Which Grand Highlander is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 2.4L 4-cylGas | AWD, FWD | 23–24 mpg |
| 2.4L 4-cylHybrid | AWD | 27 mpg |
| 2.5L 4-cylHybrid | AWD, FWD | 34–36 mpg |
- The 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Grand Highlander that averages well under the EPA 23 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Airbags271 crash
Most of these reports are about recall 24V461000. Under that recall, the curtain airbags on both sides may not deploy as intended in certain crashes if the front windows are down. The main complaint is the wait for a fix. Owners describe months with no remedy, and dealers confirmed the parts were not available. One owner was told the recall had been completed when it had not. Separately, one crash report with an injury says the side airbags did not deploy in a T-bone collision.
Transmission26No crashes
Power cuts out without warning when pulling away from a stop. The car creeps or stalls for several seconds, then surges with high revs. Some owners also report hard shifts or limp mode. Many describe near collisions while entering traffic, often on hot days with the A/C on high, and no warning lights come on. Software updates under service bulletins have not fixed it for several owners, and dealers often cannot reproduce it. Front CV axles also click when turning under power. Bulletin TSB 0082-24 covers this, and owners report the noise coming back after replacement.
Electrical14No crashes
The instrument cluster can go blank, so the driver loses the speed and warning displays. This is covered by recall 25V595000, dealer code 25TA08. Some owners report cars sitting at the dealer for about three months while waiting for the remedy. The center screen also goes black at random and sometimes reboots only after a restart. Radio volume can drop out completely. Other reports cover a fuel gauge that reads empty when the tank takes only about 12 gallons, a phone key that stopped working, and a key fob the car could not detect.
Fuel system12No crashes
The fuel tank will not take a full fill. Owners say they can pump only about 11 to 12 gallons at empty, against a listed capacity of 17.2 gallons, so the real range per tank falls well short of what they expected. Some report fuel splashing back out when they try to add more. Repeat dealer visits have not fixed it. The second pattern is a strong gasoline vapor smell after driving in hot weather, strong enough to fill a garage. Dealers blame the heat. A few owners also report the car will not accelerate from a stop for about five seconds.
Acceleration and cruise control11No crashes
The accelerator goes dead after a stop. Owners describe several seconds with no response and then a sudden surge, which leaves them stranded in intersections or while pulling into traffic. Reports point to hot days, slight inclines, and shifts from reverse to drive. No warning lights or codes appear, and dealers rarely reproduce the problem. A software update did not fix it for at least one owner. Hybrid models show up in many of these reports. One owner reports sudden acceleration while parking, with brakes that did not respond on the first press.
Suspension10No crashes
Two problems dominate. First, the front axles pop, click, or knock during turns. Some owners also feel a wobble or vibration near the driver's pedals. Dealers have replaced CV axles as early as 2,162 miles and again around 20,000. Second, owners report a deep, booming bass noise inside the cabin on bumpy roads below about 40 to 50 mph. It causes ear pressure, headaches, and nausea. Dealers sometimes hear it but call it normal for the design. One owner reports the car pulling to one side even after repeated alignments.
Body and structure9No crashes
The rear edge of the hood near the windshield flutters at speed. The flutter usually starts above 40 to 50 mph and gets worse in wind. The moving metal flickers sunlight into the driver's eyes, and one owner reports being briefly blinded on an interstate. Dealers can reproduce it but call it normal and say there is no fix. Other reports include rear liftgate glass that shattered on its own and a hood support rod hot enough to burn fingers.
Steering6No crashes
Turning left or right causes a loud clicking, popping, or knocking that stops once the wheel is straight. Dealers trace it to the front CV axles under service bulletin T-SB-0082-24 and replace them. For some owners the noise comes back. One report says it got worse by 47k miles, and some owners are on a third set of axles. No warning lights come on. Owners worry that a failed joint could cause loss of control.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Grand Highlander owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
The car is not involved in an accident, but TYOTA and the dealership cannot provide an ETA for when the issue will be fixed. It would be great if the vehicle could be returned or traded for another vehicle if there is no fix available. However, without losing my money as the dealership wants to take it less than 10K even it has been less than 3K miles.

I was just recently in an accident where I was T-boned by another driver. My side air bags did not deploy. There is structural damage and my front passenger tire is laid in this this wasn't a light tap on my car.

Cv axle has been replaced twice so far on my 2024 grand Highlander and it’s only at 18,000 miles currently. From the TSB Toyota put out they redesigned in the middle of production but those who were before this time will always have cv axle problems
Filed with NHTSA, February 2025
Starting off from a stop or at low speeds the vehicle loses all power. Engine stumbles and does not respond, when it happens it almost feels like the engine may stall. Pressing the accelerator and the vehicle will not move, then suddenly will start to go seconds later. This has almost resulted in a crash since the vehicle loses all propulsion unexpectedly. No warning lights. Took to the dealer twice and everything is “normal” no codes stored.

The vehicle airbag is not fixed yet it is almost on year now. Either had to fix or issue new car. even the price come down now lost money due to bad name. when driving suddenly the safety fails and shows error the blind spot. And there is another recall also electrical one they ask us to come fix. How come a car be safe if airbags do not deploy you have to force them fix it please one year is too much it is safety concern.

In the middle where the car chargers are – the one in the center isn’t working but the one to the right is. When doing maps, the visual map disappeared and just showed where to turn – happened about 2-3 time. Today the entire screen went black – no radio, phone, maps, nothing. No way to operate it at all. This is unrelated to the current recall that addresses the speedometer / display right behind the steering wheel.
Filed with NHTSA, January 2026
This vehicle is supposed to have a 17.8 gallon tank but each time at fill up when the vehicle is on empty you can only put about 13.5 to 14 gallon of gas in the tank. Several owners are experiencing the same issues. Toyota Dealerships are aware and no action is being taken to resolve this issue. The mileage to empty is not aligning with the amount per gallon as advertised per TOYOTA manufacturer.
Filed with NHTSA, February 2025
Numerous times now the vehicle will not accelerate from a stop for about five seconds after the gas is pressed. It always seems to be on hot days with high air conditioner demand.
