Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2020 Buick Encore GX, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Transmission16No crashes
Most reports describe a false "Shift to Park" warning. The car is in park, but the dash says it is not, so the engine, radio or lights won't shut off and the car may not lock. Dealers usually blame the shifter assembly and quote about $500 to $700. Owners often pay that themselves, and the failures cluster between 24,000 and 34,643 miles. A smaller group reports stalling in traffic, slipping gears, and Engine Power Reduced limp mode with an underboost code. Some of these cars needed a full transmission replacement, with one quote at $14,000.
Brakes122 crashes
The brake pedal sinks to the floor and the car fails to stop, sometimes with brake, ABS and StabiliTrak warnings lit. Two reports involve crashes, and one of those lists an injury. Several owners say the dealer told them parts for a brake recall repair were not yet available, leaving the car undrivable in the meantime. Brake failures appear as early as 3,000 miles. Other reports describe spongy pedals, brake assist that cuts out, grinding or squealing that continues after brake work, and a fractured rear caliper piston.
Electrical10No crashes
The most serious pattern is a sudden electrical shutdown while driving. Windows, AC, radio and flashers stop working while the engine and brakes keep running. Other reports repeat the false "Shift to Park" message that blocks shutdown. Owners also describe dead batteries on a nearly new car, erratic wipers and liftgate lights, and a second transmission replacement. In one case, a used-car buyer saw the airbag light come on and then found that every airbag and its wiring harness had been removed.
Engine6No crashes
Power drops suddenly at highway speed. The check engine light comes on, Engine Power Reduced appears, and the car slows sharply with traffic behind it. Dealers read an engine underboost code. Some owners report a software update, and one reports two turbo replacements, but the problem comes back. In another report, the car quit entirely in traffic shortly after a rodent-chewed harness near the fuel system was repaired. That repair cost $850 and was not covered by warranty.
Only one complaint here describes this car: a turbocharger failure. The engine shakes, makes abnormal noises from the engine bay and turns on the check engine light, and the dealer finds a failed turbo that needs replacement at about 51,220 miles. The second filing in this category is about a 2014 Jeep Cherokee and does not apply to this model. Turbo trouble also shows up in the engine and power train complaints as power loss and underboost codes.
Steering41 crash
The wheel stiffens or seizes at the same moment the brake pedal goes rigid or drops to the floor, often with several warning lights on. One of the four reports involves a crash, where the car sped up with the driver's foot on the brake and the steering did not respond. Other reports describe Service Adaptive Steering and Reduced Power messages along with low fuel pressure codes, causing sudden slowdowns on the highway. Some owners say they were still waiting on parts for a brake recall repair.
Airbags22 crashes
Both reports say the airbags failed to deploy when the car was rear-ended. In one, the impact pushed the car into the vehicle ahead, and the driver suffered a head fracture after hitting the steering wheel. The other estimates the striking car's speed at 40 mph. Both filings are crash reports, and together they list two injuries. With only two complaints, the only pattern is that the airbags did not deploy.
Acceleration and cruise control2No crashes
The car speeds up on its own, and pressing the brakes does not slow it. In one report, the driver had to shift to neutral and turn off the engine, and the same thing happened again a few miles later on the same trip. The other report involves a car with under 300 miles that kept accelerating and nearly crashed. In both reports, the engine overpowers the brakes.
In owners' own words

Transmission would not connect with the engine. La Fontaine dealership in Saint Clair. Said I need a new transmission cost $14,000. It has 59823 miles under the vehicle.

My 2020 Buick Encore GX is showing a message with accompanying ding ding sounds "Shift to Park" after I put my car in park. This malfunction will not allow the car to be locked. I see there are many complaints and lawsuits that GM has not attended to. How do we get GM to initiate a recall on something they are and were well aware of.

I was traveling to school when my breaks didn’t work I tried them twice and I crashed into another vehicle. And the month or march I took it into to Buick for break issues and they said everything was fine.

Dealership, fixed brakes due to previous recall. Brakes continue to squeal and grind with every stop. Was informed by dealership that they can do no further repair because it is considered a noise and not a safety issue. Grinding brakes are a safety issue!!!

When I put the car in park and go to turn off the car, I'm getting a "Shift to Park" error when the car is already in park. This error will not allow the car to shut off. I have to shift it back out of gear and then back to park several times before it will recognize that it's in park and allow me to turn off the car.
Filed with NHTSA, September 2025
The dash shows an error message "Shift to park" whenever I put the car in park. This message last for about 10 minutes or more locking me in the car. The car does not shut off until the error is gone. I have to continue starting up the car, placing it in park, then cutting it off to see if the message is gone.

Where the 2020 fits in the Encore GX's history
Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.
The 2020 is the first model year of the Encore GX's first generation (2020–2023). First years of a redesign often carry teething problems that Buick fixes in later years, so the checks above matter more than usual.
Buick updated the Encore GX for 2024, so a 2020 does not have those changes.
What changed for 2024 (not on a 2020)
- New Pure Design philosophy
- Change of trim levels to Preferred, ST, and Avenir
Should you avoid the first year of a redesign? See the 45-car study.
Recalls to confirm (2)
Recall repairs are free at any Buick dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

General Motors, LLC. (GM) is recalling certain 2020-2022 Buick Encore GX and 2021-2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer vehicles. The emergency jack, if not positioned as directed in the vehicle owner's manual, can fracture while in use.
Risk: A fractured jack can cause the vehicle to collapse, increasing the risk of injury.
Fix: Dealers will replace the jack, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters informing owner of the safety risk are expected to be mailed July 26, 2021. A second notice will be mailed once remedy parts become available. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300 or Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is A212335470.

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2020 Chevrolet Corvette and Cadillac CT4, CT5 and XT4, 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer, and 2020-2021 Buick Encore GX vehicles. Sensor connection contamination in the electronic brake boost system may cause an interruption of communication between the sensor and the brake boost system.
Risk: If communication with the sensor is interrupted, the electronic brake boost assist could be lost. Extra pedal force will be required to slow and stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the electronic brake boost module, free of charge. The recall began December 9, 2020. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-630-2438, Cadillac customer service at 1-800-333-4223, or Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300. GM's number for this recall is A202307260.
