Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2022 Ford EcoSport, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Airbags21 crash

Nothing deploys when the car is hit on the passenger side in the one crash-related report, and the occupant needs hospital care and repeated doctor visits. No warning light or other symptom shows up before the collision. The other complaint describes the restraints indicator lamp coming on with less than 3,000 miles on the car. With only 2 complaints on file, no wider pattern is visible. Still, a restraint system that stays silent in a side crash is a serious injury risk.

  • Engine2No crashes

Power drops out without warning, and the car briefly refuses to accelerate, as if it were running out of fuel. It happens in reverse, pulling away from stops, merging onto the freeway, and cruising at highway speed. Pressing harder on the gas sometimes pushes through the stumble and sometimes does not, which is a real hazard in traffic. A separate complaint involves a check engine light traced to a cracked catalytic converter at about 34,835 miles, left unrepaired. Only 2 complaints are on file.

  • Body and structure2No crashes

Body parts come loose or open while the car is moving. The left roof rail trim detaches at speed and becomes debris for following traffic, while the right side starts lifting too. Separately, the swing gate ajar light comes on and the rear swing gate pops partly open on the road, forcing the driver to pull over and shut it. A dealer declines to fix the trim, and two dealerships cannot reproduce the gate fault. Neither problem gives any warning before it happens.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints EcoSport owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Body and structure
The swing gate ajar light comes on and the swing gate opens slightly (doesn’t fully open) while driving. This causes me to pull off the road and open, then close the door. This has happened while driving on the expressway and late at night which causes a safety concern. I have brought it to 2 different dealerships, but neither was able to reproduce it. There is no warning or reason this happens. It just random.

Recalls to confirm (2)

Recall repairs are free at any Ford dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 25V126000TransmissionFeb 2025

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2021-2022 EcoSport vehicles. The front axle half shafts may disconnect from the transmission, which can result in a loss of drive power.

Risk: A loss of drive power increases the risk of a crash. In addition, a disconnected half shaft can result in a vehicle rollaway if the parking brake is not applied, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.

Fix: Dealers will inspect and replace the half shafts as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on May 29, 2025. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 25S12.

  2. 23V905000EngineDec 2023

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2016-2018 Ford Focus and 2018-2022 Ford EcoSport vehicles. The oil pump drive belt or drive belt tensioner may fail, resulting in a loss of engine oil pressure.

Risk: A loss of oil pressure can result in an engine stall and a loss of power braking assist, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Dealers will replace the oil pump tensioner assembly and oil pump drive belt, free of charge. If engine failure occurs due to a damaged oil pump belt and/or oil pump belt tensioner, Ford has authorized dealers to replace the engine assembly as an interim repair before the availability of remedy parts for the final repair. This repair will be free of charge (parts and labor). Owner notification letters were mailed August 11, 2025. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332.
