Run the VIN before you go

A history report shows accidents, title brands, odometer readings, and open recalls for this 2020 Jeep Compass. Ask the seller for the VIN; it is also on the dash at the base of the windshield.

Which Compass is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2020 Jeep Compass. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
2.4L 4-cylAWD, FWD25–26 mpg
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Compass that averages well under the EPA 25 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2020 Jeep Compass, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical48No crashes

Stop/start failures lead these reports, with a "Stop/Start Unavailable" warning and engines that shut off at lights and will not restart. Main and auxiliary batteries die repeatedly, and some cars also need alternators, a PCM, or a wiring harness. The Uconnect screen pixelates, shows lines, or goes black and takes the backup camera with it. False high-coolant warnings that cut engine power on the highway also appear here. Some owners report door locks that stop working, and dealers often find no stored codes.

  • Transmission23No crashes

Sudden engine shutdown with a "Coolant temp too high" message is the main complaint, often while the gauge reads normal. Owners describe brief loss of steering and brakes, cars that will not restart, and dealers who cannot find a fault. Transmission complaints include hard slipping, running hot, jerking, and outright failure at high mileage. Reports also mention a driveshaft failure, metal in the oil, and 4WD engaging on its own. In one fire report, the shifter seized, the car would not register Park or turn off, and then it caught fire.

  • Engine16No crashes

Stalls are the most common engine complaint. The engine dies when coming to a stop, during turns, or after stop/start shuts it off, and drivers have to shift to Park to restart. Many owners suspect the stop/start system, and some see coolant or airbag warnings along with the stall. Dealers often cannot duplicate it and clear the codes. Other reports describe the 2.4 Tigershark engine using about a quart of oil a month, coolant disappearing with no visible leak, and a belt-like squeak when the AC is on.

Stalls in traffic come with a rising temperature gauge or a high-coolant-temperature message. The car loses power, then restarts and runs normally after a few minutes. Auto stop/start sometimes shuts the engine off at a light and fails to restart it, showing "Stop-Start Unavailable" and a check engine light. Dealers in these reports found no defect, even after a tow. One shutdown is reported at 74,685 miles.

  • Steering5No crashes

Few steering complaints concern the steering system itself. Most describe the engine shutting off while driving after an overheating or "key has left vehicle" message, which makes the car hard to steer out of traffic. Several of these trace back to weak auxiliary batteries and ESC warnings. Owners also report replacing both front tie rod ends, a failed driveshaft and transfer case, and long dealer visits that end without a fix.

  • Wipers and visibility41 crash

Windshield wipers stop working without warning. In one report this happened in rain at 35 mph and led to a crash with injuries. Another owner cannot find a replacement wiper motor, so the repair is held up by a part shortage. A separate complaint describes the windshield and side and rear glass looking distorted, as if melting, in hot weather. Several shops saw the problem but did not repair it under warranty.

  • Wheels and tires3No crashes

Front tires lose air suddenly, sometimes at highway speed with no road hazard involved. One report describes a bulging sidewall on a Continental tire that had to be patched, and another describes a front tire that needed replacement after repeated pressure loss. Both owners of Continental-equipped cars mention tire campaign notices, but the complaints do not establish whether their tires were covered.

  • Brakes3No crashes

Unexpected braking is the serious issue. The parking brake engages by itself as the car approaches a stop and stalls it in traffic. Separately, the forward warning system displays "BRAKE!" and slams on the brakes with nothing ahead, even after the dealer replaced the front camera. Both nearly caused rear-end collisions. A third complaint describes brakes squealing at low speed, still unfixed after the pads and rotors were replaced at 5K miles.

  • Airbags21 crash

In one crash report, the airbags did not deploy in a low-speed head-on collision in a parking lot. Two occupants hit their heads on the steering wheel and dashboard, and the car was totaled. The other complaint describes a "Service Airbag System" light that came back after the dealer replaced the occupant restraint control module and then the clock spring.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Compass owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
The A symbol continues to appear on the dashboard which indicates a failure in the STOP/START function of the vehicle. the vehicle has under 21,000 miles on it. I just purchased the vehicle a little over 90 days ago. Returned the vehicle to the service center where vehicle was purchased, and was told that it required an out of pocket expense of over $600.00 . The auto-light button switches back to manual on its own.

Transmission
I did an oil change mid august and found bits of metal in the oil at 50,000 miles, Ive change the oil every 5000 miles. I haven't been rough with it and also every time I get on the highway or rev my engine up to 4000 rpm the transmission slips hard on the 4th gear usually. If I have it on FWD it slips as well. The Blind spot warning goes off randomly sometimes as well.

Engine
19000 miles and consumes 1 quart of oil a month. This has been doing this since bought new. Told dealer on two services and dealer (Smith Haven Jeep, St. James, NY) said this is normal. I know this is not normal for a new car. I drive about 400 miles a month unless going on vacation.

Where the 2020 fits in the Compass's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2020 is the fourth model year of the Compass's second generation (2017–2026).

Jeep updated the Compass for 2022, so a 2020 does not have those changes.

What changed for 2022 (not on a 2020)

Recalls to confirm (1)

Recall repairs are free at any Jeep dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 20V208000Wipers and visibilityApr 2020

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2019-2020 Ram 1500, 1500 Classic and Jeep Compass vehicles. The windshield wiper arm or arms may loosen, possibly causing the wipers to not operate properly and reduce the driver's visibility in certain weather conditions.

Risk: Reduced visibility increases the risk of a crash.

Fix: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will tighten the wiper nuts, free of charge. The recall began April 27, 2020. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is W25.
