Which Malibu is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2022 Chevrolet Malibu. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
1.5L 4-cylFWD32 mpg
2.0L 4-cylFWD26 mpg
  • The 2022 Chevrolet Malibu was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Malibu that averages well under the EPA 26 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2022 Chevrolet Malibu, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Transmission202 crashes

The car often fails to recognize Park. It shows a "Shift to Park" message, stays powered on, and sometimes beeps until the battery drains. Owners report this between about 28,619 and 44,000 miles, often just past the 36,000-mile warranty, and dealers blame the shifter. A second pattern is turbo underboost (code P0299), with sudden limp mode and power loss while merging on the highway. Some owners describe a jerking, slipping transmission, even after a replacement. Two reports involve crashes, including a delayed throttle response followed by a surge into a curb.

  • Electrical14No crashes

These complaints cover many unrelated faults. The most common is the Shift to Park fault, and one dealer quoted over $600 for an out-of-warranty shifter replacement. Several reports describe the engine cutting out while driving, Engine Power Reduced episodes at highway speed, and check engine lights the dealer could not explain. Others cite Bluetooth that drops daily, a telematics fault that disables OnStar, CarPlay and hands-free calling, and lingering ESC, power steering, and seatbelt tensioner warnings. One owner lost the headlights while using the infotainment system.

  • Engine6No crashes

Turbocharger failure is the only pattern here. A check engine light comes on with code P0299, power drops, and the car goes into limp mode. Failures cluster around 66,000 miles, shortly after the 60,000-mile powertrain warranty runs out. Owners mention a GM special coverage program for some 2022 cars, but several say their VIN is not included. One owner was quoted 2,200 for the repair. Only 3 complaints fall under this heading.

Turbocharger failure causes stalling or sudden deceleration, then limp mode with the check engine light on. One car could not exceed 40 MPH. Mechanics found failed turbos, including one leaking oil, and one failure came at 110,022 miles. In two cases the dealer neither diagnosed nor repaired the car. Another report links an Engine Overheating warning to a faulty turbo, which came after a whining transmission was replaced. The stalls at road speed create a real risk in traffic.

  • Airbags21 crash

Airbags fail to deploy in a crash. In one case the car rear-ended another vehicle at 20 MPH with no airbag deployment and no warning light, and a collision shop said the bags should have fired and found a component that was never welded. A second owner reports a restraint system fault that Chevrolet cannot fix. Only 2 complaints are filed here, but one involved a crash.

  • Steering2No crashes

Power steering assist drops out. One report describes the wheel jerking when pulling away from a stop, along with a "Power Steering Assist Is Reduced" warning. Another describes a full loss of power steering at about 40 MPH, along with poor brake response, RPMs falling to zero, and traction control and check engine lights. That problem returned after a dealer repair. Both cases carry a loss-of-control risk, though there are only 2 complaints.

  • Acceleration and cruise control2No crashes

The car loses acceleration and shows a reduced power warning. In one case it slowed suddenly at 45 MPH and then could not exceed 10 MPH. The dealer traced that failure to the turbocharger at about 62,000 miles, and GM confirmed there was no coverage. Another owner made five dealer visits for a failed accelerator position sensor, and the pedal was replaced twice without a lasting fix. A sudden power loss in traffic is the main hazard.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Malibu owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Transmission
Car will not turn off. Message of “Shift to Park” will appear even if shift is in Park. This is a safety issue. I just bought my car 2 days ago and it keeps happening. The car is only at approximately 44,000 miles.

Filed with NHTSA, January 2025

Transmission
When shifting into park, an error message shows as 'shift to park'. This isn't every time I shift into park, but when it does occur, I have to shift into reverse and then drive (possibly several times) before the transmission acknowledges the 'park' designation. I do not believe I can exit my vehicle safely as the transmission may allow the vehicle to disengage and move from the parking area causing damage to something or someone.

Electrical
The telematics module is having an issue where the onstar safety system in the car does not work this will automatically call emergency services in the case of an accident it also controls wireless CarPlay and the microphone connected to the radio so you can’t make hand free calls

Filed with NHTSA, October 2025

Electrical
After I shift into park and turn my car off I’m getting a message that says Shift To Park. The car is already in park but it’s not recognizing this. I see that this is a known problem with 2022 Malibu’s but my VIN is not included. Can you please add my VIN to this recall?

Filed with NHTSA, July 2025

Engine
Turbo waste gate failed at under 66,000 miles, that’s just was soon after warranty expired at 60,000-5years GM recalled a select group for turbos for this year. This turbo on the 1.5L cars, falls and should be replaced on all models.

Filed with NHTSA, February 2026

Engine
Check engine light came on. Took car to Autozone and O'Reilly's to be given the same P0299 code which is a failed turbocharger. Reduced engine power, car goes into limp mode. GM has issued a special coverage program for 2022 Chevy Malibu as of Nov 2025 but for some reason my car is not covered!!

Where the 2022 fits in the Malibu's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2022 is the seventh model year of the Malibu's ninth generation (2016 on).

Chevrolet updated the Malibu for 2024, so a 2022 does not have those changes.

What changed for 2024 (not on a 2022)

  • Final year of production in the US.
  • End of sales in the US.
  • No immediate successor announced.

Recall repairs are free at any Chevrolet dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 22V923000Body and structureDec 2022

General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2022-2023 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles. The front impact bar, a structural portion of the vehicle frame, may not be properly welded to the front frame rail.

Risk: An improperly welded front impact bar may result in the front crash sensors not performing correctly, increasing the risk of injury in a crash.

Fix: Dealers will inspect the right-hand and left-hand side of the vehicle's motor rail for an incomplete weld. If the condition is found, the vehicle will be repurchased by GM. Owner notification letters were mailed January 20, 2023. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020.
