Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2022 Audi Q3, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical71 crash

The rear camera goes black or shows up late, and one owner reports backing into a car after the screen failed. Other reports describe a sudden flood of warnings for driver assists, steering, tire pressure, parking aid and the starting system, sometimes with the engine shutting off at a stop and refusing to restart. The infotainment system switches audio sources by itself and drops navigation. Parking chimes can go silent under phone audio. Several owners say dealers acknowledged a pending fix but had no repair to offer. A sunroof leak through the ceiling light also appears.

  • Fuel system4No crashes

Stalling and no-start conditions tied to the fuel pump are the most serious pattern, including an engine cutting off in a drive-through line and a pump replaced twice. A check engine light for the evap canister keeps returning even after parts are replaced. Two owners describe disputes with dealers over whether the fuel tank needed replacement. One says the dealer later found a fuel system fault, cleared the code at about 14,962 miles, and had no repair available.

  • Backup camera3No crashes

The rearview camera is unreliable. It fails to engage, appears late, renders steering guide lines late or not at all, or gets covered by another screen. Front parking chimes often do not sound when music or other audio is playing, and they return once that audio stops. The fault is sporadic, and dealers struggle to reproduce it. Owners call it a near-collision risk. One report concerns waiting on a recall repair because parts were not yet available.

  • Automatic emergency braking2No crashes

Two very different failures appear. In one, a lane-guidance feature engages on its own and keeps steering the car, making lane changes a struggle even after a restart. That is a loss-of-control risk at highway speed. In the other, the front pre-sense system fails to warn or brake when tested at low and medium speeds against obstacles, even though dealer diagnostics show it passing. Both owners describe the problem as a serious safety concern.

  • Brakes2No crashes

A loud resonant tone comes from the brakes when the car creeps at low speed. One owner says it started on the second day of ownership, at about 4k miles, and happens every time. The dealer found no malfunction and calls the noise normal, so no repair was attempted. A separate complaint says the brake and gas pedals are hard, slippery plastic that a foot can slide off. No reports describe a loss of braking power.

  • Equipment2No crashes

These reports are mostly about recall delays. Owners were told their cars were part of a rear camera campaign but that parts were not yet available, and they feel the wait has gone on too long. One describes the infotainment screen going blank while driving, which takes the rearview camera with it, at about 9,700 miles. That car was left unrepaired while parts were pending.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Q3 owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
We have spoken with the dealership multiple times about the safety concern of the recall on this vehicle. We have gotten nowhere with them. It is required that every vehicle have a backup camera for safety reasons and this does not work die to this recall. They are just dismissing anything and should be providing a replacement vehicle that does work until they are able to fix this problem.

Filed with NHTSA, May 2023

Electrical
My vehicle was idling and came to a complete stop and stopped the engine and then an electrical malfunction message appeared and the car wouldn’t start back up. Various error messages started to appear on the drivers display (tpms, abs stabilization, lane assistance disabled)

Filed with NHTSA, July 2023

Fuel system
Audi informed me that even though there was an initiated safety recall, and there was a test of our vehicle that confirmed the problem that the recall had identified such that the fuel tank should be replaced, they have recalculated the parameters for the recall and after further testing decided that the vehicle now is no longer unsafe. We do not believe them.

Filed with NHTSA, March 2023

Automatic emergency braking
The Pre-Sense Front System does not work. Tested with low and medium speeds. Dealer tested with diagnostics and said it pasts tests. It is set correctly inside. Tested it again using "dummy" cardboard boxes. Does not warn me or apply brakes.
