Which Taos is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2022 Volkswagen Taos. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 1.5L 4-cyl | AWD, FWD | 28–31 mpg |
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Taos that averages well under the EPA 28 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.
Check the odometer against these mileages
Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.
Stalling on nearly new cars
50–450 miles
Premature rear brake wear
7,223–30,000 miles
Coolant loss, head gasket leak
13,000–68,000 miles
Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2022 Volkswagen Taos, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Engine701 crash
Coolant disappears with no visible leak, and the low coolant light keeps coming back. Dealers often top it off or replace the reservoir cap. Many cars are later found to have a leaking cylinder head gasket. Reports run from about 13,000 to 68,000 miles. Several owners hit the problem just after their warranty ended and were quoted repairs of about $4,000. Parts backorders left some cars waiting for months. A smaller group reports stalling while driving, repeated check engine lights tied to the evap system, and engines that seized or needed replacement.
Coolant loss and head gasket leaks appear again. Dealers diagnosed them at about 20,000 and 33,000 miles, and one low coolant warning came at 87,100. Stalling is the other theme. In one report the car stalled at a stop when the driver pressed the gas. In another, a car stalled, was restarted, then would not stop and hit a fence. That crash injured the driver and totaled the car. Jerking at stops and a transmission fluid leak also appear.
Electrical441 crash
Most of these reports describe stalling and sudden power loss. The EPC and check engine lights often come on, and a message limits the engine to 4000 rpm, sometimes at highway speed. Some cars will not restart. The infotainment screen and backup camera go black or reboot while driving, and the car warns that the key fob is missing while it is moving. Other complaints cover false automatic braking, safety systems shown as unavailable, and evap codes that return after repairs. One filing describes a frontal crash in which the airbags did not deploy.
Brakes43No crashes
The rear brake pads wear out far too early, often down to bare metal with no warning light, while the front brakes look nearly new. Owners report rear brake jobs between about 7,223 and 30,000 miles. Some have replaced them two or three times, often with new rotors too. Owners say the rear brake warranty was extended to 24,000 miles. Many missed that window because the wear was only found at the 30,000-mile service. Grinding noise, shaking when braking, and a leaking rear caliper also appear.
Transmission38No crashes
Head gasket leaks lead this category too. Owners report coolant loss, overheating warnings, and dealer diagnoses between about 19,200 and 68,000 miles, and some waited 2 months or more for parts. The second pattern is a delay when accelerating from a stop, followed by a sudden lunge. Drivers say this nearly caused collisions at intersections. Other reports include stalling at speed on nearly new cars, limp mode with a start/stop error, fuel smell in the cabin, and harsh shifting.
Fuel system21No crashes
Turbo lag and throttle delay are the most common complaints. The car takes 1 to 2 seconds or longer to respond, then lurches forward. Stalling and power loss with the EPC light also appear. Several reports cover fuel problems. One is a gauge that reads half full when the tank is empty, which led to stalls. Others describe a strong gasoline smell in the cabin and a leaking fuel line or hose that owners feared could start a fire. Waits for parts kept some cars at the dealer for weeks.
Most of these filings are about waiting for recall repair parts, not about a failure on the road. Owners say dealers could not get the part or tool, and several had not had any problem with the car. The other reports describe power loss with the EPC and check engine lights on, sputtering, a car that would not go above 10 mph, and one seized engine. One owner had the evap valve replaced 6 times in 4 months at about 9,000 miles.
Acceleration and cruise control131 crash
From a stop, the accelerator does nothing for several seconds, and then the car lunges forward, sometimes spinning the tires. Drivers describe near misses during left turns and in traffic. One filing reports a low-speed rear-end crash after the pedal failed to respond and then surged. Dealers often find no fault, though some tell owners they know about the lag and have no fix. A few 4Motion owners describe stalling while driving, including on a busy interstate, and dealers telling them not to drive the car until it was repaired.
Steering41 crash
The most serious report describes total loss of control. Steering and brakes stopped responding, and the car crashed with its side airbags deployed. Other filings describe brief steering stiffness along with shaking and a flashing check engine light. Another reports ABS, tire pressure, and driver-assist warnings that light up together and clear after a minute. One driver felt a strong front wobble at low speeds.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Taos owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
Warning light for coolant appeared around 11K mile mark, took it in to dealership where service department said there were no leaks and added coolant. After several months, warning light appeared again, only this time I bought coolant from dealership and topped it off myself. They said it's normal for this to happen. 3 months later, the warning light is back on and a different dealership is now saying the head gasket needs to be replaced.

Our VW Taos has 7,700 miles. This morning our engine coolant light came on. On engine inspection, our coolant level is less than minimum. This should not be happen on an engine that is less than a year old and with less than 10k miles. Researching the issue, the Taos is having head gasket issues with this new engine. Many, many, many complaints can be found online. Please help us Taos drivers by making VW issue a proper recall.

I have taken my Taos in for 1 year / work 10,000 mile inspection. I was told my breaks are worn and I should monitor them. This should not be happening when the car is one year old with less than 10,000 miles. I believe inferior brakes were designed for the car. This seems to be major complaint for many of us who purchased the car in the first year. The ECU light that has come on 3 times over the year is a problem. No known diagnosis for the problem.

Stepping in the gas, the car takes about 4-5 seconds before it speeds up after each stop. When pulling out of a drive, the car sputtered and the check engine light was flashing and the Start/stop error came on. The delayed driving happens every time I drive the car. Only have about 44k miles on it. I have had multiple people almost rear end me. I have had the car for about 3 weeks now.

Rear brake pads were worn to the metal at 20,000 miles. Front brakes were perfect. Had NTB look at them after VW told me my brakes were squeaky because of the weather. NTB agreed this was not normal for a brand new car. They said the front pads would be worn as well if it were because of driving behaviors. I contacted VW and informed them a lot of VW Taos owners are having this issue. They did nothing.

Brakes are on this care are failing well in advance of typical cars. My car's rear brakes are messing at a 3 with less than 20,000 miles on the vehicle. I'm aware of a safety campaign, but VW says my car wasn't made in that window. Clearly something is wrong or my brakes wouldn't be wearing out at less than half of what is expected. Ironically, my wife's Passat is doing the same.

I bought the car new on May 31, 2022. It had 266 miles on the odometer. With approx 200 miles driven it shut down while driving at 35 MPH. The dealer, East Coast VW, had it towed. After 10 days they said it was a faulty fuel sending unit and I was out of fuel, even though the fuel gauge read 3/8 of a tank. So again it happened. Saturday 8-27-2022. With 450 miles I've driven. Fuel gauge read 5/8 of a tank. This time it happened at 60 MPH in traffic.

Head Gasket Leaking Coolant, yes it's available for inspection Engine could cease to operate properly Head gasket leaking was confirmed by Volkswagen Dealer No, I had a low coolant light, manual says add fluid This is a very HIGH COST REPAIR Brake Pads were worn out at 16,000 miles, replace ourselves because out of warranty at the time

Where the 2022 fits in the Taos's history
Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.
The 2022 is the first model year of the Taos's first generation (2022 on). First years of a redesign often carry teething problems that Volkswagen fixes in later years, so the checks above matter more than usual.
Volkswagen updated the Taos for 2025, so a 2022 does not have those changes.
What changed for 2025 (not on a 2022)
- Updated bodywork
- Revised 1.5-litre engine (174hp)
- 8-speed automatic transmission standard
Should you avoid the first year of a redesign? See the 45-car study.
