns. Dealers often find nothing, and a software update did not fix it in one report. One owner reports an exhaust valve fragment damaging a piston, requiring a new engine within months of purchase.

  • Exterior lights3No crashes

Screens flash at night. Both the instrument panel and the center display jump between dark and bright white when the car passes under street or freeway lights, causing glare and distraction regardless of speed or display settings. Owners report repeated dealer visits with no fix and little acknowledgment from Jeep customer care. A separate complaint describes the hazard light button sticking, a problem the owner and dealer reproduced on another 2023 Compass.

  • Brakes2No crashes

False automatic braking is the main hazard. The forward collision system can trigger hard braking on an open highway with no traffic ahead, nearly causing a rear-end crash from the car behind. Dealers report they cannot replicate the problem. Another failure leaves the forward collision system showing service and signal-lost messages. The dealer fix in that case calls for replacing a sensor, which requires removing the front bumper and grille and takes about 5 hours.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Compass owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
Nhtsa should not be permitted to claim zero recalls while they allege repaired. Repairs fail often, consumers should have right to make choice and not gov or business choosing for them. The safety recall for this vin failed! It is class 1. I don't gamble and would have never bought. You want to buy it?

Filed with NHTSA, July 2024

Electrical
High beams will not stay on even though they are “automatic”. The eco mode where the engine turns off at a light or when idling to save gas does not work at all.

Filed with NHTSA, September 2023

Transmission
The vehicle pops and spudders when cranked. While driving it looses power and will not go, causing me to almost get hit numerous times. When shifting into gear it jerks really hard

Filed with NHTSA, August 2023

Steering
The steering has a very sharp plastic that can make cut to the hands while driving and cause an accident. It looks like the finish of the plastic was not done correctly so when you touch those two molding it feels sharp. Maybe the pictures does not show but definitely needs to be checked with someone put their hands on the wheel on the side steering wheel

Filed with NHTSA, December 2024

Steering
Had to have rack and pinion replaced. Started leaks power steering fluid. Pretty sure cv joints are bad also, i have a clicking sound when I turn the wheels.

Filed with NHTSA, September 2024

Engine
While driving 65 miles an hour down the road my vehicle hit a hard stop( felt like I ran into a brick wall) . memo on my car popped up, saying service transmission. Being completely stopped and using the gas, it wraps up to four or five RPMs just to get me rolling. There’s not much power behind the gas pedal. Thankfully, the person behind me did not tail end me when my vehicle hard stopped.

As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 101, "Control and Displays.".

Risk: An IPC display that is not bright enough may not clearly show critical safety information, such as the speedometer or warning lights, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Dealers will update the body control module (BCM) software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed August 29, 2023. Owners may contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA US, LLC's number for this recall is 88A.
