  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Passport that averages well under the EPA 21 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2022 Honda Passport, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Transmission8No crashes

Hesitation and lost drive power make up most reports. The transmission delays upshifts, needs extra throttle to move from a stop, jerks into reverse, and can feel worse in cold weather. Some cars stall or lose power on the highway and in traffic, nearly causing rear-end crashes. One transmission failed outright and dropped into neutral, with a $10,000 repair quote just past warranty. Other reports describe stalling after idle stop, limp mode at highway speed tied to a VCM rocker arm valve, and a cold no-start linked to starter service bulletins. Dealers often find no fault.

  • Electrical6No crashes

The audio system crackles through the front speakers and cuts out completely, sometimes daily, until the unit is switched off. Cold-weather no-starts blamed on a frozen starter also appear. Complaints cite Honda bulletin 23-023 and say a new battery or a jump start does not help. Headlight condensation is covered by bulletin 23-024. One case appeared at 38000 miles, just outside warranty, with a $1400.00 repair quote. Less common reports include a hard brake pedal that blocks push-button starting and a stall while slowing for a light.

  • Automatic emergency braking5No crashes

False automatic braking is the core complaint. The system brakes for oncoming cars on two-lane roads, on gentle curves, and with nothing ahead, at speeds from 30 to 75 mph. Drivers describe near rear-end collisions and following cars having to swerve. A road departure mitigation error can also cancel cruise control and slow the car. On curves, a brake warning and beeping may appear while the steering wheel jiggles. Dealer responses range from refusing repairs to replacing the front sensors and cameras, and even that did not fully cure the problem.

  • Brakes5No crashes

Two separate problems show up here. Phantom automatic braking slams on the brakes with no traffic ahead, on curves as oncoming cars approach, or because of a shadow, at both city and highway speeds. That creates a real rear-end crash risk. There are also hydraulic faults at very low mileage. In one, the pedal sinks to the floor and the car creeps forward at a light, fixed with a new master cylinder and VSA modulator. In another, a squeaking pedal was traced to pins missing from the master cylinder. One braking report actually concerns a Pilot.

  • Acceleration and cruise control3No crashes

Sudden power loss is the main pattern. The car stops responding to the accelerator and either tops out around 40 mph or slows sharply from highway speed, sometimes with cruise control on. Restarting can clear it, but it may come back. The most serious report describes a seized engine after a lifter failed, requiring a full engine replacement with no dealer help. In another case, a sensor bolt backed out at 70 mph. That disabled the safety features and threw off the speed reading until the part was reinstalled.

  • Backup camera2No crashes

Both complaints concern a recall repair, not a failure on the road. Federal recall campaign 23V431000 covers the back over prevention system. Dealers could not schedule the fix because parts were not available. One dealer estimated a wait of 90 days, longer than the 60 days owners say the law allows. Neither report describes the system actually failing. The issue is a parts shortage and repair delays.

  • Steering2No crashes

Free play and a loose feel develop over time. One report describes loose handling and a pull to the right at 20000 miles. Another describes a clanking gap before the tires respond at 62,000 miles, most noticeable when parked or below 30 mph. A mechanic blamed the rack and pinion and warned it could lead to loss of control and a crash. Dealers either found nothing wrong or declined to fix it, in one case because the car is a 2022 rather than a 2023.

  • Body and structure2No crashes

Water intrusion and a faulty door latch are the two issues. A leaking body seam let water under the driver's seat, where it froze the parking brake cables and kept the car from moving in freezing weather. The problem returned the next winter. The dealer said it pointed to either a major collision or a defect. A separate complaint reports a rear passenger door that will not open from inside, which could trap a passenger, often a child, in an emergency.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Passport owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Transmission
Was driving at highway speed on the Garden State Parkway when the vehicle went into limp mode and many errors codes appeared. Was barely able to get on the shoulder then limp to a parking lot at an exit. Car had to be towed to the dealer where it is in the process of having a rocker arm spooler valve replaced that controls the VCM in the bank one cylinders. This created an extremely unsafe condition that nearly caused me to have a high speed accident

Filed with NHTSA, March 2024

Transmission
Vehicle has a delayed response to accelerate as if the transmission doesn’t want to shift or missing the next up shift. Starting from a stop position you have to press further down on the accelerator to get the vehicle to move which could lead you to accident either hit someone in front of you cause the vehicle lurched forward or possibly hit from the side or rear cause the vehicle won’t accelerate

Filed with NHTSA, October 2023

Electrical
When I press the brake pedal to start the car (sometimes) it will no go down it is hard. Have to do this 5 times to get the car to start. this has happened numerous time. I brought it to the dealer and they did not find anything wrong 2 or 3 times. I have changed the battery and tried the spare key fob. They both do it.

Filed with NHTSA, July 2023

Electrical
Upon buying my Honda Passport 11/28/2023, I have been experiencing problems with the radio/electrical connections in my vehicle. There are times I have crackling noises in front speakers and a complete failure of sound altogether. Daily stop and start in the sound system with blank moments and complete sound loses.

Filed with NHTSA, January 2024

Automatic emergency braking
Vehicle intermittently applies front collision system braking on curves and on highway. It is vary unsafe and have almost been rear ended multiple times due to front collisions system engaging and applying brakes. Vehicle front collision system applies brakes randomly and with no vehicles or obstacles in site. This happens during various speeds anywhere from 30- 50mph in city and 60-75mph on highways. ( car is unpredictable and unsafe)

Filed with NHTSA, November 2022

Automatic emergency braking
“Road departure mitigation system problem” is the error that comes up on the dash. The error shuts down cruise control and slows the car down unexpectedly. I’ve taken the vehicle to the Honda dealer in Tampa Florida where I purchased it and they will not fix the vehicle. The error is a safety issue slowing the vehicle down in traffic and a driver distraction triggered by the Collision Mitigation System and Roadway Departure System.

Filed with NHTSA, August 2025

Brakes
Vehicle has slammed on the brakes multiple times now one on the highway going 60mph and in the city 35mph. Today on a open 2 lane city road, and shadow on the road with no vehicles in site slammed on the auto brakes with a collision warning while the wife was driving slowed the vehicle down. Would of been easily rear ended if a vehicle was behind in our 2022 Honda Pilot, not a Passport listed for our VIN# your system is showing.

Filed with NHTSA, March 2022

Brakes
When driving the auto breaking is applied. The warning system flashes on the dash and the breaks are applied, there are no cars around me at the time. The system will also activate at times when going around a curve and a vehicle is approaching from the opposite direction.

Recalls to confirm (3)

Recall repairs are free at any Honda dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 23V458000BrakesJun 2023

Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2020-2021 Civic, 2020-2023 Ridgeline, 2021-2023 Passport, 2021-2022 Pilot, and 2020 Acura MDX vehicles. The tie rod fastener that connects the brake booster and the brake master cylinder may have been improperly assembled during manufacturing, which can cause the brake master cylinder to separate from the booster assembly.

Risk: Brake master cylinder separation can cause a loss of brake function and increase the risk of a crash.

Fix: Dealers will inspect and repair the brake booster assembly as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed August 7, 2023. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's numbers for this recall are VEU, AEV, and ZET.

  2. 23V431000Backup cameraJun 2023

Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2018-2023 Odyssey, 2019-2022 Pilot, and 2019-2023 Passport vehicles. Due to a faulty Media Oriented Systems Transport (MOST) communication coaxial cable connector, the rearview camera image may not appear on the display. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, "Rear Visibility.".

Risk: A rearview camera that does not display an image can reduce the driver's rear view, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.

Fix: Dealers will replace the MOST cable harness and install a straightening cover over the vehicle cable connector, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 24, 2023. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's numbers for this recall are EEL, ZEM, and SFC.

  3. 23V174000Wipers and visibilityMar 2023

Honda (American Honda Motor Co) is recalling certain 2020-2021 Pilot and Ridgeline, and 2020-2022 Passport and Odyssey vehicles. The heating pads behind both side-view mirrors may not be bonded properly, allowing the mirror glass to detach. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, "Rear Visibility.".

Risk: Detached mirror glass can reduce driver visibility, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Dealers will replace both left and right side-view mirrors, free of charge. Owner letters were mailed January 17, 2024. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's number for this recall is FE5.
