Which Santa Fe is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2025 Hyundai Santa Fe. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
2.5L 4-cylGasAWD, FWD23–24 mpg
1.6L 4-cylHybridAWD, FWD34–36 mpg
  • The 2025 Hyundai Santa Fe was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Santa Fe that averages well under the EPA 23 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2025 Hyundai Santa Fe, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical21No crashes

On hybrid models, the 12-volt battery drains overnight. The car is left locked and dark and needs a jump or a tow. Most reports come early, between about 900 and 4,300 miles, and one comes at 18,531. Dealers often replace the battery first. In one case the fix also needed a new hybrid starter generator and a relay pack that was back-ordered. Other reports describe a dark instrument cluster and screen, a shifter that stays in Neutral or ignores Park and lets the car roll, limp mode with a Hybrid Power Control Unit warning, and phantom braking.

  • Acceleration and cruise control141 crash

Cruise control shuts off mid-drive when the driver-attention camera loses sight of the driver's eyes. The car can then slow sharply at highway speed, and following drivers see no brake light. Common triggers are sunglasses, prescription glasses, and sun glare. The monitor can't be turned off while smart cruise is on. Some cars show a constant system-failure message that disables cruise. Separate reports describe hybrid limp mode holding speed to 10 to 35 mph. One crash with an injury followed unintended acceleration from a stoplight.

  • Automatic emergency braking12No crashes

False inattention warnings chime every few minutes even when the driver is looking ahead, and they often cancel adaptive cruise control. Several reports say the car braked hard or slowed down on the interstate after an alert. One owner counts three hard-braking events in nearly 8,000 miles. Sunglasses and some prescription glasses are the most cited triggers, but alerts also happen without them. Dealers and Hyundai often say the system works as designed. One owner says technical service bulletin 25-GI-001H did not fix it.

  • Transmission12No crashes

Shifting and power delivery fail in several ways. The car can get stuck showing a "gear already selected" message and refuse to shut off. It can slip into Neutral and roll, or hold a low gear while revs climb. Hybrids go into limp mode with top speeds of 10 to 25 mph, and some cars rev past 5,000 rpm without gaining speed. Other reports include stalling, hesitation from a stop, a check-transmission-oil warning, and communication fault codes starting at 67 miles. One car needed a new catalytic converter. Another needed a new transmission after a whistle that started at 16,500 miles.

  • Wipers and visibility91 crash

The washer nozzles spray too low and can't be adjusted, so the upper windshield stays dirty in snow, with bugs, and at highway speed. Wipers stop working, sometimes after snow builds up. One driver's-side wiper failed twice in three weeks. Windshields crack without impact or keep cracking, and one owner reports heavy streaking in rain at night. The rearview camera image can go blank. Safety Recall 25V-808 covers this through the camera harness. One owner had a minor backing crash before getting the recall repair.

  • Wheels and tires4No crashes

Factory tires fail early. Sidewalls bulge or blow out between about 1,500 and 7,500 miles. Most reports involve the factory Pirelli Scorpion MS 20-inch tires, which also cause vibration at highway speed. Replacing two tires did not always stop the shaking. On one AWD SEL with Goodyear Assurance tires, the rear tread wore faster than the front and measured 3/32 inch at 6,172 miles. Dealers have declined to help, and Pirelli wants the tire shipped in for inspection before covering it.

  • Steering4No crashes

Stiff, squeaky steering shows up after 10 to 20 minutes of driving with steering assist, or right away on cold days under 50F. Clearing it takes a full stop and restart, and dealers struggle to reproduce it. Other reports describe the wheel jerking right during a turn and sending the car over a median. Another describes a hybrid shutdown with a vibrating wheel that happened four times in 7 months. One owner also reports repeated overnight battery drain.

  • Seat belts22 crashes

In rear-end crashes, belts come loose or detach from the seat. Both reports involve the vehicle being hit from behind while stopped. In one, the driver's belt stopped working and separated from the seat, the air bags did not deploy, and the car was totaled. In the other, a passenger's belt came loose near the waist. Two occupants in that crash were hurt, one with a concussion.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Santa Fe owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
Car did dashboard update on 4/10/25. Had less than 4300 miles. Unable to unlock car due to dead battery. Car unlock service opened door for tow company to jump battery and advise that the new 2025 Santa Fe Hybrid battery needs to be replaced. May need other service (alternator or Hybrid battery too) but the 12v battery had been drained. Interior lights would not turn on prior to this happening.

Electrical
My car was locked and battery had died. I was able to get in car with key from fob. I had to put car charger on battery in order to start car. This car is a year old with 18,531 miles

Acceleration and cruise control
The cruise control system cuts of with message on screen stating that , system camera can’t see my face and the system de-activates. This is especially dangerous at highway speeds. The vehicle behind me doesn’t see a brake light as my vehicle suddenly looses speed. This is from Hyundais Driver Attention Warning (DAW) function. This function cannot be de-activated by myself or my dealership which is Webb Hyundai of Merrillville Indiana.

Acceleration and cruise control
The sensor always goes off stating my eyes aren't on the road to the point it trys to stop the vehicle in traffic. This prevents me from being able to use cruise control because the sensor is causing issues by not detecting my eyes

Filed with NHTSA, March 2025

Automatic emergency braking
I just purchased a 2025 Hyundai Santa Fe and the Smart Cruise Control won't work with sunglasses on. There is an Infared sensor on the steering column that has to see your eyes. Sunglasses are needed for this vehicle. If you don't wear them, the sunlight blinds you. The system will beep, display a message stating full face can't be seen, and it shuts the cruise control off and the vehicle decelerates, which is unsafe.

Transmission
Started car, reading paperwork and suddenly my car went into Neutral bycitself and rolled backwards in a parking lot. Thank goodness no one was walking behind my car. This is the 2nd time it has happened. Additionally, twice previously, my car screen blacked off. 1 other time while sitting at a traffic light, the car shut off. I have been patient but now I'm afraid ti drive this car with only 2,650 miles on it.

Transmission
Bought this brand new Santa Fe in July 2025 and on day 5 after purchasing this vehicle, car stopped accelerating while driving on highway, which is a serious safety concern. Took the vehicle back to the dealership and turned out the issue is with failed catalytic converter and they had to replace it. Since then, the acceleration has not been that great and had continuous issues with random engine noises etc
