Check the odometer against these mileages
Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.
Early transmission failure
6,000–17,700 miles
Oil burning, stalling, engine damage
38,967–75,400 miles
Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2021 Kia Seltos, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Engine1841 crash
Oil disappears between changes, often until the dipstick reads dry, and the engine then stalls, shakes, misfires, or loses power, frequently at highway speed. Owners describe piston noise codes, white smoke, an oil smell, and dealers calling for a new engine. Most failures land between about 38,967 and 94,000 miles. One filing describes an engine fire after a stall, and another describes an injury after a sudden stall at highway speed. Many say the car passed a dealer recall inspection but kept burning oil. Others were refused coverage over missing oil change records or an expired warranty.
Engines run low on oil, knock, and then stall or seize, sometimes in traffic and sometimes with no warning light. Two filings describe smoke or a banging noise followed by an engine fire. Most reports center on a recall repair that dealers could not perform because parts were not available. While waiting, owners keep adding oil or park the car. Some cars stalled repeatedly when slowing down. Others were refused an engine replacement because the owners lacked oil change records. One high-mileage report describes overheating and power loss that new spark plugs and coils did not fix.
Transmission61No crashes
Transmissions fail on some very young cars, with complete replacements reported at 6,000 and 17,700 miles after surging, warning lights, and lost reverse. Higher-mileage cars shudder into limp mode, shift poorly, or grind and clunk up front when pulling away or turning, starting around 40,000 miles. The other main pattern is oil burning, with stalls and empty dipsticks and no visible leaks. Owners report that cars passed recall testing even as consumption went on, and some say they were denied a new engine. Several have been stranded more than once.
Electrical361 crash
The car shuts off while driving, often with the check engine, battery, and oil lights coming on together, and owners describe losing throttle and brake response. One filing reports a highway shutdown that ended in a crash with an injury. Another describes smoke filling the cabin with an electrical smell. Separate complaints cover batteries that go dead from an untraced drain, stop/start restarts that reset the whole electrical system, limp mode with driver-assist warnings lit, a frozen or unresponsive infotainment screen, and a dead horn. Some stalls occurred on cars with fewer than 900 miles.
Airbags55 crashes
Airbags do not deploy in hard collisions. All 5 complaints involve crashes, and two people were injured. Reports include a T-bone crash at about 50 mph that totaled the car, deer strikes at 60 mph that caused heavy front-end damage, and a side impact from a large water tank where the side airbag stayed stowed. Two owners also say the forward collision warning gave no alert before hitting a deer. One report notes the warning light came on only after the impact.
Acceleration and cruise control42 crashes
The car accelerates on its own with the brake pressed, or while shifting from reverse to drive. Two of these events ended in crashes with injuries, one into a tree and one into a parked car. Another owner reports the problem happening again while the car was being moved at a repair shop. Other filings describe surging and then a total loss of acceleration that led to a new transmission at 3000 miles, and a sudden stall with no brake response. In that case the driver had to use the parking brake while the charging, oil pressure, and check engine lights were on.
Steering4No crashes
None of these reports describe a fault in the steering itself. Instead they describe the engine stalling at highway speed or at stops, sometimes with a clunk. Other complaints mention every warning light coming on before the car shuts off, the speedometer dropping to zero at highway speed, and the car getting stuck in park. One owner says the dealer replaced the battery but the stalling continued. Another reports the car was stolen quickly even with a steering wheel lock fitted, and blames weak theft protection.
Fuel system4No crashes
Sputtering and shutoffs leave cars stranded, and some will not restart. In one case the eventual repair was a new fuel injector, and the mechanic reported cylinder scoring. Other owners smell gasoline in and around the car and need a new fuel pump and seals. Some have a check engine light that keeps returning after oxygen sensor and spark plug replacements. One filing describes the transmission hesitating and shuddering at low speeds, especially in turns, and overheating in stop-and-go traffic.
Seat belts4No crashes
Buckles and warnings misbehave. The front passenger buckle is hard to latch and may come undone by itself. Some owners say the seat belt warning flashes and beeps while the belt is fastened, and unbuckling does not always clear it. In the back seat, the belt can catch in the backrest latch when the seat is folded down and raised again, which damages the belt. One owner in this group also reports the forward collision system braking hard on the highway with no cars nearby.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Seltos owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
Two times in the last week, my engine shut off/stalled while driving in traffic. The check engine, battery and oil lights came on because the key was still turned. I had no other warning, I just couldn’t accelerate and had to coast to safety. Both times I was able to safely pull over and turn the key to restart the car and get home. I am currently at 63k miles and just got an oil change. My last oil change was in March 2024 at 58k miles.

My kia seltos 2021 is 47k miles and all ready have a issues whit a misfire on piston at position 4 this is the 2.0 L version and I call the dealership for see what is the problem because I notice that when is time for oil change it comes only with 4 quarters of dirty oil. And also when star the vehicle in the morning for go to work, it make a strange sound. I hope is nothing bad but kia needs to fix this problem with the engines.

Shuddered into limp mode at a stop sign. Has a sever shudder that throws it into limp mode, loses ability to drive in reverse and then loses ability to drive at all. Has issues shifting gears while driving causing the engine to rev itself while driving. Vehicle has left me stranded on multiple occasions. Has nearly 75,000 miles and I've put just over 4,000 of those on it since acquiring it at the end of October/Beginning of November.

My kia engine light came on during a drive and the vehicle would not shift gears (it would stay stuck on 1st). I manage to park and realize that it was not shifting to reverse either. I check the temperature and it was 4 lines below the middle which is normal. My car has proper maintenance and just came out of the 30,000 miles maintenance and is less than 3 years old.

Odometer Fraud. The contact stated that the used car dealer had provided a 2021 Kia Seltos loaner vehicle to the contact while the contact's vehicle was being serviced. The contact stated that the loaner vehicle was returned to the used car dealer for service with an odometer reading of 111,000 miles; however, after the loaner vehicle was returned to the contact, the odometer reading was 69,014. The VIN was not available.

The entire electrical system (display, gauges, exterior lights, etc.) resets while driving. This may be a one off or may happen several times in a few minutes. The engine never stops running, which is good as this happened in the interstate. In the dark, this could be dangerous as the headlights and taillights go out for a moment. I am not aware if this is easily replicated or if this poses issues to other systems.
Filed with NHTSA, December 2021
I was traveling at approximately 50mph straight through an intersection. The opposing car made a left turn directly in front of me and I T-boned the other vehicle (gray Kia Optima). There was sufficient front end damage that my car was totaled. The airbags on my vehicle failed to deploy.
Filed with NHTSA, October 2025
A deer was hit at 60mph with frontal impact. The collision warning did not alarm, however after the collision, the light was illuminated. The airbags did not deploy. The front end damage was estimated at nearly $11,000 but no airbags deployed with this high rate of speed and impact.

Where the 2021 fits in the Seltos's history
Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.
The 2021 is the first model year of the Seltos's first generation (2021–2026). First years of a redesign often carry teething problems that Kia fixes in later years, so the checks above matter more than usual.
Kia updated the Seltos for 2022, so a 2021 does not have those changes.
What changed for 2022 (not on a 2021)
