Which Santa Fe is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 2.5L 4-cylGas | AWD, FWD | 24–26 mpg |
| 1.6L 4-cylHybrid | AWD | 34 mpg |
| 1.6L 4-cylPlug-in hybrid | AWD | 440 mi range |
- The 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Santa Fe that averages well under the EPA 24 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.
Check the odometer against these mileages
Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Transmission503 crashes
The car suddenly loses power or will not accelerate, often stuck at 20 to 35 mph while dashboard lights flash. Restarting usually brings back normal driving, and dealers often cannot reproduce the problem. Some reports blame a defective throttle body or cite electronic throttle codes. Others describe rough, lagging shifts or a transmission stuck in one gear. Most cases start early, between about 900 and 15,241 miles. One transmission failed completely at 68,000 miles. Separate crash reports say the car surged or rolled after being put in Park, hitting a building and a garage door.
Electrical34No crashes
Horn failure is the main problem. Both horns quit, often around 20,000 miles, and replacement horns can fail again. One owner reports four failures, and another paid out of pocket for a repeat repair. Owners note that a dead horn can fail state inspection. Other reports describe sudden power loss with battery and engine-off warnings, auto stop-start failing to restart the engine at a stop, and one complete electrical shutdown while reversing. False automatic emergency braking at highway speed also shows up here. One rental caught fire about 8 hours after it was parked.
Engine19No crashes
Sudden stalls while driving lead this category. The car shuts off or drops to about 10 mph, with check engine, oil pressure, and charging system warnings and a prompt to shift to N and restart. Restarting usually clears it, and dealers often find no codes. Hybrid owners report sudden EV system failures on the highway. Other complaints cover throttle hesitation, low-speed lag from the dual-clutch transmission, a coil failure at 7,500 miles, oil consumption, and a leaking fuel injector that soaked the starter. One report says cruise control pushed the car past 110 mph.
Brakes171 crash
Front rotors warp, sending shudder through the steering and the front end when braking from highway speed. It can start within the first few months of ownership, and some dealers resurface the rotors more than once. Other owners say the brakes apply themselves on the highway, the pedal sinks or locks, the ABS grabs and grinds, or the pedal is stiff on the first start of the day. In one crash with 4 injuries, a pulsating pedal failed to stop the car while parking. In one case, a wheel speed sensor was found to be the cause.
Automatic emergency braking13No crashes
Automatic emergency braking engages at highway speeds with nothing ahead. The car slows hard, which puts it at risk of being rear-ended. Some events jerk the steering wheel or pull the car to the left. Other owners see a collision-system warning, after which the accelerator stops responding until the car is restarted. Dealers usually find no stored codes and cannot identify a cause. A smaller group of reports describes the opposite problem: forward collision warning that stays silent when it should alert.
Acceleration and cruise control11No crashes
Smart cruise control misbehaves in several ways. It can brake hard while moving into a passing lane next to a semi, climb 20 mph past the set speed, or shut off suddenly with a radar-blocked message in winter grime. One owner ties new phantom braking to a software update. Other reports describe sudden loss of accelerator power on the highway, including hybrids that show Check Hybrid System and red battery warnings. Repairs mentioned include an accelerator switch, a wheel speed sensor at 22000 miles, and a fuel injector at 44000 miles.
Seat belts31 crash
Belts fail to latch, come unlatched while driving, or do not lock in a collision. In one rear-end crash report, the driver's belt did not tighten and the driver's head hit the steering wheel. In another, a child in the second-row middle seat was thrown toward the center console under braking. With only 3 complaints there is no clear pattern, but every report involves a restraint that did not hold an occupant.
Airbags22 crashes
Both complaints in this category come from crashes. In one, the air bags did not deploy after the car went into a guardrail, and the driver adds that emergency braking and lane keeping did not activate. In the other, the air bag deployed in an intersection collision and caught fire within seconds. Both crashes caused injuries. Two reports are too few to show a pattern.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Santa Fe owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
Front brake failure at 3k miles. Rotors warped so badly they failed to properly stop the vehicle. Vehicle shaking immensely Transmission failure at 11k miles. While vehicle is in Drive mode the transmission is stuck in first gear and will not shift. The tachometer was redlining at 6k I had to use the paddle shifters to get the transmission to shift. I was driving the vehicle as a manual transmission when I own an automatic.

vehicle fails to accelerate, engine is “sputtering” and making a rattling sound and battery is draining to nothing on the freeway driving at normal speeds. vehicle is lurching and engine does not appear to be shifting as it should - car losing power and failing to accelerate despite being full of gas. transmission doesn’t feel like it is shifting properly. vehicle only has 8000 miles.

The car loses power. The battery and key ignition light keep coming on. A message displays auto engine off. Please shift to n or p and start engine manually. After communicating and showing video proof of the incident, the dealership replaced the alternator and battery. The issues started around 5000 miles. The infotainment system lags and the car lags. Sometimes I am left on the road because the case refuses to cut on or off.

Horn completely out, yes available. I was unable to warn another driver from entering my lane several times. Warn a pedestrian from stepping out into traffic. Confirmed by the dealer. The horn was Inspected replaced at my own cost on March 2025 by December 2025 the part is no longer operational. I asked the dealer to honor the warranty they declined saying the mileage was passed the warranty terms.
Filed with NHTSA, January 2026
When I start driving the car if I come up to a hill when I try to accelerate to move forward the cars engine cuts out almost like it stalls. I have to floor or pump the gas which makes a revving sound and the car will go.
Filed with NHTSA, July 2024
Throttle randomly cuts off or hesitates. It has done it about 15 times Dealer says no problem found. There is a lot of reports on the internet of the same problem.
Filed with NHTSA, January 2024
While parking, the brakes failed. Although the brake pedal was correctly and completely depressed the car failed to stop until it hit the building causing damage to structure and injuries occurred to passengers. The brake pedal pulsated but the car did not stop. Prior to this, the brakes would sporadically pulsate while braking. There were vehicle health issues that were reported.
Filed with NHTSA, December 2023
Since I have had the car, five months, there have been THREE INCIDENTS of the car braking to a stop suddenly and unexpectedly while I am driving. At no time were there other cars near me; I was not in danger of hitting anything or anyone as the road was clear. The stops were jarring and upsetting as I could not discern a reason for these sudden stops. I feel it is very dangerous to stop in the middle of the street without warning.
