Which EcoSport is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2019 Ford EcoSport. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
1.0L 3-cylFWD28 mpg
2.0L 4-cylAWD25 mpg
  • The 2019 Ford EcoSport was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A EcoSport that averages well under the EPA 25 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

  • Early power loss, engine failure

    40,000–48,000 miles

  • Oil pressure loss, engine failure

    61,000–73,000 miles

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2019 Ford EcoSport, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Engine3371 crash

Sudden stalling, loss of power and engine failure dominate these reports. The check engine and low oil pressure lights often come on together, followed by knocking, shuddering or a seized engine. Many filings are about a recall campaign. Owners report that parts stay unavailable for long stretches, or that problems return after the recall work is done. Dealers sometimes say a later failure is unrelated to the recall. One stall in an intersection leads to a rear-end crash. Another report describes white smoke, a burning odor and flames from the engine compartment.

The low oil pressure warning appears, power drops, and the engine knocks or quits, often on the highway. Dealers commonly find a failed oil pump belt or tensioner and call for a full engine replacement, quoted at over $6,000. Reported failures cluster between about 61,000 and 73,000 miles, often just past warranty. Owners typically say the oil level was full and maintenance was current. Several say they could not keep up with interstate traffic. A few report the same symptoms coming back after a replacement engine.

  • Transmission441 crash

Power loss and low oil pressure warnings repeat here. Engines get replaced and sometimes fail again, in one case for a fourth time. A second pattern is transmission trouble: shuddering, grinding uphill and surging RPM. Dealers diagnose a torque converter problem or a full transmission replacement. Many filings describe long waits for recall parts and repeat repairs that do not hold. One car stalls, smokes and smolders while driving. Another rolls backward after being shut off on an incline, drags the driver and hits a house.

  • Electrical9No crashes

The infotainment module (APIM) fails, and the touchscreen, radio, Bluetooth, USB ports and backup camera stop working. Dealers quote roughly $3,000 to $4,000 to replace it. Some owners see earlier glitches first: power windows acting up, a compass stuck on north, or Sync 3 updates that fail. The other complaints repeat the engine pattern of low oil pressure warnings, stalling and engine damage. In one case the car shuts off at a stoplight, then stability control cuts out and the driver briefly loses control.

  • Brakes6No crashes

Most of these reports are really engine failures: a low oil pressure warning, then a sudden loss of power. A few owners say the brakes stopped working or seized at the same time, with the check engine, battery and ABS lights on. One dealer replaces the oil pump belt and tensioner but refuses to cover the engine damage that followed. Long waits for parts come up again. One failure is reported at about 55,000 miles.

  • Acceleration and cruise control6No crashes

Speed drops sharply without warning, from highway speed to 30 mph or less, and the car will not accelerate. Owners describe stalling, jerking, hard shifting, and the check engine and wrench lights coming on, sometimes with the screen going black. Some say the problem continues after multiple engine replacements or while recall parts are unavailable. A separate report describes cruise control losing speed at 9,300 miles, which the dealer could not duplicate.

  • Airbags43 crashes

Nothing deploys in three serious crashes, and each one involves an injury. The reports include a T-bone at an intersection, a van striking the passenger side at about 30 mph, and a collision with a semi truck. Two of those vehicles are totaled. The remaining complaint describes a warning light for the airbag sensor that stays on at a little over 44,000 miles.

  • Steering4No crashes

None of these reports describes a clear steering defect. Three are engine failures with a low oil pressure message, weak acceleration and repeated engine replacements. One owner is on a third engine, with coolant now leaking into the head gasket. Another hears a persistent whirring after major repairs. The fourth complaint says the car steers, brakes and changes speed on its own, which the owner blames on hacking. Inspections found nothing wrong.

  • Suspension21 crash

No repeating suspension defect appears. One report describes a severe crash into a pole and rocks that bent the left front control arm and the frame. The air bags did not deploy, and the driver died. The other describes rear tires worn from the inside until they went flat with wires showing, at about 15,000 miles. A dealer blamed improper maintenance.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints EcoSport owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Transmission
2019 ford ecosport with around 48000 miles on it. Driving a trip of 40 miles within 20 miles of the trip the low oil pressure notification comes on. At the same time the car begins to loss power and we pull over to the side of the road. Take the car the the local ford dealership the concluded it was the oil pump and the engine needs to be replaced. Due to national back order I have been out of a car for a month with no eta on when this issue will be fixed.

Electrical
After a few near death experiences and being stranded several times, my 2019 Ford EcoSport has had a new Sync 3 system, EVAP, and 2 “new” engines. And it’s still not functioning properly. (Was shooting out black smoke, jerking, stalling, screen blackout.) Jerking and the screen blacks out. But according to Ford, it’s ok to drive. Might be the transmission -after a complete diagnostic test and test drive. The car cuts off (not from the start/stop feature).

Recalls to confirm (2)

Recall repairs are free at any Ford dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 23V905000EngineDec 2023

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2016-2018 Ford Focus and 2018-2022 Ford EcoSport vehicles. The oil pump drive belt or drive belt tensioner may fail, resulting in a loss of engine oil pressure.

Risk: A loss of oil pressure can result in an engine stall and a loss of power braking assist, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Dealers will replace the oil pump tensioner assembly and oil pump drive belt, free of charge. If engine failure occurs due to a damaged oil pump belt and/or oil pump belt tensioner, Ford has authorized dealers to replace the engine assembly as an interim repair before the availability of remedy parts for the final repair. This repair will be free of charge (parts and labor). Owner notification letters were mailed August 11, 2025. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 23S64.

  2. 19V023000SeatsJan 2019

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2019 Ford EcoSport vehicles. The front seat frames may have been improperly welded, resulting in the seat back being improperly secured. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 207, "Seating Systems," and 210, "Seat Belt Assembly Anchorages.".

Risk: A loose seat back can increase the risk of injury in a crash.

Fix: Ford has notified owners, and dealers will replace the front seat assemblies, free of charge. The recall began May 8, 2019. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 18C08.
