Which EcoSport is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2018 Ford EcoSport. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 1.0L 3-cyl | FWD | 28 mpg |
| 2.0L 4-cyl | AWD | 25 mpg |
- The 2018 Ford EcoSport was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A EcoSport that averages well under the EPA 25 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.
Check the odometer against these mileages
Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.
Low oil pressure engine failure
49,000–77,301 miles
Brake loss during engine stall
65,000–77,301 miles
Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2018 Ford EcoSport, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Engine5302 crashes
Loss of power and stalling run through this category, often with a low oil pressure warning or a wrench light. Most excerpts, though, describe owners who hold a recall notice but cannot get the repair because the part is unavailable. Several say the wait has gone on too long. Other reports describe turbocharger failure or underboost, a car that will not go past 30 MPH, and grinding from the front, including after a recall repair was done. One complaint ties a stall during a turn to a crash that caused injury.
Sudden engine shutdown at speed dominates these reports. It usually follows a low oil pressure warning, even when the oil level is full. Dealers often call for a full engine replacement. Owners cite failed oil pump belts or tensioners, metal in the oil, and seized engines, mostly between 49,000 and 73,000 miles. Many describe waiting months for parts or engines. One complaint reports a crash into a tree after a stall. Another reports an engine fire minutes after the oil pressure light came on. Coolant leaking into the cylinders and a cracked flex plate also appear.
Transmission603 crashes
Highway power loss shows up here too. A low oil pressure warning appears, then rattling or grinding, a sharp drop in speed, and a stall that ends in a tow and a new engine. Some owners report limp mode and turbo underboost codes after a recall repair. Transmission failures with bucking and jerking also appear, including one at 70,000 miles. Three crashes are on file: a guard rail strike after reduced power, a parked car rolling downhill into a tree, and a brake failure collision with three people injured.
Electrical242 crashes
Stalling is the most serious pattern. The auto stop-start shuts the engine off at lights and it fails to restart, and one stall on an off-ramp led to a crash that deployed the airbags. Owners also describe power loss while merging, misfires that needed new ignition coils and plugs again and again, and engine shutdown after a low oil pressure warning. The rest are screen faults: the instrument cluster goes dark, and the backup camera, radio, and USB freeze or go black. One dealer traced the dead screen to the APIM module.
Brakes134 crashes
The brake pedal goes hard, sinks to the floor, or stops slowing the car, often right as the engine loses oil pressure and stalls. These reports cluster between 65,000 and 77,301 miles, and some drivers had to use the parking brake to stop. Four complaints involve crashes. Two describe a brake pedal that broke, with the driver's foot going through it. Separately, one owner reports a loud squeal in reverse that three dealer repair attempts did not fix.
Acceleration and cruise control111 crash
Acceleration fades after a low oil pressure warning, and most of these cases end in an engine replacement. At least one report also mentions a stiff brake pedal. Several owners describe open recalls with no parts available, no loaner cars, and cars left at dealers for months. Other complaints cover an auto stop-start fault linked to a crash and a gas pedal stuck to the floor on the highway. Owners also report a dashboard that goes dark in the sun and a broken air duct that buzzes under throttle.
Wheels and tires9No crashes
Swollen lug nuts are the clear pattern. The two-piece nuts swell until a standard wrench will not fit, so changing a tire by the road becomes hard or impossible. Shops often recommend replacing the whole set at the owner's cost, and one owner quotes a $195.00 charge. Owners also worry that damaged nuts could loosen. A separate complaint describes two sidewall blowouts on the original tires after a pothole and a light curb strike. That car had no spare, and the sealant kit did not seal the hole.
Airbags85 crashes
Airbags that stay folded in serious crashes are the central concern. Five complaints involve crashes and three record injuries. They include totaled cars where the side, curtain, or steering wheel airbags stayed off and only a lower airbag deployed. Another crash report describes the car surging forward while parking. Separate complaints describe the airbag warning light staying on for months, often with a check engine light that never goes off.
Fuel system6No crashes
Sudden power loss on the highway leads these few reports. One car dropped from 75 to 40 MPH because of a broken throttle body. Another stalled or struggled to start after refueling, with code P0496. Two owners report low oil pressure warnings. One of them heard rattling, and a mechanic pointed to the high pressure fuel pump drive unit. Another owner is on a second replacement engine. One complaint says a recall has been open for over a year and a half with no remedy.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints EcoSport owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
Started with the oil pressure engine light coming on and off always told it's a sensor then 2 days it wasn't putting any oil to one of the rocker arms and told by a dealership that it's going to cost me$7500 for a whole new engine when all they did was their diagnostic test.

The car shut down while driving. The tech explained that the oil pump failed and ruined the engine. The tech also alerted us to this being an issue that the NHTSA was investigating.

2018 EcoSport with 64k miles. After highway travel stopped at a gas station, the vehicle had a low engine oil pressure light turn on while idling... With a fast knock noise. During highway travel there were no signed of any issues. After towing to dealership, we found the OIL SUMP TENSIONER BELT BROKE. Dealership said we need a new motor.

Over 400 power train codes since day that it was purchased. Kept getting run around on issue. Finally was “fixed”. Now a new power train code. Vehicle has reduced power mid drive and has trouble accelerating from a stop. Both issues have almost cause accidents. Car has had several times where vehicle would have a clicking sound when trying to start and has not started at times. Dealership now several months out to repair again.

In July 7, 2023 driving on the highway. My 2018 Ford Ecosport SE had the low oil pressure sensor come while driving 75mph. The car instantly lost power, I couldn’t speed up to move over. My car died and wasn’t able to restart. Upon doing research online I’m seeing there have been MANY of these ecosport issues with 2018 and 2019 models and Ford isn’t recalling or fixing this issue. We the consumer NEEDS HELP!!!

Where the 2018 fits in the EcoSport's history
Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.
The 2018 is the first model year of the EcoSport's second generation (2018–2022). First years of a redesign often carry teething problems that Ford fixes in later years, so the checks above matter more than usual.
It is also the first year of a mid-cycle update.
What changed for 2018
- Revised front end design
- Redesigned rear bumper
- Optional 8-inch floating touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone integration.
Should you avoid the first year of a redesign? See the 45-car study.
Recalls to confirm (2)
Recall repairs are free at any Ford dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.
23V905000EngineDec 2023
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2016-2018 Ford Focus and 2018-2022 Ford EcoSport vehicles. The oil pump drive belt or drive belt tensioner may fail, resulting in a loss of engine oil pressure.
Risk: A loss of oil pressure can result in an engine stall and a loss of power braking assist, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: Dealers will replace the oil pump tensioner assembly and oil pump drive belt, free of charge. If engine failure occurs due to a damaged oil pump belt and/or oil pump belt tensioner, Ford has authorized dealers to replace the engine assembly as an interim repair before the availability of remedy parts for the final repair. This repair will be free of charge (parts and labor). Owner notification letters were mailed August 11, 2025. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 23S64.

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2018 Ford Ecosport vehicles sold in the United States Federal Territiories. These vehicles were shipped with the European brake reservoir pictogram cap label and the European English language owner's manual kits. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 135, "Light Vehicle Brake Systems.".
Risk: Owners could be confused by the incorrect label on the brake fluid cap, potentially causing them to replace the brake fluid with an incorrect fluid which could affect brake performance, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the brake fluid cap and owner's manual kit, free of charge. The recall began on June 21, 2018. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 18C04.
