Which Trailblazer is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
1.2L 3-cylFWD29 mpg
1.3L 3-cylAWD, FWD28–31 mpg
  • The 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Trailblazer that averages well under the EPA 28 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Transmission351 crash

Most reports involve the shifter not registering Park. The "Shift to Park" or "Vehicle Not in Park" message stays on, the engine keeps running, and the doors will not lock. On cars with a traditional key, the key can stick in the ignition. Dealers usually replace the shifter assembly, with failures reported around 35,000 to 40,000 miles. A second group describes transmission trouble: slow engagement into Drive, sudden loss of power, and stalling in traffic. Some reports describe reduced engine power traced to the turbo. One report describes a fire after a deer strike.

  • Electrical321 crash

The "Shift to Park" fault shows up here too. The car stays in accessory mode, drains the battery, and sometimes fails to detect the key or shuts off while driving. Infotainment and OnStar module failures take out the radio and backup camera. An amplifier failure can silence the collision warning chime. Other reports describe a sudden loss of electronic brake assist with traction control and lane-keep warnings, stalling with a "Engine Power is Reduced" message, and repeated failures of the starter, alternator, and fuse box. One car caught fire after a collision.

  • Engine20No crashes

The most common complaint is a check engine light with a "reduced engine power" warning that limits acceleration on the highway. Shops trace it to the turbocharger or wastegate, with reports between 47,000 and 90,000 miles, and some cars keep the fault after the repair. Coolant control valve failures cause overheating and a fan that runs after shutdown. Evap purge pump codes (P1467) appear, and one car shut off at highway speed. Further reports describe fuel pump failure, catastrophic engine failure, an exhaust that came loose, and a fire with no warning lights.

  • Brakes182 crashes

Loud squealing at low speed and in reverse is the most frequent complaint, and it often starts within days of delivery. Dealers tend to call it normal and decline to fix it. More serious reports describe brake failure messages, a pedal that sinks to the floor, ABS and StabiliTrak warnings, and brakes that need full force until the car is restarted. One car showed a warning that speed was limited to 53 mph. Two crashes with three injuries are reported, including one where automatic emergency braking did not activate.

  • Body and structure7No crashes

Water gets into the cabin. Owners describe water in all four door panels, standing water in the spare tire well, and wet rear seats growing mold. One dealer called the door-panel leak common, at 23,520 miles. The panoramic moonroof can shatter at freeway speed with a gunshot-like bang. A power liftgate that opens and closes by itself struck one owner on the head. Other reports include peeling hood paint, missing fender clips, and a loose front bumper.

  • Steering61 crash

A "Service Power Steering" warning tends to appear together with brake failure or ABS alerts, after which the brakes need much more pedal force. In one crash the car would not turn or slow, ran through an intersection, and ended up in a snowbank. Another car had these warnings at only 160 miles. Some cars show the light on and off without other symptoms. Other reports describe reduced speed and repeated misdiagnosis, with fuel injectors replaced before the turbocharger was blamed.

  • Fuel system5No crashes

A leaking fuel rail causes a strong gasoline smell under the hood, and the fumes reach the cabin. Mechanics have called the car unsafe to drive because of fire risk. Leaks appear just past the warranty, with one report at 29,000 miles, and owners quote repairs of about $2000 to $3k. One leak returned months after the dealer repair. Other owners report an evap purge pump code (P1467) along with fuel or engine smells inside the car.

  • Acceleration and cruise control31 crash

Sudden unintended acceleration is the main concern. One car surged while parking at 5 mph, jumped a median, and hit a building, causing an injury. Another surged from 50 to about 80 mph several times and only stopped after being shut off. Dealers report finding no fault. A separate report describes cruise control and auto start not working, with codes P0700 and P1467.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Trailblazer owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Transmission
At 44 K miles, my car started giving me a message "Shift in to park" after I stopped my car and turned off the motor. I was unable to essentially shut my engine off and leave my vehicle. I called the GMC shop, where they diagnosed it as faulty wiring. It is not under warranty, therefore I will encure the cost which is not a normal item to go out on a vehicle. Also, our 22 Trailblazer is also giving us this same message.

Transmission
The Turbo is bad in the car at 90,000 miles. It is a common issue among these, lots of other people have the same issue with the “engine power is reduced” message popping up, per the 2021 Chevrolet TrailBlazer facebook group. There needs to be a recall so they can be fixed. It has happened on mine for the past few months and the dealer said the turbo is bad. The purge pump has already been replaced.

ElectricalCrash reported
Was in the middle of a 3 car collision. After about 5 min engine started smoking and a fire started. Fire slowly escalated and fully engulfed the entire car.

Filed with NHTSA, September 2021

Electrical
My 2021 chevy trailblazer rs is experiencing issues with the infotainment system and the onstar module they have stopped working and I have no backup camera and this issue is a safety concern to me and anyone who rides with me i have contacted both gm and onstar and got nowhere with them after I had a diagnostic test done on 6/18/26 they recommended replacement of the whole system

Filed with NHTSA, June 2026

Engine
Whenever I accelerate over 65 miles per hour the engine and transmission light comes on and the car goes into reduced engine speed. I get a message to service my engine I took it to the dealership, they could not figure out the problem because the engine light only stays on for a day or so and then goes out again. This issue has been happening more frequently over the last few weeks.

Filed with NHTSA, March 2024

Engine
I was driving an hour away from home and suddenly my muffler and exhaust started dragging— 49,000 miles, 5 years old AND just passed inspection A WEEK AGO. Luckily, it didn’t become completely unattached because that could have caused an accident as there were cars behind me. Complete safety hazard

Filed with NHTSA, March 2026

Brakes
I have brought my car into the dealership over the last few years at least 6 times for the same issues. Currently there are two codes coming up as permanent on my car which is for the Evaporative Emission System Flow and Brake Booster Hydraulics performance. I drive my child of three every day and the number of times my check engine light comes on and goes into reduced engine power is not okay nor safe.

Filed with NHTSA, December 2024

Brakes
The brakes make squealing sound when coming to a stop. the dealer has acknowledged the problem and said there is nothing they can do about it and that the problem is normal. It is not normal for brakes to squeak every time the car stops.

How the 2021 compares with other Trailblazer years

Complaints for this year next to the average for the other model years, area by area.

The 2021 has the most owner complaints of the 6 Trailblazer years we cover, about 4.2 times the average of the others. Newer years have had less time to collect complaints, so compare like with like.

Where the 2021 fits in the Trailblazer's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2021 is the first model year of the Trailblazer's first generation (2021 on). First years of a redesign often carry teething problems that Chevrolet fixes in later years, so the checks above matter more than usual.

Chevrolet updated the Trailblazer for 2024, so a 2021 does not have those changes.

What changed for 2024 (not on a 2021)

  • New front fascia design
  • New running lights
  • New LED taillights
  • New exterior colors
  • New wheel designs
  • 11-inch touchscreen infotainment system

Should you avoid the first year of a redesign? See the 45-car study.
