Worth adding to your 2022 checks

  • Accelerate gently through 25 to 35 mph and watch for slipping, sudden drops to neutral, or a delayed lunge.
  • Let auto stop shut off the engine at a light and feel for lurching or bucking when it restarts.
  • Ask for service records showing any fuel pump or fuel pump control module diagnosis or replacement.

Which Envision is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2022 Buick Envision. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating

  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Envision that averages well under the EPA 25 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2022 Buick Envision, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical5No crashes

The instrument cluster goes black or shows a service warning while the car keeps running. That takes out the speedometer, warning lights, chimes, and gear display. One cluster failure followed a software update, and a later dealer update did not fix it. Service Safety Restraint System alerts also appear, and in one case the cause was a defective panel. Replacement parts for both the cluster and the restraint system were backordered, so cars waited weeks for repair. One report describes the car found running on its own in a garage with no warning light.

  • Engine5No crashes

Hesitation and delayed shifting cause a loss of power, sometimes as the driver speeds up to change lanes or pass. RPM climbs while the car barely moves. Some reports tie this to the auto stop/start feature. In another case the car would not shift out of park at a green light until it had been restarted many times. Squeaking or knocking at shutdown and a whistle under acceleration show up early. One case started around 2,200 miles and was blamed on a turbo hose. Dealers often cannot duplicate the problems.

  • Transmission3No crashes

The engine shuts off unexpectedly while driving, leaving no steering, throttle, brakes, or gear change. Reports blame a faulty OnStar telematics module that drains the battery. In another case a failed fuel pump control module stranded a car in a busy intersection, and it could not be shifted to neutral to push it clear. Driver-assist alerts such as lane departure and forward collision warnings also drop out. Engine squeaking, a coolant smell, and whistling continue even after the turbo hose and then the turbo are replaced, with long dealer stays.

  • Airbags2No crashes

The Service Safety Restraint System warning and airbag light switch on and off many times a day. Chimes and pop-up messages distract the driver. Dealers and OnStar find no stored code and cannot recreate the fault. In one case it began at about 2,400 miles. The other report involves a crash at about 15 mph. The steering wheel airbag deployed, and the wheel emblem caused severe burns to the driver's forearm and wrist. That is the one injury on file for this category.

  • Brakes2No crashes

The brake pedal suddenly needs far more force, and the car takes much longer to stop. In one report the engine also revved as if accelerating while the driver braked from about 40 mph. The driver shifted to neutral to bring the car to a stop. Another failure came with a burst of dashboard error codes. Both are described as intermittent. Dealers say they cannot replicate the problem and send the cars back without a repair.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Envision owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
Service safety restraint message displays. Sunroof, all parts will not function when attempted. Nothing happens. Airbag light indicates "off" Safety is critical in a vehicle and must be reliable and function properly. Vehicle servicer has confirmed the safety restraint issue, but sun roof issue is pending servicers confirmation.

Transmission
The Buick died due to a fuel pump control module. This happened in a busy intersection. We were unable to force car into neutral so it could be pushed out of traffic . Ninth minutes later a tow truck showed up and had to drag car onto roll back. We have exhausted attempts with GM and its dealers and no answers. I also have a 2021 Gmc pickup with push button start and same problem. This is a major safety problem and a danger to driver and passenger .

Airbags
Service Safety Restraint System warning and Airbag light comes on and off multiple times a day. Onstar and Dealer state they cannot recreate issue or find a code. I have pictures of the warning. It is very distracting when driving and warning bells are sounding and messages are popping up that take my eyes off the road. This vehicle has ~2500 miles and began at ~2400 miles.

Complaints for this year next to the average for the other model years, area by area.

The 2022 is tied for the most owner complaints of the 8 Envision years we cover, about 1.5 times the average of the others. Newer years have had less time to collect complaints, so compare like with like.

Where the 2022 fits in the Envision's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2022 is the second model year of the Envision's second generation (2021–2023).

Buick updated the Envision for 2024, so a 2022 does not have those changes.

What changed for 2024 (not on a 2022)

  • Front design changes
  • New dashboard-mounted digital displays

General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2020-2023 Cadillac CT4 and CT5; 2021-2023 Buick Envision; and 2022-2023 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Suburban, Tahoe, GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, and Yukon XL vehicles. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment.".

Risk: DRLs that do not deactivate as intended may result in a glare, reducing visibility, and increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: The body control module software will be updated by a dealer, or through an over-the-air (OTA) update, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed January 23, 2023.
