Which EcoSport is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2021 Ford EcoSport. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 1.0L 3-cyl | FWD | 28 mpg |
| 2.0L 4-cyl | AWD | 25 mpg |
- The 2021 Ford EcoSport was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A EcoSport that averages well under the EPA 25 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.
Check the odometer against these mileages
Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2021 Ford EcoSport, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Engine1781 crash
Sudden engine failure is the main pattern. Reports describe a low oil pressure light, engine tapping, white smoke, overheating, or a loss of power, then a stall or seized engine and a dealer verdict that the engine needs replacing. Several dealers point to a failed oil pump drive belt tensioner, and some owners report repeat failures after repair. Failures are reported around 56,000 to 60,000 miles. Many filings are about recall repairs on hold because parts are unavailable, with some cars sitting at dealers for months. One crash report describes the car failing to stop in a driveway.
Sudden failure with little warning is the main theme. Reports describe stalling, low oil pressure, a burning oil smell, and metal in the oil, and dealers often blame a failed oil pump. A separate group reports coolant leaking into the engine before 10,000 miles, with replacement quotes of almost $9,000 to $10k. Other failures appear around 66,000 to 75,000 miles. Many filings describe long waits for recall parts and no loaner car. Some owners report overheating, shaking, stalling, or shredded belt debris after recall engine work.
Transmission271 crash
Sudden loss of power is the most serious complaint, sometimes with a loud grinding noise in the middle of an intersection or a low oil pressure warning on the highway. Transmission reports include slipping, delayed shifts, the car moving backward while in drive, and a lockup at 10,000 miles. One crash report describes the car slipping out of gear and rolling down a driveway. Other reports cover a failing turbocharger near 40,000 miles, a failing alternator near 45,000, engine seizure, and repeat shutdowns after recall engine work.
Electrical111 crash
Engines shut off while driving and take power steering with them, often on highways, and some owners report it happening repeatedly. One report describes black smoke, a fire, and a driver door that would not open, with a minor injury. Another describes a fatal crash after the car stopped moving on a major road. Other patterns include false coolant over-temperature warnings that put the car in limp mode, hard starts after refueling, and traction control warnings near 30,000 miles. Several problems began right after recall engine replacements.
Brakes51 crash
Brakes stop working without warning in a few reports. One describes the pedal and parking brake both failing at low speed, ending in a rear-end crash. Another describes brakes releasing at a traffic light and then working again. One car rolled while in drive with the brake pedal pressed. The rest of the filings concern engine problems, such as a harsh restart and stall from auto start-stop, a fractured oil pump belt tensioner arm, and long waits for recall parts.
Steering5No crashes
Engine stalls, not faults in the steering itself, drive these complaints. The engine shuts off or drops into limp mode on highways and exit ramps, leaving the car without power steering or brake assist. One report includes an injury. A low oil pressure warning comes before the stall in some cases. Several owners report the same failure returning soon after recall work, and one describes a dealer keeping the car for 11 months. Some owners went months without a rental while they waited.
Airbags21 crash
Airbags may not work when needed. In one report, the airbags did not deploy when a much faster vehicle hit the car from behind on the highway, and the driver was injured. In another, the airbag warning light was on at purchase, the selling dealer dismissed it, and a Ford dealer later found the airbags inoperable. With only two filings, there is no wider pattern yet, but both reports point to a safety system that was not working.
Suspension2No crashes
Broken or worn parts show up in only two reports. In one, a rear cross arm snapped with no warning, which tilted the wheel and made the car undrivable until it was towed. In the other, front suspension parts and wheel bearings needed replacement, and the car vibrated heavily and made loud noises. That owner also lists transmission, engine, tire, sensor, and brake light failures. With so few complaints, these are isolated reports, not a confirmed trend.
Fuel system2No crashes
Power cuts out suddenly in traffic, and one report describes losing all power on a busy beltway with a truck close behind. A low oil pressure light that turns on and off, along with a new engine noise, comes before a breakdown within minutes in another filing. Both cars had to be towed. The dealer told one owner the car needed a new engine but had no loaner, and that owner complained that recall parts were still not available.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints EcoSport owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
Check engine light came on at 24k miles. Alert on Ford Pass app said the engine wasn't heating up to operating temperature fast enough. Had a second Alert come up the next time I drove the car saying there was an electrical issue in the vehicle causing anti lock breaks and other important driver assistance features to not work including traction control.
Filed with NHTSA, December 2023
The vehicle locked up and would't move at 10,000 miles. We were lucky that the car was in someone's driveway instead of on the road. The vehicle was new at the time of purchase. I have a relative who is an auto technician and he said that he has experienced this problem with Ford transmissions many times.
Filed with NHTSA, February 2023
On 7/18/2023, this vehicle was involved in a fatal crash. The vehicle stopped moving and would not proceed forward after stopping major roadway. A motorcycle struck the vehicle from behind and the two occupants were killed. The owner of the vehicle contacted the dealership where she bought it from on 7/1/2023, in which they did not locate the issue. The owner of the vehicle said that the issue has happened numerous times before the crash occurred.
Filed with NHTSA, August 2023
Faulty sensors that appeared to have been fixed with more faulty sensors. The car's sensors result in the car thinking it is in park, locking up the wheel, and losing some of the drive assist and controls.
Filed with NHTSA, November 2022
My brakes let go while I was stopped at a traffic light almost causing me to rear end the car in front of me. Luckily the light turned green and the car in front of me moved before I ran into them. Went to try pull off the road to check what was going on and my brakes started working again. This incident put myself and others at risk.

Recall repairs are free at any Ford dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.
25V442000Backup cameraJun 2025
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2018-2022 Transit Connect, 2019-2020 MKZ, MKX, Edge, Continental, F-150, Nautilus, Fusion, 2019-2023 Ranger, Mustang, 2020-2021 EcoSport, Expedition, Navigator, 2020-2022 Escape, F-250 SD, Corsair, 2020-2023 Aviator, Transit, 2020-2024 Explorer, 2021-2024 Bronco Sport, and 2022-2024 Maverick vehicles. A software error may cause the rearview camera to display a blank image, or the image may remain on the display after the backing event has ended.
Risk: A rearview camera that displays a blank image can reduce the driver's view behind the vehicle. A rearview image that continues to be displayed after the vehicle is shifted out of reverse may distract the driver. Both of these situations can increase the risk of a crash.
Fix: Dealers will update the rearview camera software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed September 4, 2025. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 25S72.
25V126000TransmissionFeb 2025
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2021-2022 EcoSport vehicles. The front axle half shafts may disconnect from the transmission, which can result in a loss of drive power.
Risk: A loss of drive power increases the risk of a crash. In addition, a disconnected half shaft can result in a vehicle rollaway if the parking brake is not applied, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.
Fix: Dealers will inspect and replace the half shafts as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on May 29, 2025. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 25S12.
23V905000EngineDec 2023
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2016-2018 Ford Focus and 2018-2022 Ford EcoSport vehicles. The oil pump drive belt or drive belt tensioner may fail, resulting in a loss of engine oil pressure.
Risk: A loss of oil pressure can result in an engine stall and a loss of power braking assist, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: Dealers will replace the oil pump tensioner assembly and oil pump drive belt, free of charge. If engine failure occurs due to a damaged oil pump belt and/or oil pump belt tensioner, Ford has authorized dealers to replace the engine assembly as an interim repair before the availability of remedy parts for the final repair. This repair will be free of charge (parts and labor). Owner notification letters were mailed August 11, 2025. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 23S64.
